  1. 138East - We are thinking of renting a wheelchair or rollinator from Scootaway. Since my accident, we have taken two cruises to Alaska that leave and come back to Vancouver (which is easy driving distance for us). In the ports in Alaska I did great with the rollinator.

But I have another question - my travel agent booked the transfer from the ship to the airport (without asking). Does the same travel distance apply to the drop off from the cruise ship as applies to getting to the free hotel shuttle (which we aren't doing!). She can cancel the transfer and I think I would prefer that and take a taxi. Any information?

Thanks again for ALL your help! Mary

  2. Thank you 138East and sddsddean for your quick replies and GREAT information. And your concern about the free shuttle - I can guarantee you that I won't be doing that. We like to travel and unfortunately I feel 3 years ago and broke my hip, hip socket and shattered my entire left pelvis. So I am ever so grateful to the wonderful surgeon that I can walk - it just takes more planning these days! And we factor in to the costs taxi fares, etc - and in order to go and enjoy it is worth it!!

First, I've booked a room at the Embassy Suites and it was actually less expensive than Country Inn to my surprise. And we will definitely just take a taxi from the airport to the hotel and then to the cruise port. I really cannot thank you enough for this information - it made this choice so much easier and eliminated most of my concerns about the free shuttle. I had read the directions earlier and thought oh my.

Now I am SO EXCITED to be going back to my favorite places for lobster. Living near the Canadian border and near Vancouver Canada is wonderful but nothing beats Maine Lobster!

Again, thank you both for the information and helping to make this trip so much easier! Mary

  3. We are booked on the Summit leaving June 27th and are coming into Newark Airport on the 26th. I have a walker/cane and walking is limited. I thought about booking at Country Inn and Suites but would need a restaurant for lunch or dinner. How much is a taxi to the Mall? Or since cost isn't too much of an problem, is there is nice hotel with a restaurant and provides (free or cost doesn't matter) a shuttle to the Cruise Port? Thanks in advance - appreciate the help!! Mary

  4. Thanks vlinbin and njhoo for the information. I haven't checked back until now because of a cold BUT I'm going to call our travel agent today to book the trip. My big concern was getting around cities but I'm really grateful for the information and feel we can do this! I went on the Delta Queen when I was single (and I've been married for 36 years) but that was so, so many years ago. And I loved every second. My husband has never been to New Orleans and really would like to do this trip. I fell in June of 2015 and broke my hip and shattered my left pelvis. I'm up and walking thanks to a great surgeon in Seattle and anxious to get back to traveling. I hope you see this message and know and I really appreciate you both responding! Now off to call the travel Agent.... Mary

  5. Vinlinbin - my husband and I read your review of the Am. Duchess and I have a couple of questions. Like you I cannot stand or walk for long periods/distances (shattered left pelvis) and I tend to get seasick in rough waters. How did you like your cabin location as we were thinking of booking that level and how easy was it to walk around the Duchess.

Thank you in advance and hoping that you see this post! Mary-Margaret

  6. We recently returned from an Inside Passage cruise and as I recently spent a year recovering from a shattered pelvis, I needed a taxi service to get around. We called TruMore Courier DBA as TruMore Chilkoot Trail Transport run by Ann Moore. We arranged for an hour of her time and to be picked up closest to where the ship docked at 10:00 a.m. Ann was there when we got off the ship. She asked where we would like to go and we headed off to our first stop (we have been to Skagway several times previous). My husband loves trains and we next headed off to the train store where he purchased an N-scale White Pass & Yukon train set. Ann asked if we would like to see the "real" locomotive and off we went. What a find! We were so pleased! Our hour was then up and Ann drove us back to the closest spot to the ship. Ann was a wonderful guide, very knowledge, friendly and helpful! The cost for the hour was $25.00 and it was worth more!

I am not sure if Ann will book less than one hour but if that is all you need, I would recommend calling to find out. When you are unable to navigate as easily as you once did, it was so nice to find someone who was understanding and accommodating to our needs and desires. We really recommend Ann and TruMore Courier if you need a taxi ride in Skagway!

  8. We have a rental car in Haines and are looking into times for the high speed ferry. Has anyone done this before and can you recommend timing? We are currently thinking of catching the 8:00 a.m. ferry (we dock at 7:00 a.m. - is that sufficient time to make this ferry connection) and coming back on the 3:00 p.m. ferry? Alternatively, our choices are 10:00 a.m. ferry to Haines and 5:00 or 3:00 p.m. back.

Any thoughts are appreciated! We are both rather slow in walking and we did not want to take a bus tour.

    Thanks!! Mary

  9. Hi a large group of folks are taking a Canada/New England cruise this coming September and a few are having difficulty in deciding which cruise. We lived on the East Coast and have been to Maine many times but the other folks never have been. That being said, a few want to take a Princess Cruise that stops in Portland Maine but not Bar Harbor (our choice!). Our other choice is a Royal Caribbean cruise that stops in Bar Harbor.

The Princess cruise is in port, Portland, 10 hours and the driving time per Google is 3 hours. Has anyone done this and did you have enough time in Bar Harbor? Some information would be helpful to convince folks that Bar Harbor is better than Portland.

Thanks in advance for any help!
