The one time I experienced a itinerary change, it was to eliminate Tunis, Tunisia. This was about 4 yrs ago on the QE.  And they made it clear it was due to political unrest.

I think I was on the same cruise as you and we had a very interesting day in Albania instead. We were travelling with our family from Texas on that trip and they were quite relieved not to be going into Tunis.

Stephen - make sure that you bring the QM2 back to Southampton in good shape on Sunday, as we will be embarking on that day for a B2B - and counting down the hours :)

  2. This really sounds like a plan. We may skip over to Manhattan on the early morning ferry just to take a few photos and the come back over to Red Hook and explore.

Thank you everyone for your advice.

    Jane

  3. Selkie74 - many thanks for this information.

We are on a B2B leaving this week-end and arrive on a Sunday, so this sounds a much better option than going into New York (which we have done many times before).

Can you remember the name of the supermarket?

  4. I am looking for a short cruise in 2019.

There is a 4 night cruise on QE in October for £500 for an inside cabin, or a 2 night cruise on QE for £449 for a Queens Grill cabin.

Do I go for the longer trip or the higher grade. What would you do?

We did a 2 nighter in November 2010 in QG for my hubbys 60th birthday and took along his brother, sister and their spouses. I seem to remember that you were on the same trip.

I personally wouldn't do just 2 nights again as the whole ship had a different feel about it.

Maybe we were just unlucky, but there were lots of stags and hens aboard and a lot of travel agents who had used the trip as a perk for their staff.

I know we could have avoided all of this by sticking to the QG lounge, but we wanted to show case all of the beautiful public areas and bars to our family.

The larger staterooms were fantastic and we did manage a mini party in our suite for the 6 of us, but you don't get the perks of the free bottles of spirits on a 2 nighter. Yes - the food was good, but again with only two nights, the menu is set and you don't get the range of choices that you would get on a longer trip. There was also an issue with the waiter and sommelier who obviously thought that the majority of the clientele were not real Queens Griller's, but only there to try it out as they had got a good deal.

I also think Lancashire to Southampton is a long way to go for what is less than 48 hours on board.

On the positive side, the dress code was smart elegant for both nights, but the standard was very high with lots of tuxes and evening dresses.

So it's really down to personal choice. As you are well travelled on QM2, you would probably enjoy keeping yourself just to the QG dining room and lounge.

  5. Would it be possible for someone who is currently on-board to post a current bar menu?

I would be interested to see what the wine offerings are going to be. The current menu shows very few below the $11 mark, so if this is all that is available then the new deal would not be worth it for us.

  6. Thanks all. This is quite reassuring. Any more feedback on having the kids in a separate cabin that’s not connecting?

Our first TA on QM2 was in 2007, when our children were 15 and 11. We booked rooms next to each other and put them in a room on their own. There were never any problems. The rooms were not connecting, but we did open the balcony dividers (if the weather allowed).

We have done this on all trips we have been on with them.

Our daughter (the eldest) had a ball. She cried when we arrived in Southampton as she didn't want to get off. She is still friends with some of the people she met and has even met them again on other trips. Our son was a little shy (he soon grew out of it!) and didn't settle in the kids club, so he spent time with us and we went to lectures, played cards, played darts in the Golden Lion etc. We allowed them to do as they wished during the day but always insisted that they joined us for dinner and dressed accordingly. We have never seen any unruly children on Cunard (unlike some other cruise lines that we have been on).

We did at least one TA a year for the next three years and they now have 10 Cunard trips under their belts, have been on all three Queens and have loved every one of them. They never say no when we ask if they want to join us on a trip.

    Hope that helps

  7. Flew from Manchester to Rome with them in November to join QV.

You will get a sandwich, a KitKat and a coffee. We were on the front row, but our friends near the back didn't get their KitKat as they had run out.

We thought the flight was basic, but OK. Very much like a no frills airline.

  8. The daily menu choices were generally pretty disappointing, I only ate from it once. Often the highlights in Britannia weren't offered on our daily menu. There were always more vegetarian choices than red meat.

The a la carte selection was good and I never had the same main course twice although I would happily have done so.

On the nights when the a la carte wasn't offered - first, Welcome and Farewell dinner, the menu choices were much improved

We asked for Veal chops one night for the following evening and I had Escargots when they were offered in Britannia not QG. We were never specifically asked if we wanted something different, the Maitre D' didn't speak to us at all after introducing himself on the first day. he made his way round some tables but not ours. The Head Waiter in our section was very attentive though.

We really enjoyed the food and the service but we have had really good food in Britannia as well.

I have to agree with you. We were in PG and found the food to be of good quality, but the choices were often very poor and, like you, I thought the Brittania had more choices. They had Lobster at least twice and we only had it once. On the final night, our appetisers consisted of 3 soups and a salad! Not acceptable. Not once were we asked if there was anything we would like that wasn't on the menu and we certainly have been asked on previous PG trips.

I was also very disappointed with Mark Williams. I was looking forward to hearing him speak, but a very uninspiring Q&A session with Sally was all we got :(

  9. I always buy it directly from my sommelier on the first evening. Although the 15% gratuity doesn't get added on, it is included in the price you pay and is clearly shown on the bill that you sign - at least it was when I bought one in June. So that keeps the sommelier happy too.

  10. I've just told my husband I can find the answer to his question in minutes.......I know you won't let me down. .

If you choose the Captains wine package 12 bottle option do you have to have one of each of the selection listed or can you perm any 12 from those?

We had it in June when we were last on QE and we only had around 4 of the wines. So the answer is you can perm any you choose.

  11. We all had lunch in the Verandah Restaurant today to use our CWC Vouchers, it was ok but I really wasn’t too keen on the limited selections available. Sorry if I'm sounding like a miserable old foodie but there were only four starters, four main courses and four desserts including cheese, which came plated. There was nothing inherently wrong with the place or the quality of the food served and I suppose that it has to grow into its own identity which it hasn’t had time to do. The staff there seem quite ready to say no to passengers which is unusual on board this ship. I have a voucher for next week and I'm not sure that I want to go there again that soon.

We felt the same on the QV in June. We ate one evening, but the food was not good quality (which we did comment on) and the maitre'd was noticeable by her absence....until we left. The lunchtime menu was very uninspiring, even fewer choices than you mention on QM2, so we didn't bother. We've eaten many times on QE and had a much better experience.

Loving the blog by the way :)

  12. They have had a change of heart, or read this forum!

I was informed by the chief purser on one of my recent trips that senior personnel on board certainly do read the forums.

  13. Thank you Hattie, I'll take another look at the website. I didn't see that. I'm sure Cunard will frown upon me bringing cognac on board.

We have just returned from a trip and as long as you are sensible about the amount that you take on board, Cunard will let you take a bottle of spirits for your own consumption in your cabin. You can replenish this at any ports that you visit and it will not be taken off you (unlike other lines).

  14. We've just returned from the 175th anniversary crossing.

The shuttle is only for those people doing the B2B, and runs once (around 8.30am) from the ship to Macy's and then back again @ 4pm. Cost was $49 each return.

There is no facility to pick up boarding passengers in New York, unless you have already arranged a transfer from your airport/hotel direct with Cunard.

  15. Quite surprised you needed to ask. with ALL your Cunard Voyages, food in the Pub is always the same year in year out, On the Three Queens. You appear to be unhappy in the Kings Court, so why not use the Britannnia Restaurant at lunch time.;)

Because Britannia Restaurant is not open on the day of boarding and Lanky Lad also wondered if the Golden Lion was open....and I believe that it is :)

  16. Just checked and you are on the QV. The PG dining room on that ship is the same as on the QE, and as you are also in the Med you get a special outdoor dining space and the outdoor deck space is also really well positioned. Call them back quick!

  17. Hi all,

I had a call while I was as work today, offering me an upgrade from Balcony Cabin to Princes Grill..... for only £500  Needless to say I declined their kind offer! Do you think Iv'e made a mistake, and/or will they come back again with another offer I wonder?

Which ship? We've had an upgrade to PG on QE and the whole experience was amazing. If I got a call like that on a 14 day cruise I would take it.
