Thank you for your very helpful reply. Now I understand that if our previous port was Portugal or France then departing the ship later in France would not be illegal. That, unfortunately, is not the case on this cruise.

Our travel agent says that celebrity will not allow us to leave the ship one day early, but to ask when we get on board if we may. One of our party lives in France and we can disembark and go to her house to visit her family. What would the repercussions be if we left with no permission?

Understood. I believe that was possible since they are both Schengen countries.
