Interesting that so many folks complain about cruising "not what it used to be" and how the lines are cutting back. But if you look at the front of the brochure in the above post, for the 89/90 winter season, rates for a 10 day cruise start at $1539. 30 years later, some lines offer a 10 day cruise for prices starting even lower than that. Of course they are cutting back...to offer the prices they do, they have to. $1539 in 1990 would be $3051 in 2020. I don't think there is any mainstream line offering starting rates of $3000 for a 10 day cruise.
I know what you mean, those were very good prices then, I don't even think Cunard would offer those prices like that for a 10 day trip, unless you got a really expensive room.

I was mistaken. Holland America stretched the Homeric immediately upon delivery. They never sailed the ship in its original Home Lines configuration. Below are the relevant pages from the Westerdam's inaugural season with HAL.
Holland America was as stingy with ship photographs throughout the 1990's as Home Lines was in the 1980's. All of the HAL brochure images are close-cropped vignettes that could have been taken on any HAL ship. Or they are so generic, they could have been stock photos from any ship, any line. The only interior photos I could find are these cabin photos, scanned from the 1992-93 brochure.

Thank you again, I remember this brochure, more than the first one you put up in my request. And yes, they did stretch her out.

Magnificent pictures; many thanks for posting them. My favorite is the one of the Deck Buffet. Somehow, in spite of the CDC, during those years when such buffets were available, we were able to consume food from those buffets and not become ill.
You're very welcome, most of the photos came from a booklet I got onboard when we sailed on her. I remember those buffets. They were very good indeed. You could always expect the best from Costa's chefs.

We sailed on her in 1982, we were travel agents then, she was really wonderful. She was my second cruise after the DOLPHIN IV in May 1981. The FLAVIA was the MEDIA from Cunard Line, built at the same yard TITANIC was. She was really a special ship. It was a big shock to all of us agents when we learned she was sold, she was really popular with the traveling public. I wished we had a few more salings with her. If we only had digital cameras then....

May '81 out of Miami, I didn't take a lot of interior photos of her then. Had my first taste of chocolate mousse...so good. My late husband and I were on her in the late 90's and I managed to get photos of her, both interior and exterior...it seemed she never changed at all and I'm so glad for that. I miss that ship as I do the EMERALD SEAS, NORWAY, AMERIKANIS....here are my photos: http://travel.webshots.com/album/136343762WBvhTy

P.S.
A nice picture of the Flavia dining room staff
I'm glad I have the photo booklet, those are my downloads on Webshots. I didn't take too many interior photos as I did later and I wished I did. My late husband and I sailed on her in the early 80's. I'd loved to see ships that size again. Very homey and comfortable, family. :) :)

Thats more than a collection. Thats got to be a pretty damn big fleet.........
Impressed.
Only one person I know that would have a fleet that big and that's Thad Considine; his collection is HUGE and I do mean HUGE.

If anyone is going on the DISCOVERY SUN out of Port Everglades, could you please check and see if they have a model of their ship in the gift shop? Please let me know. Thank you.

My first cruise was on the SS DOLPHIN, she was with Pacquet Ulyssess Line then, in May 1981 and she went to the Bahamas on all of her trips. This was a 3 day cruise, I didn't get interior photos of her then, but I made up for it when I cruised on her in '96 and '97. A wonderful little ship. That first cruise led to 57 more. Haven't been on another cruise since my husband passed away.

Back in the 80's we sailed the Cunard Countess 4 times through the southern Caribbean. The cruise director was a Brit named John Butt and he was terrfic. On our last cruise on the Countess was also his last,as he was retiring to live in Barbados, a place that he had grown to love over the years. Does anyone remember him and the Countess? I really miss the ships of that size 17,000- 25,000 tons, I enjoyed them much better than the new mega ships.
I sailed on the Countess in the early 80's, my husband and I were travel agents then, just a wonderful ship. I just wished I had gotten more interior photos. :(. I wasn't the camera bug that much as I got to be later. I barely remember John Butt, however I do recall going to the shows onboard. I wish they made more cruise ships that size. The huge ones are too much.

My favorite item is a plate of the SS NORWAY, in beautiful color and rimmed in gold.

I wished we had. 😞 😞 That's why I have been asking for interiors of her. I'm sure she was then. Home Lines and HAL always did an exquisite job when it comes to decor for their ships.
