The latest buzz/rumour for the new ship is that she will (hopefully) be named Mauretania  (the 3rd Cunard ship to be so named)

Much as I'd have loved Cunard to stick with 'Queen' for express liners (QM2 only) and Roman Provinces for slower ships (Mauretania II) I doubt the marketing folks will let that pass - it's 'Queen this' and 'Queen That' from here to eternity I fear....

  2. “If Charles, Prince of Wales, ascends the throne, his second wife, Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, will automatically take on the title and style pertaining to the queen consort unless legislation is passed to the contrary. It has been stated, however, that it is intended that she should be styled not as a queen consort, but as "princess consort"[1] although all references to "princess consort" were removed by both Buckingham Palace and Clarence House on their respective websites by the summer of 2018.”

Was just thinking the very same thing!

If they’re doing “Queens Regnant” they’ve only got Anne left.

However the first two Queens were named after Queens Consort and it was only a bit of ad-libbing on the day by HMQEII that got us a ship purportedly named after a Queen Regnant - though Cunard never admitted as much during her service.

QM2 was named after the first Queen Mary, liner, Queen Victoria after the Queen Regnant and Queen Elizabeth after the preceding two Queen liners. So basically they make it up as they go along.

    Queen Consort names (since 1707):

    Alexandra

    Adelaide

    Charlotte

    Caroline

  4. Now I really want our photo taken with my husband in his dress kilt, my son in his tuxedo

Your son not in a kilt?

I'm sure he'll look dashing either way.......

But they'll both be eclipsed by you! ;-)

  5. That brings up a funny memory. As a kid on Queen Mary, I always had the impression those in First Class were the ones "cooped up". We in Tourist seemed to have most of the ship, or so it seemed to an impressionable youth.:D

The old saying among Cunard crew was that the best class of person travelled Tourist at Third prices...;-)

  6. According to Bill Miller in the 1997 documentary series 'The Liners' (episode three: The Great Duel - found on YouTube), many people felt the Normandie was too luxurious and it made people feel uncomfortable. The Mary was less pretentious and homely.

Sixty years on thats not an unreasonable rationalisation - but I think it was also a function of space - Queen Mary had quite a lot of 'Second Class' (called Tourist) space - advertised as 'better than First on other liners' (and indeed it was):

    http://www.sterling.rmplc.co.uk/visions/dkside2.html

Lets not forget, Americans made up the bulk of First ("Cabin") Class passengers - while Brits the bulk of Tourist - so its hardly surprising a British liner was well equipped for Tourist passengers.

  7. Is tourist class somewhat lower in the ship? They might have been better off. Less roll?

First Class in the middle, on top.

    Second class towards the stern

    Third class forward and aft.

One of the great questions of ocean liner travel was why did the 'dowdy frumpy' Queen Mary so comprehensively thrash the 'glamorous luxurious' Normandie?

I reckon its because Queen Mary looked after her second class passengers better.....

  8. Inevitably we lose contact with posters here, but one the finest and knowlegable ones from way back when I joined (as Mufi) was Guernseyguy. His last posting was way back in January 2013, nothing since.

Was wondering if anyone has any info.

    David.

Still with us - just not been on a cruise in a while!

Thank you for asking - I have not (yet) joined the great departed like Kindlychap or Now Voyager......

  9. ...Cunard were to change to a Flag of Convenience, would I be correct in thinking that any reporting to MAIB would not be required?

    Regards,

    Salacia

I am sure the MAIB will investigate the fire - you'll see from their web site that there is a lag between incident dates and initial reports appearing. Bermuda has its own Marine Accident office - but for serious incidents they will ask the UK MAIB to investigate - as they did with the Star Princess fire.

  10. What was the reason for the fire? It is likely it could happen again? I have read that there was also an explosion some time ago? I hope it is not something to worry about?

It will be investigated and reported here. This also has the report on the earlier explosion which resulted in the QM2 being without power for 29 minutes. As ever, your drive to the airport will be much more dangerous than your flight, which will itself be more dangerous than your cruise....
