  1. Hey Sloop! Good for you girl! My wife has been topless at Orient for many years, but this year was a first. After a few beverages in the hot sun she yielded to all the guy coaxing and jumped on the bar for bar shots. All flavors of liquors licked off to the last drop. Even the bar tender, cook and Johnny at Le String participated. Can't say it was a bucket list item as she will probably be at it again next time.

  2. Of course, I don't know of any jewelry store that does not expect the customer to try to get the best deal possible.

    I have know Heeru (the owner of Touch of Gold) for MANY years. She is excellent to work with and will back up her merchandise to any end. During this time my wife and I have made many valuable purchases and have never had a problem.

    I introduced a friend and she purchased a diamond ring that TOG had obtained for her. The price was about $13,000 and upon returning home her local jewelry store appraised the piece at more than $40,000. The jeweler commented that in all his years he had never seen such a unique stone.

    Stop in to see Heeru and mention my name (Ken) and she will take very good care of you.

  3. Rev - It sounds like you prefer the pastry crust as that's what Kermit's uses. For the Old Town vendors, the receipes are basically the same for all key lime pie fillings. The major difference is the crust (graham cracker vs pastry) and topping (meringue vs whipped cream). Matter of fact, the people at Kermit's told me their receipe is the same as the Giraffe's. Only difference is the crust and topping.

  4. How did you like the pie from La Dochosa?

    As a side note, a group of 7 of us bought a Giraffe pie and every single person didn't care for it. The consensus was bland, too sweet and the $30 price was outrageous.

  5. I hear you Kal. I've found that when I go somewhere for vaction there are tourist places/prices and local places/prices. I love the local spots. Like when I was in Seattle (which I see your near). Found this place called "Hall's Mr.BBQ". A hole in the wall but they smoke thier own meat and the owner was very friendly.Best BBQ I've had in a long time.

    Indeed, that's the case with the Blond Giraffe. It's pretty much a tourist play where they have close-in, readily accessible sidewalk shops on Duval Street. It's an ideal business promo which supports their outrageous (ripoff) pricing.

    Even the Giraffe bottled lime juice is twice the price as it's diluted 50% from the exact same lime juice sold by Kermit's. The recipe is right on the bottle. Nothing special whatsoever. No magic ingredients, just lime juice, eggs, condensed milk, sugar and pie crust. It's a very traditional recipe where the only difference is largely the concentration of the lime juice. Giraffe uses a diluted juice thus the pie is very sweet with only moderate tartness.

  6. The Blond Giraffe pie comes with meringue and is VERY SWEET. Not much tartness typical of the better key lime recipes. But hey, for $3.75 plus tax you can get a small slice to taste your yourself.

  7. Over many years of enjoying key lime pie in Key West, IMHO there is one baker whose product is clearly head and shoulders above all others. Of course there are distinct camps divided between the graham cracker crust vs pastry crust and whipped cream vs meringue. Within the last 2 weeks I did a reconfirmation and had a slice of 4 different key lime pies while in Key West. Those were:

    * Kermit's

    * Blond Giraffe

    * Publix

    * La Dichosa

    Again the winner was La Dichosa! This is a very small Cuban Bakery located maybe 15-20 blocks from Old Towne at White St. and United. They only make about 10 pies a day each selling for $7.00. Compare that to the Blond Giraffe's outrageous price of $30/pie, it's a real no brainer.:eek:

  8. Gary - Once when I bought a gemstone at a US jewelery store I asked the owner what he had in a particular stone. He reached into his pant's pocket and pulled out 3-4 stones then showed them to me in the palm of his hand.

    Now the guy's doing time for fencing stolen estate jewelry! :eek:

  9. ...the $8 buck pie was still better than the 30 buck one from Giraffe if I look at the cost.....and any of them are better than the one from Publix!

    Clay - a key west local

    Clay - I'm just using the Publix pie to compare prices. That pie would indeed set the bottom rung of the price scale.

    Wonder what happened to the pie at La Dichosa?

  10. I've been researching some restaurants and places to shop in Key West for our visit in August. The Blonde Giraffe keeps coming up as the best place to have key lime pie. Last night on the Food network they did a show on the best foods on a stick and right up there with corn dogs was frozen key lime pie on a stick from the Blonde Giraffe.

    Anyone been there??? Is it as great as it sounds???? I love key lime pie and plan to buy several bottles of key lime juice to take home to make my pies.

    dondonma

    The Blonde Giraffe has GREAT pies, but very expensive. Take a step down a bit and you can get a whole pie for about $8.00 at Publix. A whole pie at the Giraffe is close to $30.

    The best Key Lime Juice is "Nellie & Joe's Key West Lime Juice". It's distributed throughout the US so it might be available at home. Go HERE and select your state to see where to find it.

  11. The Majesty parks itself on Pier B right in front of the $400+ a night Pier House!

    Actually the pier is in front of the Hilton Key West Resort and Marina Hotel and the Hyatt Vacation Club Sunset Harbor. The Pier House is north of Mallory Square.
