This is Canada Day.  For the first time in my life I am torn over the thought of celebrating this day.  On May 27, 2021 a dark part of our country's history rose up, grabbed us by the collar and gave us a seismic shake.

"Preliminary findings from a survey of the grounds at the former Kamloops Indian Residential School have uncovered the remains of 215 children buried at the site, the Tk'emlúps te Secwépemc First Nation said Thursday.

The First Nation said the remains were confirmed last weekend near the city of Kamloops, in B.C.'s southern Interior. "

On Thursday came the second heart-breaking announcement.

"The Cowessess First Nation announced a preliminary finding Thursday of 751 unmarked graves at a cemetery near the former Marieval Indian Residential School.

The Marieval Indian Residential School operated from 1899 to 1997 in the area where Cowessess is now located, about 140 kilometres east of Regina. Children from First Nations in southeast Saskatchewan and southwestern Manitoba were sent to the school."

For an explanation of this horror.....

"In Canada, the Indian residential school system was a network of mandatory boarding schools for Indigenous peoples. The network was funded by the Canadian government's Department of Indian Affairs and administered by Christian churches. The school system was created to remove Indigenous children from the influence of their own culture and assimilate them into the dominant Canadian culture. Over the course of the system's more than hundred-year existence, around 150,000 children were placed in residential schools nationally. By the 1930s about 30 percent of Indigenous children were believed to be attending residential schools. The number of school-related deaths remains unknown due to incomplete records. Estimates range from 3,200 to over 30,000."

I am proud to be a Canadian.   I do, however, recognize that our country has made grievous errors and has been reluctant to address and atone for the horrors visited upon the indigenous peoples.  Like the rest of Canadians I don't feel comfortable celebrating this day.

We feel the same as you Mysty.....heartbreaking and horrific!

Hello! I've been poring through this board, hoping to get a real sense about the food. I'm concerned about how many passengers must be served in the same time frame. So, I thought I'd ask this wonderful group of people what you think!

I grew up in San Francisco, recently moved from the City by the Bay to New Orleans and am in my 40s. I adore food and used to be a pastry chef. French cuisine is of particular interest to me. What are the chances that Regent is able to produce food of world-class quality on a ship of hundreds of people? I know I sound horrid, but food is really, really important to me and I want to make the best choice I can for a cruise on the other side of all of this difficulty. Perusing cruise lines is keeping me sane. Though maybe not that sane; I have spreadsheets with every little detail to compare (down to coffee makers in the cabins).

Any insight you could provide would be greatly appreciated!

By all means give Chartreuse a try.  We dined there several times to give it a chance, but it never did excite us and we gave up.  In our opinion only, we found the food to be rich as mentioned - but also blah.  The sauces, albeit mostly heavy, carried no flavor.  If you had given us the artichoke soup, for example, and not told us what it was we would have been at a loss to identify it.  Others may disagree, which is fine, but you did ask for details...

    Totally agree....we felt the same.

We will enjoy our first Regent cruise next month and are very fond of French food.  I am concerned with remarks about Chartreuse (not only yours, but others in other threads), and wonder if there are specific reasons the food might not be enjoyable.  We have booked our first night in Chartreuse and would not like to risk a first impression on the overall cruise.  Please let us know details, if ok with you.  Thanks!

For us the food is too rich , bland and unimaginative.....very subjective obviously.

  7. We got on the Voyager the day you got off...Dubai to Singapore. I wholeheartedly agree with your review ....we loved everything about the ship/crew etc. We too had a Concierge cabin. Our first Regent cruise was on the Explorer so we were a bit nervous. Our only criticism is that we  would have liked some art on board that was not ultra modern ...Explorer has a nice mix. Food was very good except for 2 dinners in Chartreuse....either bland or too rich....wish they would replace it with Pacific Rim.
