  1. We are back from our cruise. Thanks to everyone for their suggestions. We did make it to Freeport, went to LLBean on the day they were celebrating their 100th anniversary. Enjoyed a free hot dog, a local Maine Apple and cider and seeing the Weiner Mobile. Found the wicked whoopie store and enjoyed a cup of coffee and a red velvet whoopie--yum!!! Then we decided to find the winery. Figured we would see some pretty leaves if nothing else. We did get to the winery and enjoyed the tastings. Afterward, hopped in the car and headed back to Portland. Did Cape Elizabeth circle but didn't see the lighthouses. Missed the turn and my DH was getting nervous about getting back to the ship so we just headed back to the rental car agency, called a taxi and got back to the ship in plenty of time.

I would not advise taking a mobility scooter to Trader Joes, there was a lot of traffic. It is just down the street from the rental car agency. It took about 10 minutes in a taxi to get back to the ship and only cost $4.50. Take a taxi if you want to go but we didn't stay in there long because of so many people in there. There was also very little parking available.

Really enjoyed our trip and once again, thanks for the info. Vicki

  2. I live on the coast of Brunswick, which is 15-20 mins north of Freeport andmy mom lives in Casco, and it's a good hour drive if no traffic. One way.. There is no highway to get to Casco you would have to use Rt#302, not knowing how long your in port ...I'd be careful.

If you have time left over there are some nice stores near where your ship is docked.

If you want to do the vodka tour the website is cold river vodka dot com, it's just 5 mins from llbean, and stores. There is a new parking garage in Freeport that is free...

    Hope this helps

Thanks for the website. I copied the address and telephone number so will give them a call and find out when we can do the tour.

  3. Thanks for the suggestions. The blueberry vodka sounds good. Is it close to LLBean? We have rented a car for the trip to Freeport and will try to go to Blacksmiths Winery in South Casco. Don't know how far out of the way that is but looks interesting. The directions say it is opposite the Cry of the Loon Shops. Anybody know about them? Thinking about going to DeMilo's for a lobster roll before we get back on the ship.

  4. OK--I feel better now. Thanks for your help. I made a reservation for a car today. They will pick me up at the port and we will take a taxi back to the port when we drop off the car.

  5. Thanks for the information. I was thinking there was a mall in Freeport. Guess the stores there are just individually located? Definitely want to go to the Goldenrod Garage so will continue to look for private tour companies. Freeport doesn't seem to be that far from Portland. Would it be impossible or cost prohibitive to take a taxi to Freeport? Also, would like to do a winery in the Portland area. Are there any wineries that offer tastings that are close? Vicki

  6. We will be in Portland on Oct. 13 from 7 am to 8 pm. My husband would really like to go to Freeport and and visit the Goldenrod Garage. I would like to go to LLBean and the mall. Does anyone know of a tour company that would personalize our trip to do that? What other types of transportation could we use? There is a mention on the cruise critic ports menu that Hertz has a kiosk at the pier when a ship is due in, but I asked a Hertz representative on their website about it and she said she couldn't find anywhere that Hertz did that. Since it is a Saturday, Enterprise closes at 1:00 so they couldn't bring us back to the port. Can anyone tell me how far it is from 1 Marginal Way to the port? I guess if it isn't too far we could walk back. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks Vicki
