  1. The problem they had with DD. First it was very confusing to many of the guest they did not know when or where they wanted do dine that far in advance. Then if you were 2 or more couples going together and one did not like or could not each Asian food (Silks) none could go there, it was too limited. They fixed that by adding the alternative menu.

After having it for 2 years they encountered numerous complaints. One thing RCL does do is read EVERY comment form and letter submitted. From these comments they received numerous overwhelming numbers of complaints about DD. One major complaint was trying to schedule a dining reservation with a show reservation. This became a nightmare for many especially when doing it so far in advance. Doing it last minute did not always work because of available dining times would conflict with show schedules.

No matter how good or bad something is if the majority of passengers are not happy with it, change it. So they did

I cannot see the problem with “My Time” dining you can still go anytime you want and have the advantage of a different menu every night. DD you had the same menu for half a week per dining venue.

I THINK WE BEAT THIS TOPIC TO DEATH, those that hate DD are happy and those that LOVE it are sad.

  2. No such thing.

    1. YOU never tried it, so as far as I am concerned, you have no legitimate input on the subject.

    2. Not the majority. The LOUDEST complainers.

Sorry Merion Mom but according to Vicky Freed the majority of passengers did not like it. The number of complaints was overwelming.

Royal Caribbean reads every comment form submitted and was overwelmed by the number that did not like it.

I have sailed with DD several times and did not like it but it did not turn me off of sailing with Royal Caribbean..

  3. This question can become complicated depending on many factors.

Booking on board is booking with the cruise lines. The cruise line transfers the booking to the travel agent on record along with the OBC and any other perks they may have given you.

The simple answer is yes you keep the cruise line $150 OBC and can get an addition $100 travel agent OBC. Keep in mind that the travel agent OBC comes out of his or her commission so if the price goes down or any other reduction in cost (commission paid) will affect the OBC given you by the travel agent. Believe me commissions is not that high anymore so with a $100 OBC and a reduction in price could cause the travel agent to lose money.

Here is something to remember, the cruise line OBC is a use or lose. If you get a cruise line $150 OBC and only spend $100.00 you will lose the $50.00. With the travel agent OBC you will get a refund of the unused amount. If you spend $50 of the $100 given you will get a refund of $50.00.

    Hope this answers your question

  4. Ok had to give my opinion. Been on NCL Gem, and MSC Divina, we have been on more than 50 cruises. By the way I want to stress that this is only my opinion and everyone has an opinion.

DINING: MSC has it all over NCL. The quality of food on NCL is below standard. One night we had Prime and what was on my plate but a piece of stringy roast beef. Specialty restaurants was a little better but still below par.

SERVICE horrible. It’s been a couple of years but I am still waiting for desert. Someone said that because of “FreeStyle” you have different waiters and they do not get rated therefore no incentive to give good service.

ENTERTAINMENT. NCL has better entertainment. MSC entertainment is geared toward “seeing and not hearing”. By that I mean that language is not a barrier to enjoying the show.

Is it any wonder J.D. Power rated NCL and Carnival the only 2 cruise lines below standard

  5. Thank you, canajo, for your review! Please disregard the snarky comment by riclop, which to me, was totally uncalled for.

I have never stayed in a hotel or been on a cruise ship that required a card being in a "slot" by the door in order to control the lights. I have learned something new! I do like the idea of a light above the door in the hallway which alerts the cabin attendant that you have left the room! (Hopefully he/she will clean it while you are away?)

Since this April will be my first cruise on MSC I am always looking for helpful hints about their way of doing things. Thanks again!

I have sailed 60 plus cruises and although not a lot I have been on few ship including an NCL ship requiring a card in the slot for electric. It does not have to be you key card it can be anything, I use the do not disturb card.

Even less hotels using it but I am seeing an increase it it use at hotels.

It is an energy saving feature as many leave lights on when leaving cabin.

  6. I have taken 50 Cruises with Celebrity, Princess, NCL, Royal, Carnival and Holland. Saw MCL's match program and first applied on-line in Mid December. After applying 3 more times and calling 3 more as well, I finally had someone call me about 10 days ago. I resent to her my paperwork showing Elite on Celebrity and she did reply in a timely manner with our Black status and numbers by email. The next day I got an email with 2 completely different numbers. The Web site will not allow me on. I sent her an email asking for her help, with no reply to date. What is going on with these people?

I have been on 60+ cruises and found it very simple to get my black card. Faxed in a copy of Diamond Plus and got the card.

Although I have heard of others having the same problem as you. Apparently there are short handed in this dept. This is a bad excuse but it is what it is.

BTW you won't get a new card in the mail when you check at the terminal you boarding card will be black.

  7. Booked Seaside on the 23rd via voyagers club. Going on Jan,27 2018 in the Yacht Club, inside room with all the YC stuff. What a deal for a great price.....$1215 pp plus tax and they gave us the drink package for outside YC. Can't wait to go.

    This is confusing.

As far as I know the YC does not have inside cabins. A drink package is not offered as ALL drink are included in the YC including the mini-bar.

Sounds like you booked the Fantastica or Auroa class.

  8. Can you say more about the specialty dinner? I've read it was a "tasting" menu? Did you get to select your restaurants or nights? Was it a fixed menu or just like walking in and ordering anything you wanted?

Yes we selected the night and specialty dinner. I am not sure what a "tasting menu" is.

We had a special menu but is consisted a salad to start with, a pasta dish and a choice of 3 or 4 items.

The point is that is was free. We looked at the menu before making a reservation as one in our party does not eat meat or fish. They accommodated her with a pasta dish no charge

  9. As a former NCL enthusiast I am very curious how others would rate MSC on Value of the Dollar or Euro whatever the case may be. It seems MSC is a step above in style and cost. What are your thoughts on this?

I have sailed NCL and just completed #4 on the Divina.

I found the quality of service amenaties and food on MSC far supieror to NCL. Dollar to dollar (or Euro) MSC is great value.

  10. Got of the Divina 2 weeks ago and took the match for Black Card.

    1) Priority check-in at pier.

    2) Chocolate covered strawberries twice during the week with a bottle of champaign each time.

    3) A gift of travel bathroom toiletries in a travel bag.

    4) A back bag that you can carry items like swim suites etc

    5) Bathrobe and slippers. Slippers you can take with you.

    6) Free specialty resturant for 2.

    7) Free photo

    8) Can't remember how much but a discount in store.

    9) Chocolate ship

    10) Black Card only cocktail party

We received something every day in our cabin.

BTW this all is per person not per cabin

  11. I am on the Jan 11 sailing and asked the same question a while ago.

I found out that there is a forum for this question. After raeding all the opinion and then checking with trip advisor I decided on Premier Cruise Parking. Beware there are 2 of them and the other did not get good review.

The one below is 1 mile from terminal and got a lot of good reviews.

I am NOT recommending anything just saying what my reserach found.

BTW a discount code saves a few $$

We will be driving to Maimi for a cruise and looking for a SAFE parking lot that is not overpriced.

  14. the one variable we can not control is the other passengers. We found that as Canadians our politeness was not often seen in many (not all) of the other people on board. Many people were willing to cut lines and be rude and not think twice about it. /quote]

Since I do not want to start an argument I won't say who. I have found that the people from certain areas in the world are rude, noisy and will cut in front of you. Just suffice to say that it was not Canadian or American.

I have been on the Divina 3 times and on Princess about 6 times. In my opinion Princess has gone down in service and quality. I think that MSC Divina is far superior to Princess. The crew is very friendly always walk around with a "hello" and smile. I do not have young ones but was able to see the kids and programs. They all had a blast, every night at show time they marched into the theatre singing.

Other than going during xmas you should have a great time as will you kids

Don't let the negatives talk you out of it. Some of the negatives have never been on the ship.

BTW If your kids like pizza they have soem of the best I have had. Also in back of the buffet they have a counter and for kids with kids food.

  15. I am sure I will get a lot of flak from this, but I prefer a local travel agent any time over an internet agent. I like to know who I am working with, want to see them face to face.

In our local paper they have a travel section ever Sunday and help to resolve travel problems. On average about 95% of the problems are with online bookings, not only cruises but land tours. Booking directly with the cruise lines (which I have done) is safer but I get more perks with my local TA

  16. I'm looking forward to this ship. It's rare for a truly original design like MSC Seaside to come along in an industry that is full of copycat ships. Yes, from time to time you see a new gimmick like a water coaster or "skydiving" at sea. But the real innovations are few.

I'd put RCI's Voyager-class and Oasis-class in the category of innovative ship designs, but I don't think CCL or any of its brands have done anything close to innovative in decades. Let's hope MSC and Virgin shake things up for an industry that's getting stale.

One thing I don't like about the new MSC ship is the name. Seaside? Really? It's very out of sync with the naming philosophy of the rest of the fleet. What will the other new ships be named? MSC Bayside, MSC Streetside, MSC Sunnyside, MSC Flipside?

I agree with you Fairsky, I thought the name was out of sync.

BTW were you on the "Fairsky" i.e Sitmar Cruises in 1984/

It was my first cruise in 1985.

MSC Cruises to station new ship, Seaside, in Miami

MSC Cruises to station new ship, Seaside, in Miami

    By Hannah Sampsonhsampson@MiamiHerald.com

    03/17/2015 5:45 PM 03/17/2015 7:22 PM

In a fresh push to become a serious player in the competitive North American market, European cruise operator MSC Cruises will base a brand new ship year-round in Miami.

The Geneva-based company made the announcement Tuesday afternoon during the Cruise Shipping Miami conference in Miami Beach.

MSC Seaside, under construction in Italy’s Fincantieri shipyard, is scheduled to debut in November of 2017. The 4,140-passenger vessel will be christened in December of that year at PortMiami — the first MSC ship to be christened in the United States — and sail the Caribbean year-round.

Officials from the cruise line and port signed a letter of intent Tuesday agreeing to a multi-year commitment. The number of years has not yet been determined, a port representative said. When the ship arrives in Miami, it will use a newly renovated terminal.

    Related

Cruise industry leaders eye emerging markets for growth “This is a dream come true for PortMiami,” said PortMiami Director and CEO Juan Kuryla at the event Tuesday.

Gianni Onorato, CEO of privately held MSC Cruises, said in an interview before the public announcement that the company is focused on becoming more global. With a strong presence already in Europe, South America and South Africa, the company needed to boost its efforts in North America, he said.

“We cannot be so small in the main and most important market of the world if we want really to be a global contemporary cruise line,” Onorato said. “We do think that this will allow us to enlarge our presence in North America in a way that we can keep up with the highly competitive level of the market.”

MSC announced the approximately $743 million order for the 154,000-ton vessel in May of 2014 but had not announced where the vessel or its sister ship, launching in May of 2018, would be based. The company also has an option for a third ship in the class.

Seaside will be the first of a new class of ship designed for warm climates and will feature a four-slide water park, children’s aqua play area and ropes course. With a heavy focus on the outdoors, the vessel will include a sea-level promenade with shops and restaurants that stretches around the sides of the ship as well elevators with sea views.

In the midst of a $5 billion-plus expansion, MSC will also introduce a separate class of ship in June of 2017 in Europe. By the end of 2017, the company will have 14 ships deployed around the world with two on the way and options for three more.

Tuesday’s event was not the first time the company has announced big plans for a North American presence. In March of 2013, MSC said it would sail the year-old Divina from Miami year-round starting that November.

The cruise line known for its Mediterranean sensibilities made adjustments to appeal to North Americans: making announcements in English, serving free water at lunch and dinner, banning smoking in most areas and offering food and entertainment that would appeal to passengers mostly from the U.S. and Canada.

But by April of 2014, as fierce competition in the Caribbean forced operators to slash prices, the company changed course and said the 3,502-passenger Divina would again summer in the Mediterranean as of 2015.

Ken Muskat, executive vice president of sales, public relations and guest services for MSC Cruises USA, said Divina will remain in Miami until April 26 of this year and return in November. It will stay in Miami seasonally even after Seaside launches, which means the company will have two ships in Miami in late 2017 and early 2018.

Muskat said the company has been trying to raise brand awareness with consumers and travel agents, and saw positive results from an advertising blitz in late 2013 and early 2014.

Fresh ad campaigns and online efforts — including a new consumer website — will lead up to the launch of Seaside.

Onorato said the experience with Divina has provided a good way for the company to dig into the market, improve relationships with travel agents and fine-tune its North American operations.

Said Onorato: “I think this will be very valuable for the future for us and to prepare for the arrival of Seaside.”

  18. Smoked salmon isn't particular to the US - it's huge here in Ireland. Scotland is also famous for its smoked salmon. In my experience (having done 7 MSC cruises) smoked salmon is always on the breakfast menu in the MDR and on the room-service menu but never on the buffet.

True I know there are several verisons of smoked salmon but the one I am referring ti is called "lox"

I also know they had it in the MDR but we usually had breakfast in the buffet and should have been offered as most other cruise lines do.

BTW, I read that the lack of smoked salmon in the Buffet was the number 2 complaint, number 1 was eggs to order

  19. Interesting about the eggs, I had eggs made to order and omelets made to order every morning. Now they did move the egg station after the first day, but this was back in OCT. Not sure why it would have changed.

Not sure if you are talking about the Divina but being on it 3 times starting with the first US sailing in Dec 2013 they never had eggs to order at the buffet.

  20. Valid points about the food availability that I had yet to mention. Much of what you said about the eggs, lox and kippers I did not encounter, as I wasn't looking for them, although the MDR did forget my toast order at breakfast... Minor detail for me.

I agree that check-in was a bit of a mess. It didn't bother me so much, but I was standing with a few people that said that the delay was unacceptable to them and refuse to sail MSC again for the delay.. IMO I would not let that minor detail taint my whole perception. We arrived at about noon, and were on board before 2. Not horrible to me, but some information from MSC would have been very welcome! We were boarding a boat that just finished a 3 day full-ship charter for an Electronic Music party.. Much of the delay had to do with the company dismantling and removing the stage off of the pool deck also. It would be unsafe to board while that process was still ongoing... I did not hear about the late risers, but that doesn't really surprise me either.. Same company had a charter in January and the Logo shop sales lady told me a story about a pax who was too impatient to get off the ship on the return and jumped into the water at the POM before docking.. Yes a few chairs were broken in the theater, but I partly expected to see some things much worse upon boarding and felt the crew did an amazing job getting things cleaned up for us in such a short time!!

According to the Cruise Director, guest relations, and the crew it was not the stage removal but the drinking of the group. Cabin stewrads were not permitted to clean cabins until missing passenger were found, as result many cabins not cleaned to standard in time. My daughter and son-in-law had to call guest relations at about 7pmto get cabin cleaned.

I was the first one checked in at 10:30am and waited until around 2, (almost 3 hours). An announcement should have been made I kept hearing many complain like you heard saying they would not sail MSC again. This was my 3rd sailing and I would go again things like this can and does happen.

Since this ship is home port is Miami smoked salmon is a must yet they did not have it. They had baked beans at breakfast buffet, which is european but no salmon which is american.

Non of this was a turn off for me we loved the ship and crew.

  21. Was also on the Divina last week, my 3rd cruise on this ship. Entertainment is excellent rated the best by porthole magazine among others.

The quality of food was very good, unlike another unnamed cruise line.

I did find the selection to be limited.

I found a few shortfalls. Eggs to order at the breakfast buffet not available. Fried eggs and pre-made omelet's were available but did not fit the bill. Sunnyside up eggs, poached eggs, different kinds of omelets could not be had. Even though they went fast, many times they were not hot by time you got them. Another major complaint by some was no smoked salmon (lox) at buffet. Been on numerous ships and never saw this before

We had a little service problem in dining room at breakfast, some did not understand when I ordered Kippers (on menu) other then that service at dinner was excellent

We were one of the first to check in at the pier. Then waited almost 3 hours to board. Apparently they had a group on board that were drunk and still slept. After waking them up they still had 3 missing. Immigrations/customs etc would not allow b boarding until found. So here we had hundreds of people milling around the terminal with no idea what was going on. It would have been smart if they announced over the PA system something to calm us.

The group was so bad that they broke some chairs in showroom. Crew said they were terrible drunk most of the time and disruptive, Because of delay some cabins were not cleaned on time
