I just got off the phone with Princess after scheduling my flights with EZ Air. We’re flying into Heathrow the day before our cruise from Southampton. The Princess advisor assured me that Princess would have a shuttle available from Heathrow to the port- even though the ship won’t be there yet! (We’re planning to stay in Southampton overnight.) Has anyone had this experience? I stressed that this would be the day before the cruise, but she said it’s not a problem.

Last fall I flew into Heathrow from Alaska the day before my cruise landing at 8am. I only had a very stuffed carry on so was able to head straight to National express to catch a bus to Southampton.  I'm an experienced but rather nervous traveler so I  make good use of YouTube videos for instructions on how to .....

Because I watched several videos on how to get to the National express station at Heathrow from British airways, I had no trouble finding it, buying a ticket from the kiosk and boarding. I was traveling without my hubby so more nervous than normal but it all went perfectly.

At the bus depot you can walk as I did to a few close by hotels or use uber. I took uber to the ship the next day for like $10 and he dropped me right at the terminal door.  I was in my cabin in 20 min.

    The bus is about $20-25.

  2. We live in Anchorage, it is not a long drive to get to the train station, maybe 20 mins max. Since you will have flown all night I would say get a hotel near the airport and sleep! There is nothing really to do at that time in the morning and you will want to be refreshed for the train trip as it is spectacular. Remember the motion of the train will make you sleepy so if you start out that way it will be very hard to stay awake.

The train station can be chaotic on a ship day so go an hour early. The drive from airport area to downtown will give you a good idea of Anchorage.

Airport hotels will be safe so don't feel like you have to get the most expensive if that is an issue. There are some nice places to eat breakfast around the airport also which is a good idea since the station and train don't have a lot to offer. Gwennies is great if you like a true Alaskan feel and a big breakfast, plus it is within walking distance from several small hotel/motels.

  3. HI,

I live in Alaska and have done the Cruise 3 times. Sorry can't remember which ones, but will say that we enjoyed them all.

Glacier Bay is impressive and all the ports are close to the towns if you like to walk about and explore.

I agree that if you can afford it a land tour will expose you to Alaska's beauty the most. You will have a better chance of wildlife sightings if that is important to you. If you'd rather not spend that much, stay a couple days in Anchorage after the Cruise and visit Kincaid Park as I almost always see Moose when walking the trails and on occasion bears, but they don't hang around when they hear people.

End of June or all of July will give you the best weather but it will always be cold on the ship, bring a warm coat for the deck! Also the the southeast is a rainforest, so a rain coat is not a bad idea, though amazingly we rarely had rain on our cruises. Global Warming?

Do a kayak excursion, go horseback, or hiking, and if possible the White Pass railroad trip is breath taking in Skagway.

Alaska needs to be experienced not just viewed if you are physically up to it. Lovely state with interesting people.

  4. it should say in your itinerary in your documents. You can also check the port schedule for your ship to see what time they have it scheduled. That's probably the most accurate.

What ship are you on and what date will you be in Georgetown?

Thank you that was just what I needed. The port schedule is the same time as listed on the itinerary.

We are on the Ruby Jan 12th scheduled for 7am to 4pm.

  5. I'm booking a private tour in Grand Cayman and the operator asked me what time the ship will be on so they are there to meet us at the correct time. I've searched Princess's site and can't locate the ship time. I know they let us know on the ship prior to arriving in port but how can I find out now for a cruise in January?

    Any ideas?
