  1. I have always been thrilled to see a street/building, etc. in a city we are visiting that I recognize from books that I have read. "The Diary of Anne Frank" was a book we had to read in school and I was very move by it. It was at the top of my wish list when we went to Amsterdam. I let the others go ahead as I couldn't hurry through. I remember thinking where is the tree Anne looked through the window at as I missed it. I went back a bit and found that you could not go up there but there were mirrors that were set up so you could see the tree through the window. I was so moved thinking that Anne was there at one time and that was where she wrote in her diary. I can't explain how moved I was to be standing in her home!

I read the book also and went to see where she had lived when I was there. It was nice to see the rooms, etc that she had written about.

  2. Just make sure you take your own toilet tissue with you. I had read this before I went and I took the middle of the roll out and flattened the roll and it was easier to pack.

I didn't take the whole rolls but partial ones flattened and they were easy to carry in your purse.

There are not many places along the way that have toilet tissue in the bathrooms...

    Have a great trip.

  3. Dress code questions-

We are on the City of Lights Cruise in early may on the Longship Odin.

1.) I have been told and read that dress is casual on the boat. Men wear nice slacks and Tommy Bahama style shirts and women wear smart casual. Is that correct?

2.) Captains Dinner - is it the same or do men need sport coats? Women need nice dresses? We are bit confused on this.

    Thanks you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have been on four Viking river cruises and it is very casual. You don't need to dress up for dinner like on the big ships.

Some men take sport coats but not many. The ladies can wear a dress for the Captains Dinner if they want to but I just wear nice slacks and a top as do many others.

You don't need dressy clothes at all. Smart casual is fine.

I love Viking, you will have a great trip.

  4. I grew up in Manitoba and the weather was very cold like 40 below or so.

On Vancouver Island I don't think the weather ever goes below 40 Fahrenheit.

We don't need heavy coats and lined boots for winter... Mostly just a waterproof coat and a sweater.

  5. I did this same cruise with Viking in November (17th to 24th) last year.

    (My 4th Viking cruise).

I took long sleeved and short sleeved sweaters but the weather was good and I was never cold. You could take a couple of each and then see what the weather is like. Dress in layers and if you get warm you can take a sweater off and put it in your bag until you get back to the bus.

    Have a great cruise.

  6. I have been on four Viking river cruises and never had one problem. I was on the Rhine Getaway in November.

You can order as much food as you like.

Wine and beer are included with lunch and dinner and you can buy drinks at other times. They have champagne out at breakfast for those that want it.

There is a free excursion each day but if you want to choose something different you will pay for it.

You each get a bottle of water in your room every day and I am sure they will give you more if you ask. Usually when you are leaving on a tour they have bottles of water out there.

  7. I have gone on many trips by myself if I couldn't find someone to travel with.

I have been on four Viking river cruises with friends but if they would have cancelled I would have gone alone.

Go and have a wonderful cruise. People are very friendly on river cruises.

  8. I have been on two Tulips and Windmills river cruises with Viking, once in 2006 and once in 2014 (March to April 2nd).

We had a great time on both.

I have also been on the Rhine river and in China with Viking. I am happy with them.

  9. I have been on four Viking River cruises but have never sat on the top deck so I am not sure if people go up there at night or not.

I have never had a problem with Viking so I will continue to sail with them.

    They look after everything.

Some people always have something to complain about and when I see their complaints I always hope they don't have any children. They probably expect their children to be perfect also and we all know that never happens....

I always say whatever happens was meant to be.

  10. After reading this thread I got my video out from my Viking China cruise and just watched it.

They have photos in there with the passengers doing different things.

There are some of me in there. One is when I was with the little girls at the school and they had stickers all over my face and berets in my hair, etc.

Do they still make the video of your China cruise?
