  1. Well, they were wrong. We were booked on this last year as part of a Collector's Cruise - until HAL chartered out the first two weeks. That isn't going to happen on a Grand Voyage. The Grand Asia voyage is something entirely different. Grand Voyages begin and end in North America. That is NOT the case in these Volendam cruises that the OP asked about.

Grand voyages do not have to start and finish in North America. The Grand Med Voyage on the Prinsendam starts in Fort Lauderdale and ends in Europe.

  2. It sells well because it usually the last leg of a Grand Voyage that starts in Singapore about the middle of March and ends in Vancouver.

The Grand voyage is usually in the 45 day range from Singapore.

What Grand Voyage is this? The World Grand Voyage starts in Fort Lauderdale in the beginning of January and returns to Fort Lauderdale. The Grand South America on the Prinsendam starts at the beginning of January in Fort Lauderdale and returns to there. The Grand Asia and Pacific use to start in Seattle in September but that has been discontinued. So I don't know which Grand Voyage you talking about?

  3. I have read all the replies that people have brought forward.

What would happen if the wife is caregiver onboard and she has medical issue during the cruise and can't care for the husband?

I was on a trans Atlantic cruise when the husband was the caregiver and he had a serious heart issue. He was in the ship's ICU for 3 nights before reaching France. At the first port the husband was medically disembarked to the local hospital. The wife with demetia was disembarked also. She could not manage herself so the port agent arranged for her to a seniors home that could manage her. But the big problem was that this couple could not speak French and at the seniors home nobody spoke English.

  4. Perhaps on the ship/line you have cruised, but other lines call them Doctor (who handles both guests and crew), Nurses, and Medical Admin.

We are talking about Holland America here. There is no Medical Admin, the Lead Medical Officer looks after the Medical Center.

  5. Semantics. Medical Officer is what a doctor is called onboard a ship.

Onboard the ship there Guest Doctor who looks after the guests, a Crew Medical Officer who looks after the crew and does Nurse duties, Lead Medical Officer who is a Nurse and in charge of the Medical Department and Medical Officer who is a Nurse.

  6. My wife has to have minor surgery (on her upper arm)done tomorrow and will require her stiches to be removed in two weeks. The problem is that we will be on 42 day cruise at that time. Will the ship's doctor remove them for her?

The Doctor likely will not due it but a Medical Officer will.

  7. Back in June/July I saw several reports that the elaborate cheese options had been replaced with a rotating selection of 4 pre-set cheeses each night. Can anybody who has sailed recently confirm this is the case?

We're looking at a final decision between Volendam and Noordam and I'm assuming that the cheese offerings will be the same irrespective of ship class, but please let me know if this is not the case!

Come on - You mean the choice between 2 ships is the cheese plates. I don't believe it!

  8. Hi All,

We are looking at taking a family cruise with our parents next summer and I want to make sure I get my in laws a room with a bathtub-- however, when I looked at deck plans for the Volendam on HAL's site it says: "NOTE: C-category staterooms become shower-only after December 22, 2014." Is there a major renovation planned? Is it for C-category staterooms only or all categories below C (i.e. all Oceanview cabins?)? I think we would be happier overall on Volendam than Noordam (they have the same itinerary) but don't want to pay to put them in a nicer cabin with bathroom if it won't be nice by next year!

Also, if anybody has pics of OV baths on the Volendam class ships they would like to share or direct me to, I would greatly appreciate it!

    Thanks!

The Volendam is going for dry dock in December, so changes could be coming.

  9. The relevant blog of Captain Albert has been removed, also deleted from the archives. This is very strange since it in no way reflects badly on HAL.

Courtesy of Lizzie68 the following is the deleted blog:

Isn't strange that Captain Albert has nothing on his blog the last couple, unles head office has told him to be quiet. This wouldn't be the first time that has happened.

  10. Would Capt. Albert would have got a promotion or demotion going from Captain to Trainer? After the incident on the Prinsendam and going for more training and then going to the Statendam which is the oldest vessel in fleet after the Prinsendam. I would think this would be a demotion.
