  1. Try Calabaza catamaran. It is very mellow, they never book more than 12 people, you gently sail the turquoise water, magnificent food, wonderful drinks and while they do stop to allow snorkeling and swimming with turtles you don't have to participate and can continue to relax in the sun. They pick up at port and return on time. We have sailed with them every time we go to Barbados.

  2. We got Russian visas so we could go on and off ship on our own. We used an agency, Rick Steves recommends,

    http://www.passportvisasexpress.com/

But depending on where you live you could locate a travel agency which specializes in getting visas that is near you.

Yes the visas have a cost, and it is extremely difficult to navigate the Russian system for visa applications on your own without a visa agency. But having the visas was wonderful. We did use Peters Walking Tours while there. They met us at the Hermitage where we received a half day private museum tour. The next day we met a guide by the Church on the Spilled Blood and did a wonderful half day walking tour. Our visas and tour costs were far less than the ship's tours. We got taxis from the port, to meet our guides as well as to go to some other sites we were interested in.

We will be returning on another Baltic cruise this next September and intend to once again get visas. We personally really dislike most group tours so this works for us.

  3. As a retired high school teacher, including AP courses, I found it was my students who were hesitant to miss school, not me, as their teacher, having concerns. I told my students they and their parents needed to weigh the pros and cons of their vacation plan.

As mentioned in this thread there are numerous educational, intellectual and cultural lessons to be learned while traveling. But we were still continuing to hold class even while they were absent, and there is instruction which will occur that just doesn't translate well from a written page compared to being in the classroom. And this should be true in all classrooms, from elementary through secondary school. If a student has no loss of instructional growth when absent ,then, in my opinion, that teacher isn't very effective.

Sometimes students will have homework to do while on their vacation, sometimes not, and so will teachers ; I can't count how many Christmas cruises I dedicated a couple hours everyday to reading research papers while sitting on my balcony, but that was ok, it's part of the sacrifices everyone makes when planning a holiday. ( seriously I was in the Caribbean, not the snow, how could that be negative )

Talk with your kids, their teachers and as a parent be cognizant of your child's academic comfort and success. Whatever decision is made be satisfied with it, neither you nor your kids need to be anxious or unhappy when it comes to a vacation.

  4. I would not be comfortable with that early a flight time. If Delta made a schedule change, just contact them and inform them that the new departure time will not work for you. They should reschedule you to another more suitably timed flight without a charge. If you can do a little research on your own and see what alternative flight times are offered, then when contacting Delta just indicate the flight you find better suited to your needs. Do this ASAP to improve your chances of getting seats on another flight. Be polite but firm with them.

  5. We were on Alaska cruise last week. In Victoria if you walk to fishermans wharf go to the pier and you will see a little yellow water taxi boat. It will take you across to the city for $6 a person one way. If you only want to ride it back after walking lots around the city that's also possible, you aren't required to purchase round trip tix. The embarkation is by where the seaplanes land, down and across from Empress. That's another excursion you might enjoy. Contact Harbour Air 800-665-0212. $119 or $179 for a beautiful air tour of the area. HarbourAir.com

  6. Thanks to your post c-legs, we booked welovemalaga for the Ultimate tour. We have Damian as our guide for12 of us as a private group. Unfortunately the Cathedral is not open to visitors on Sundays, but fortunately, being Catholic, we will get to see it at 9am mass before we head to McD's to meet at 10:30.

Damian was our guide. He was terrific. You'll have a fun, informative and tasty experience.

  7. Meeting point was at McDonald's a short walk from where shuttle bus drops you. You will need to take the shuttle. They should be able to customize, they were very amenable and we had 6 people, plus joined by 2 others so 8 total, a nice size.

  8. Highly recommend Bobs Limo. We have used them three separate times while in Rome for a port stop. They are reasonably priced, will accommodate your excursion however you desire, pickup and return to port promptly and with clean vehicles. They will give you direction regarding purchasing coliseum tickets ahead of time to avoid the lines. Also if you find others on your sailing through your roll call see if you can get them to join your party and share the costs.

  9. I find the best tool is google flights. They provide a calendar for as far out as seats can be purchased and you can scroll to see prices. Then if you click on one it lists all the airlines and their prices and schedules for that particular day. Google flights does not list southwest or all economy airlines but they do list some of them. http://www.googleflights.com then select " classic flights" . Put in a date and destination then click on the departure date you entered and a calendar should pop up that you can scroll.

Good luck. Buying airfare is an exhausting business.

  10. Norway is extremely beautiful. Fjords are breathtaking. Hope you have a balcony cabin, or try to be on deck as the ship sails to your ports. Take the opportunity to sail up a fjord on a smaller boat if you can. Take the train in Flam for other spectacular views, if your ship stops there.

Dress in layers. It is cooler as you go up in altitude, but if it's a sunny day you will soon be too warm. Bring mittens or gloves and a hat, if you end up not needing them you will not have lost much packing space .

Norway is very expensive. Any purchase of food on land will be very costly in comparison to other stops. A beer and 2 cokes along the water cost $30 U.S.

  11. Palm courts garden. Google them. Lovely, quiet garden with pool, bar, restaurant, easy walk from the port. Not exactly all inclusive. $12 to reserve chairs then you purchase food or drinks as you like. Excellent place.

Also for any other ports check out "resorts for a day". They offer many options for a variety of ports.

  12. Have you checked trip insurance coverage on the credit card you may have used to pay for the cruise. Many cards offer automatic coverage for what you are referring to simply for purchasing cruise with the card.

  13. I have found that casual dresses, sun dresses, etc. are far more effective in cutting down on clothes. Instead of two items( a top and pants or shorts ) I have only 1. Also a skirt can be transitioned from daytime to night by the top you wear, pashmina, belt and shoes, etc. my biggest dilemma has actually been DH clothes, as they are bulkier, heavier and take more room than mine.[emoji33]

One pair of casual flip flops, 1 pair dress sandals, 1 pair dress shoes and 1 pair heels does it for my shoes. DH requires we pack his pair of python cowboy boots. Can you see my issue with his stuff?!?

Also any item that can be easily laundered in the sink and dries overnight is a good choice, should you not want to engage ship laundry.

And definitely allow room for new purchases [emoji3]

  14. We have done this through resort for a day three separate times. It's a wonderful resort, a great option for Falmouth. Lots of food options, plentiful drinks, excellent beach and nice pool.

I don't recall pickup times specifically but it seems they meet you on the pier about 45 minutes after docking and return will get you back to pier generally 90 minutes before ship requires you to be back onboard. You will have more than sufficient time at the resort.

  15. There is a car park right next to the cruise port at the World Trade Center

    https://www.barcelona-tourist-guide.com/en/faq/cruise-ship-terminals/cruise-ship-car-parking-facilities-at-the-world-trade-centre.html

It is convenient, safe and secure and not particularly expensive. We parked there for a cruise and were very satisfied. We drove up to ship, dropped our luggage, went to parking garage, locked vehicle and walked 100 yards to bus stop, rode back to ship and off we went.

  16. Being from Utah as well we've flown into IAH many times for cruises as well as to visit family since DH is from Houston ,we highly recommend checking flight costs to IAH daily and you'll find something reasonable. Also Hobby is the closer airport, but understand galveston is another hour outside of houston proper, across a bridge, with construction on I 45.

Another consideration, there is no rental car return or drop off in Galveston on a Sunday so you would have to pay for the rent car, gas from Dallas, a week in a parking garage, gas for return trip, to say nothing about the stress of the drive. Unless you had a night flight out of Dallas you couldn't get off ship and to DFW flight in one day.

Go to google flights.com and put in SLC to IAH and look for the best flights look at entire month's calendar. If price isn't good search again the next day, clear your cookies on computer so you don't get a cached record of searches. Good luck.
