I just sailed on a few weeks ago with just a birth certificate and driver's license. So, it isn't an issue or a problem if there aren't any emergencies, as others have outlined. However, when I returned home, I sent in the renewal papers for my expired passport. I'll be more comfortable that way for future travels.
