Just got back from a cruise on the Equinox last week, and we were in Punta Cana on Nov 28. The weather was great - 85 and sunny. The tender boat ride to the island was smooth. There is really not much to do at the actual port. Celebrity offers excursions, but they seemed overpriced, so we just took a shuttle ride from the cruise port over to Api Beach, which is on the left side of the marina from where the tender boats go in and out. It was $15 round trip per person; about a 10 minute drive; you cannot walk there even though it looks close. The beach was very small but clean and beautiful and was not crowded at all and had some shady places to relax. There is no cost to go to the beach resort, but we bought two cocktails, which were very expensive ($26 for two frozen drinks). There were almost no shops on that side, just lots of new-ish empty/boarded up buildings; it’s kinda like a weird tropical ghost town. Our tender boat ride back to the ship was a little choppy and by the end of the day it was getting hard for the tenders to dock at the ship.

SHIP: Equinox
CABIN #: 8230
DECK #: 8
CLASS: Veranda 1A
AREA: Midship - convenient to everything
BED NEAR: Bathroom, facing forward
QUIET?: Yes, very quiet
BALCONY VIEW: forward facing on the hump
BALCONY SIZE: extra large - probably two-to-three times longer than most but on a forward facing angle
WIND A PROBLEM?: It did get quite windy
SOOT A PROBLEM?: No
PROBLEMS/COMMENTS: This was a great cabin. We had three adults and managed without many problems but had to stay organized. The extra large balcony provided extra get-away space.

Thanks everyone for all your information!
15 months and counting!!!!

Some great questions. We would urge the OP to find someway to increase their time away from home to at least 10 days (14 is even better). The airfare to Europe is expensive, jetlag can make the first couple of days a bit difficult, etc.
As to ship motion, the most stable cabins are located on the lower decks amidships.
Regarding time of the year, we really like mid to late May. Mid to late September can also be fine. If you want to swim in the sea then Sept is much better then May when the sea temps are still chilly.

I would LOVE to extend our trip (and am not ruling it out) but want to start planning on the most likely scenario. You make a good point about airfare and jet lag. I think we have agreed to add an extra day before and after in the beginning and end port cities. So we're up to 9!
To lessen ship motion, I think we will look midship as you suggest.
Time of the year seems to be pointing toward June for us for now, but we might work out a late May or even September. I think we have ruled out July and August.

Thanks for the info on Pompeii. I love history more than shopping as well, though my sisters might not feel quite the same - so we'll have to balance it out I guess. :)

Your picture of Sorrento is so cool! I love how they squeeze the roads in however they can. I look forward to reading your review.

Wow great info so far! I knew this was the place to start! :)
I'll take some time to review the links with my sisters and may post back with more questions. Thanks everyone!

My two sisters and I are planning a milestone birthday Med cruise for 2016. I'm looking for any tips that could be helpful to us. Here are some things you should know:
We are looking for a 7 day cruise. (Home obligations prevent us from going any longer). Ports of call are up for discussion, but we assume we might start in Rome and would like to see the Amalfi Coast.
We want to share one cabin, preferably with a balcony. And one of my sisters is worried she might get sea sick easily. So is there a certain cabin type (code) we should be looking for? Which cruise line will give us the best room layout?
When is the "best" time to go? We would rather not be on a ship full of summer vacationing families, and we don't want to go when the Europeans close up shop for their vacations either.
The Med cruise itineraries seem to be pretty full, so how important is "the ship" on a cruise like this? Will we be spending enough time on the ship to worry about which one has the better amenities?
So that's my starting point. Anyone have any tips to share?
Thanks!!

I did not see any show (or signs of a show), but we probably went over about 2 hours after the ship anchored. Definitely not within the first hour. Maybe there was one first thing in the morning but I didn’t hear anyone mention one.
