I just took an Uber from Port Everglades in mid-January. Not a problem at all. Be sure to wait until you have all your luggage and head to the pickup spot.

By the way, if you are new to Uber, use a promo code before your first ride. You and the holder of the promo code get $5 off their next ride. If you need one, mine is 6y3g9.

Anyone know the approximate Uber price from FLL airport to Lauderdale e by the Sea?  Thanks for sharing your code.

Just booked a room here for our precruise stay next February. Anyone have any info on this hotel?

    Thanks, Lloyd

I'm staying there March 1 & 2.  If you get back in time to respond would you let me know your mode of transportation -- taxi or uber (or other)?  and the approx. cost.  Thanks much.  Molly

  3. Used to buy bottles of inexpensive bottles of Controy liquor in the Ports. It is identical in taste to the very, very expensive Contreau. I heard the company was purchased a year or so ago by a company in Texas and wonder if it is still available in Mexico.

Has anyone purchased it recently? We travel with carry-ons so would have to bring a bag we can check on the airline if we can still buy this. Fabulous in a margarita !!!

  4. I have done both Cosol’s and Herod’s tours. Both tours are very good, but I prefer Herod’s over Cosol’s.

The specific tour I’m referring to is Herod’s Land & Sea Safari. The things I preferred with Herod are:

    1) Lunch was served at his mother’s house on the veranda. It was a very good meal and a wonderful setting. Cosol’s lunch was standing at a large table in a parking lot and picking at appetizers for lunch.

    2) Both tours took us to Jalousie beach between the Pitons, but Herod had much nicer boats for the trip there.

    3) The return trip to the ship; Herod took us by fast boats and Cosol returned us by van. The tour is a long way and I was not crazy about the long trip back in the van. Besides, the return trip is during heavy traffic and takes quite a while.

Most other things about the tours were pretty similar.

I must add that St. Lucia is a very beautiful island and both of these tours take you to see the highlights of the island. If you have never been to St. Lucia before I highly recommend you take one of these tours (or a similar one)

Yes. Yes. and Yes. I completely agree with everything this person said. You won't be sorry if you book with Herod!

  5. It took me a few tries to get a response to Herod but he personally called me after a few. Seems for some reason I wasn't get his responses to my Yahoo email but never had an issue with my Comcast email.

I would definately send him another response and maybe use another email server if you can. I used Herod in January 2014 and would definately recommend him.

I agree -- try again. Email communications in the Caribbean are sometimes very slow, particularly if there has been a storm, etc.

Herod's Land & Sea tour is my favorite tour on St. Lucia and I've been on lots of St. Lucia tours. All are good - no complaints, it's just that Herod himself is such a lovely man and having lunch at his Mother's home is very special.

    Molly

  6. I am having a hard time choosing! Which would you pick and why?

Just another opinion to confuse you even more ... I've been to St. Lucia many times and have done tours with most of the operators, including the ones mentioned here. All were very good but personally my favorite is Herod's Tours. Particularly the Land & Sea. This next Feb. I will be on his tour for the 4th time. That's how much I like it. All day tour with Herod, lunch at his family home. Lunch is cooked by his Mother and most of the produce comes from their garden. The home has a great view of the pitons. After lunch it's off to the beach at the base of the Pitons (think it's called Jalousie). This is one of my favorite snorkel spots in all the island. I really can't say enough good things about Herod and his tour.

(feel free to ask me if you have any questions. If you happen to be on the Celebrity Eclipse, Feb 15th then maybe I'll see you on this tour)

  7. Good morning,

We'll be on a short 4 day cruise in January on the Sapphire anchoring at Catalina and docking in Ensenada. We've cruised Princess in Europe and Alaska and have always done some great shore excursions. My "gut" is telling me that there isn't much to do/see there. My "gut" is also wondering if we do go ashore should we worry about eating the seafood?

Would love to hear back from those of you who've been there. Thanks in advance.

    Mike

This reply to late to help the others on this particular posting BUT if anyone else checks ... at least get off the ship and walk to the small shopping area that is inside the port and buy a bottle of a liquore called CONTROY. It's about $10 for a one liter bottle (probably even cheaper in town). It taste just like the very pricey Contreau. Rumor has it that Controy is made by the same company but it's made for the Mexican (or Latin?) market and is not available in the States. If you love margaritas, just wait until you taste them with a little of Controy added to your Tequila and whatever else you put in your margarita. I try to go to Mexico at least once every 2 years just to stock up on this liquid gold.

  8. Name of shuttle service from MIA TO PORT EVERGLADES

    please.

    Dale dachshundpoodle@gmail.com

I'd really like that info too!

Celebrity changed their port from FLL to MIA. I always arrive in port 2 days prior to cruising and love spending that time in FLL. Not sure I would like 2 days in MIA so I'm planning to take a taxi/ train/ shuttle from FLL to MIA on cruise day

    Thanks so much, Molly

  9. Molly, You sound just a bit confused...

Carnival does NOT dock at the "World Cruise Center"...The World Cruise Center is in San Pedro...Carnival docks on the other side of the harbor in Long Beach...

Berth 46 IS in San Pedro...at the end of Miner Street in the Marina--across the Marina from the Doubletree Hotel...

I doubt that the access will be necessarily closed...but, it is a short walking distance to the 22nd Street Landing Restaurant...

If you leave the ship and turn right, the first cross street you will hit is 22nd Street...Turn left and the restaurant will be almost immediately on your left within a couple hundred feet of the intersection......

Thanks to both you (Bruin Steve) and Wineaux for your suggestions. Very helpful. I will give your suggestions to our friends and let them decide where they want to pick us up. (Celebrity shows us docking in "Los Angeles" but in actuality it is Pier 46 in San Pedro.)

    Thanks again, Molly

  10. I'd like to start this thread and try and keep it as the definitive "go to" for ?'s about San Pedro. I currently live in San Pedro moving from West LA in 1999 where I lived for 19 years, originally from Macedonia, Ohio. I have lived in the Los Angeles are since 1980. My wife, Alison, was raised here in San Pedro so she has seen it all!!

I find San Pedro to be very misunderstood by TA's throughout the world and those that live in SoCal but are outside the area. San Pedro is definitley a working port town but has plenty to offer cruise passengers as well as those looking to kill an afternoon before heading to the airport.

If you have any questions in regard to our beautiful town please feel free to ask and I will try and answer them to the best of my ability.

    Welcome to San Peeeeeeeeedro!!!!

We arrive in San Pedro on a Wednesday. I'm familiar with the World Cruise Center (Carnival) but this time we are supposed to dock about 2 miles south of it at Pier #46. Friends who live in Long Beach are picking us up for lunch and I have no idea where to tell them to meet us. I'm assuming foot & vehicle traffic into the port itself will be restricted. Any place we could walk to that would be a good meeting spot?

    thanks!

    Molly

  11. Molly ~ WOW....what a trooper you are. That's a ton of reading.

Yes, there are quite a few places on St. John that accommodates two. VRBO has a bunch listed and is where I found Skyflower Suite where we stayed. It was perfect for two!!! Favorite time of year is a tough one. Jan & Feb has great weather when it's cold back in the US but that's also high season. I prefer when it's less crowded. We've done April, May and June now. I think I'd vote for April. Fewer people, not too hot, not too many bugs yet, all the restaurants and stores are open. I'd probably love it in late Fall, too (November) but our business doesn't let us get away in the Fall.

Cruises have taken us there primarily from January through March. In all of our stops there on cruise ships (probably ten), we have only had one day where we had any kind of considerable rain.

For me, I'd go any time of year, I love it that much. The sights, the peacefulness....it's just the perfect way to slow down and appreciate mother nature's beauty.

Enjoy you upcoming stops, Molly. Wishing you days filled with sunshine!

Days filled with sunshine! I really like that ... thank you! Thanks also for the VRBO Skyflower Suite suggestion. I will check it out, along with other VRBO rentals. I've used VRBO in the past for Oceanside, California and for Orlando, Florida.

April would probably be a good time for us to be gone. A few warm days here in Reno, NV but they are just teasers before the temp drops again. Plus it's early enough that not too much will need to be done in the yard yet. Hoping to possibly set something up for next April. We'll see ..... If we are there we will think of you constantly and follow your many suggestions on where to go, where to buy groceries, where to eat, where to snorkel, etc., etc,

Thanks again for all the help you offer to me and to so many others.

    Molly

  12. I've just finished reading all 35 pages of posts. Yep, all 35!

Thanks to Augie & Anne (and everyone else) I no longer want to just spend a day on St. John. I want to be there for a week. No, that's wrong ... I'd really like to be there for a month! I'm going to start planning a trip right now.

Augie & Anne --- what are your favorite times of year to be on St. John? Is it possible to find places to rent for only 2 people? Hmmm, the places you rent look fabulous ... can we come stay with you. Hey, we'd be happy to pay our share. We'll even cook and clean !!!

We were fortunate enough to be on HAL's small Prinsendam ship over the Christmas & NY holidays. It's a small ship so we anchored in the harbor and tendered to shore. Fabulous day.

I had pre-arranged with a local company (Arawak) for a 2-person kayak rental. What a day. It was very windy so the owner suggested we paddle into the wind and then have the wind at our back on our return. Good idea! We managed to paddle to Chocolate Hole but it was quite a challenge with very strong winds and BIG, BIG waves. At one point, no matter how hard we dug in and pulled our paddles it seemed as if we did not move for about 10 minutes. On our return we had the wind at our backs and a following sea -- what fun! Would not recommend this on a windy day unless you are experienced kayakers (We are 66 & 69, are experienced kayakers and are both very fit).

This day just whetted my desire for more time on St. John. We will be back on St. Thomas (Celebrity) December 5th, 2012 and again in February 2013 (Princess). This time with our son & wife. Plan to take the ferry to St. John both times. Can't wait to show St. John to the "kids".

Thanks again for sharing your wealth of information and incredible photos.

  13. Anybody do this tour? If so what is the boat like, don't want to go on a piece of junk. If this tour is a joke, anything better?

The boat is beautiful. There is quite a history to it that the owner/operator will you about.

We had a really great time. Usually we book independent tours but couldn't do it this time because of our short time on Bonaire. (Emerald Princess was in Bonaire from 7 am until only 2 pm!)

This is one of the few ship sponsored excursions that we truly enjoyed. After everyone is shuttled from the ship to the beach, those who wish to drift are taken by zodiac to the farther end of the island. Once out of the zodiac you drift along with the current back to the beach. This takes about 20 minutes or so. Great way to do some fantastic snorkeling with almost no effort at all.

This was one of our favorite excursions !

  14. :(

Got back from our Oceania cruise today so I'll post a quick note about our experience on Cayo L.

At Samana we were tendered to either Samana or to Cay L. Since we went to Cayo L. we weren't able to find out about transportation to the Cayo from town.

Our ship offered tender transportation only for $30 pp or transportation plus buffet lunch for $50 pp. We chose just the transportation and were glad we had as we didn't hear any good comments abou the food. We did purchase a burger. Burger (very small and very dry) or hot dog plus fries was $5. Being a bit concerned about the water (ice in the drinks) we opted for the local beer (Presidente) which at $4 seemed a bit high but it was very cold and very good.

Our ship's tender went over about 10:30 am and we had two pick-ups -- 3 pm or 4:15 pm.

The island does have a beautiful setting, wonderful white sand, lounge chairs. Local venders were not pesky, etc. Snorkeling, however, we thought was very, very disappointing. Too sandy -- great for swimming, lousy for snorkeling.

If you just want to lay on a beautiful white sandy beach then this is the place for us. Personally we were disappointed and wished we had stayed aboard the ship. This was our only disapointment on the entire cruise.

Hope this is a help for someone.

    Molly

  15. Hi Connie,

I'm going to book the excursion to Cayo L. today. Don't really see anything else interesting. According to other posts the stop at Samana isn't worth getting off the ship unless you are on an excursion.

I'll post again late March and let you know what we found.

    Molly

  16. Hi GG & Chris,

My mistake GG, I thought you had already been to Samana. I'm going to check out the website that Chris found. Most likely we will end up booking through Oceania tho I really hate to do that. Sounds awfully expensive for what you get.

We're not leaving home until March 11 and be back the end of March . I will definitely let everyone know what we find.

    Molly

  17. Hi GG

What were your thoughts on Samana? Did you go to Cayo Levantado? We will be on Oceana's Regatta docking at Samana in Mid-March and are wondering whether to book the trip to Cayo L. Seems awfully over-priced for what it offers and I wonder if we wouldn't be able to get a "water-taxi" or something like that to get there on our own.

Any thoughts would be much appreciated!

    Molly
