We were in the last car, quite some time later. Princess only authorized a two day stay, even though they changed our flight to September 24 due to the ten day quarantine requirement. The front desk couldn’t or wouldn’t give us the Princess rate, but a seven day stay showed up on the screen at almost $5,000. We chose the two day stay, and on Monday moved to Courtyard by Marriott on points. There was never anyone from Princess there, as promised, to give support or information. We are going to try to get Princess rate compensation for that stay from Princess insurance, but are not optimistic.
I was charged for a three night stay, but left on Monday for home with my 5 day isolation finished.
I have not applied for reimbursement yet but I can imagine the underwriter asking why I only stayed 2 nights but charged for 3 nights. I got a convoluted explanation from the front desk. This was our 8th cruise with Princess over 12 years and I was not amused how it ended.

Did you go to the Hampton Inn?
Yes. I was at the Hampton Inn Manhattan. I was in the first car that showed up. I think that all thought a bus would move us, so people were reluctant to step forward. The lady with the car replied to all questions with sound answers, so I figured that it was not a scam. We got to the hotel around 1 pm.

Well I guess that I was one of the 67 or more who tested positive for Covid. Tested on Tuesday after I had a rough time sleeping Monday night. The wife and I were given option for me to isolate in our original cabin or be moved. The wife said "move him". I ended up on deck 9 balcony, orange sticker on the door said 'trained personnel only admittance'. I am sure that there were many unreported cases.
Being escorted off of the ship, I passed many cabins with red labels indicating no admittance warning.
No followup from Medical during my stay onboard ship. I did receive one phone call from guest services early on asking me how I was doing. No real explanation on the 5 day isolation policy was given. My suggestion would be to ask Guest Services if there is a Catholic priest on board your cruise.
On our last cruise, I found out only after a fellow cruiser told me that there was a priest on our
cruise and saying daily Mass. Don't count on the daily newsletter to indicate it.

So you care more about what others are wearing. Here is a prime example of someone changing their attire (and attitude) because of others. Because they feel the glory days of formal evenings are gone. Makes no sense. Formal evenings & formal attire still exist. Other passengers have not paid for your cruise. It is your vacation, not theirs. What others choose to wear should never dictate what you choose to wear.

Yes formal nights still exist and no, other passengers don't dictate to me what to wear. Our first cruise was in 1986 on a Royal Caribbean ship. Back then, waiters wore white gloves at dinner service. Wow, I didn't think that I would have to
defend my position concerning formal wear thirty-plus years later. Times do change.

My guess is 50 percent will have tux, suite or jacket , always did a tux in past will brink a sport jacket in future.
Same here... I took along my tux for two cruises with one being a cruise out of Dover UK, the other a New Year's eve cruise out of Houston. I will take a sports jacket in the future since I think the glory days of dress up formal nights are gone now.

Having cruised 5 times with Holland America, two of those cruises on the Zuiderdam, I would go with RCI.
Your children will be bored stiff by the end of the HAL cruise. Our last cruise on the Zuiderdam was in June 2018.
With a port intensive 14 days, only 3 sea days, it was very quiet after 10 pm. You made the correct decision and
saved yourself money and headaches. Tom

Have done about 20 rccl cruises no military discounts , MSC gives a very nice discount
We have done 5 cruises on Princess and my military / veteran on board credit has been applied to most of them.
OBC amount depends on the length of the cruise. Tom :)

I've never seen a sign saying not to tip the porters and many people do. I do agree that they don't really deserve much (if anything) for the minimal amount of work that they do. When we sailed on Oasis several years ago, I had to wait several minutes for one of them to just put my bags on the cart. I should have just done it myself.

I saw a sign posted when we boarded a HAL ship in Dover, UK. I literally had to force a tip into the porter's hand at which time he accepted it. I find that at International ports, tips are not expected but will be accepted with a smile.
My favorite tipping story is when we boarded a 4 night RCI cruise in Miami. I handed the porter a large bill. He looked at it and said "You don't need to tip me that much!'. I just said to keep it. :)

We will be testing your MM theory in a couple months. We are on what I think will be a popular cruise. I am not expecting an upgrade from MM. Tom :)
We went from MM to outside obstructed mid ship. No problem with that guarantee selection. Tom:)

Regarding the dreaded MMs....here's what has been my experience:
However, in my eight years on HAL I have NEVER been actually assigned to an MM...or even an M. Here's the reason: I've noticed that those undesirable lodgings are often occupied by contract entertainers or other contract personnel, whose accommodations are "comped" by HAL. I've most often ended up in a J or K. Twice I've even scored the very large "sideways" staterooms that RuthC is so rightly fond of....and still I was only paying for the MM gty.
So good luck to you. IMO you'll likely not end up in those little, poorly-located digs. I'm eagerly awaiting news of my own MM gty on Zaandam in <1 month.

After a 3 year hiatus from Holland America, we return to our very first Holland America ship.

If you can dress in something more formal than your swim suit or your pajamas you will be fine. We saw everything on our last cruise including a young man in shorts and a tee shirt in the dining room. No one said anything.
We now split our cruising dollars between Holland America and Princess. The last New Year's Eve cruise that we were on, table next to us wore casual. I was wearing a tuxedo. I think from now on, a nice sports coat approach will be the most extreme I will go for 'gala nights' on either cruise line. :)

That's sad. On most ships the entire Lido deck is filled with dancing passengers.
I agree with you there. It looked like a Disney Production. I felt sorry for the dancers trying to get the guests to participate.
Funny though: I was on the Royal Princess sailing out of Brooklyn NY for a repositioning cruise. I was impressed at the joy just watching the guests participate with the cruise staff. :)

K'dam hasn't called in a delay and port schedule hasn't changed, she should be leaving at any time.
She is still at the pier. So much for port schedules! :-)

So far, so good, we have never had an issuer with lost luggage. However, more than once we have found one of our bags in another group of bags other than the group were it was suppose to be. My only guess is that someone grabbed it and then realized their mistake and just left it in the different area rather than take it back to where was. :confused:
Hopefully your Mom's luggage has ID in it and will eventually find its way back to her.
We have been on a couple cruises where luggage could not be found in designated color area, then mysteriously appear 10 minutes later. No explanation given. I wish luggage was checked at the exits like in the 'old days' at airports' baggage claim.

Hmmm... I didn't know that. All I saw on the Majestic Princess recently were pre-made sandwiches kept in a cold cabinet.
It wasn't like Holland America's typical buffet area where a dedicated sandwich maker is prominent.

We did the brewery tour from the Alaskan brewery store in August 2014. $20 round trip including tasting and tour. Brought a six pack and a couple bombers of the Smoked Porter back to the ship. We put them in our backpacks. No problem.
I did a 'bike and brew' excursion back in 2009 with HAL Veendam. We biked to Mendenhall Glacier, then driven to the Alaskan Brewery by van. I recommend this brewery. Tom

Here's the in room beverage price list from the 45 day Atlantic Adventurer cruise on the Rotterdam (Oct 25th to Dec 9th).
Dalwhinnie Scotch $99 a bottle plus gratuity? I think that I would be drinking bourbon.

The Curtis Stone items were one of the biggest mistakes Princess even made and as soon as they get rid of the happier most cruisers will be. Talking to one of the cooks at the buffet recently, he had no words for those items. :rolleyes:
I hope they do replace it with some of the removed items from the past.
I have to agree with your post. Our October 2016 Ruby cruise main dining room choices didn't impress me.

Probably in the minority but I usually don't attend any more - been to a few and that is enough. The only time I do go is if I particularly want to meet someone from the roll call and haven't been able to arrange to do so. I'm not a grouch, just feel I don't want to spend my cruise time in this way any more.:)
I have to agree with you. Considering that all Princess will do is reserve space for the event, and have the bar open, it is more like meeting interesting folk who have posted in the group. Holland America will setup coffee, tea, and cookies for their meet and greets while Royal Caribbean used to offer door prizes to the attendees. Tom

This time last year, my wife and I took back to back Princess cruises. First leg was a Norway cruise, followed by a repositioning cruise back to the States. We self-tested for the second leg and were
both negative for Covid. Repositioning cruise started out fine, but on the last port visit, many were
coughing and sneezing on the tour bus. Well, I came down with covid, wife was negative, and I was quarantined in a separate cabin. Yes, keep those masks handy, avoid those crowded elevators (possibly were I got infected).
