I don't know why anyone would pay for that experience. It's not the same as actual snow. I don't even want to cruise to Alaska.

That's a shame. I go to Alaska every year, just last year it was 75-80 degrees. Very comfortable for active activities.

That's too bad. We sailed with her several times and she was wonderful.

 

I don't see Ashley on the list either. She was on the Summit last time we sailed with her.

I agree with you. Be content with what you have 20 years ago they didn't offer anything. :rolleyes: I myself would never drink enough to get my moneys worth out of a 123 drink package. Most of us are content with the Elite cocktail time. If you want 123 go for it.

I agree with you that Bloody Marys should be on the 'menu.' However, for you to mix your own would cost you 2 vouchers. One Voucher for the Vodka and 1 voucher for the tomato juice. If you order a soda, water, juice or booze, it is 1 voucher. However, you can have a mixed drink with soda or water and it is only 1 voucher. DAHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!

Yes, 4 vouchers valid from 5-10pm regardless. If they are giving you 3 or 4 vouchers, why limit you to a certain time period. It should be valid for that entire evening or for the entire cruise. They are just trying to reduce their costs and limit the use of the vouchers.

On the Celebrity menu it states Absolute Vodka, I have Bloody Marys all the time. the mary part is just a mixer like coke, club soda, or orange juice:)

We are also on the TA portion with you. B2B procedures are as you describe although if you don't want to stay on the ship I believe you can disembark at any time but have to wait until they start boarding again but you can just embark with an in-transit pass. If you stay on the ship they walk you off and back on.

 

There was another thread about some real good deals in the last few days on the 11/23 sailing. Hope you got a good upgrade. We did on the TA but was more than $14:)

If you stay on the ship, they give you your next seapass (usually the night before), you will meet up as a group and walk off the ship check out using your old seapass card. You will go down off the ship, say hi to customs with your intransit card in hand and return back to the ship using your new seapass card to check in.

If you get off the ship, you can't get back on until boarding time and you must have a new seapass card to check in. If they have not given it to you before you left, you will need to stand in line and get it. The intransit card itself will not get you on the ship. You must have your seapass card.

We're doing the Southern Caribbean in November, on the Valor. We're going to St Thomas, Barbados , st kitts, st Lucia, and St Maarten, my question if we like this intenerary would you do it two years in a row but like the islands you went to and do you have any tips going from Carnival to Celebrity?

I have done it three years in a row and maybe again this year. There are things to do in each port and the cruise is so port intensive that if you are tired one day , you may simply decide to do a beach day or stay on the ship. Each line has its own personality, just as each ship does. Depending on the port you start from can make a difference in your shipmates. The time of year definitely does. I usually pick a ship because of the time frame and where it is going. I just always hope it is a Celebrity. Thanks for the review, Heather. I too especially like the Summit, but then again I just got off of 23 days of the Century and liked it too. :)

Thanks for the recommendation. I think the Waterbar might be a little too far away for us. I guess I should have clarified my love for shellfish; it does not include oysters or mussels. I love crab, scallops and shrimp.

 

I will keep it in mind, though, in case we do use public transit.

When you come out of the terminal turn to your right. Pier 39 has a bunch of restaurants in it or just a bit further down (3 flat long blocks) is Fishermans Wharf. there are bunches of restaurants there. Many have their menus posted outside. There is about an eight or more block area in there that is all flat and great for walking. There is also seating here and there where you can rest and just watch the antics of the locals wandering around. It is a beautiful, lively city that I grew up in.:)

Howdy. This will be our first Alaskan cruise, departing at the end of August. Historically, it looks like the weather has been in the high 50s, low 60s that time of the year.

 

1. Is it best to bring an all around jacket (similar to this) and layer short/long sleeve underneath? I would like to reduce the amount of clothes I need to pack.

 

LAYER, LAYER, LAYER. I have been to Alaska in November and just wore a shirt, a sweater, and a fleece jacket. When you're walking around the towns you will be heating yourself up. I go to Alaska every year and have never needed much more than this. If you need more, all the towns have great stores you can usually pick up an extra jacket in some nice ones for $20. the chilliest I have been was at the glaciers and you just stay out for awhile and go in warm up and then go back out again. Some ships do have nice warm fuzzy blankets to use on deck. Rain is a hit and miss. I have a poncho, but only used it once. I have gotten wet a couple times, but I did not melt or get sick.

 

2. How much do cruise lines typically charge to wash clothes on board? (I am going on Princess)

 

Most Princess boats have a self serve laundry located on every other floor except the busy floors (casino, dining, stores). Bring lots of change and and a book. Be patient you may have to wait for someone else to get done. And yes people do get bossy and rude and claim dibs on a machine. Loved it once when somebody did that to me and I said that's okay I would use this other one. Well, the one they claimed dibs on broke and I just grinned and went right on ahead with my claim. It's nice to do it later in the evening if you can.

 

 

3. Regarding rain, would a poncho be sufficient or is something heavier ideal?

 

Rain is a hit and miss. I have a poncho, but only used it once. I have gotten wet a couple times, but I did not melt or get sick. You just take it in stride and relish the cozy heat when you get back. I do carry it with me each time, but a little mist won't hurt.

 

Any other packing tips would be welcome and appreciated. Thanks!

Buy a hand held scale for $5-8 dollars to carry with you. Those souviners weigh a bit. There's nothing like watching people at the airport shuffling their clothes all over the place because a suitcase weight was now 5 lbs. more and was going to cost them and extra fifty dollars for the $10.00 in souviners they bought. I speak from experience and won't be caught with out one.

Thank you for the review. We board her on the 24th. This will be our seventh time on the Century and probably our last since she is being sold next spring. She was our first X cruise. Still my favorite X ship. We sailed on her to Hawaii in Dec. she was in fabulous shape then and by far the best crew Celebrity has. We will miss her greatly. Glad you enjoyed your cruise.

As will my husband and i. Can't wait. :D

Here is a link to a great picture of the derailed train at the White Pass Summit. It is pretty lucky that one of those passenger cars did not roll into the lake. Thank God there were no causalties and that no one was seriously hurt!

I enjoyed every one of your re-posts. I see you are a new poster to Cruise Critic (5 posts) and can appreciate that this was a little blurp that didn't hurt anybody. I had several myself when I first got on. Post away it is your right and happy cruising.

I plan to take my Mom on an Alaska cruise next summer. I've worked through our priorities (and budget) and believe we will most enjoy a 7 night roundtrip inside passage cruise out of Vancouver. I am looking forward to watching the beautiful scenery and maybe wildlife as we sail. For those familiar with the HAL Volendam and Celebrity Infinity, which has the better indoor and outdoor observation areas? What were your favorite spots to watch the world float by?

ANY ship going to Alaska works for me. All ships have their own personality. Volendam is a smaller ship than the Infinity. So you don't have to walk so far between things. Glacier views are good on any of the ships. I get right ourside there and watch. Or you can go to the front lounge at the top of most ships for inside viewing. I go outside because sometimes pictures through a window don't come out real good. What ports is the ship stopping at? What excursions do you want to do, that one ship would offer that the other wouldn't? Does the Volendam still have a movie theater? Infinity took theirs out. What is life/personality like on the ship? As I said before, I could make any ship work, as long as I was going to Alaska. :):):)

Any day on any ship is better than a day in the office. I like every cruise I have ever been on. Every cruiseline and ship has it's own personality. What one may like another may not. My husband and I last minute wanted to go to Alaska. I only had a set time frame to do this in. Our normal cruiseline the dates wouldn't work so we tried another. The ship was fantastic. We had never considered it before but now we do. But mainly, I think where do I want to go?

I guess one needs to take "suck up" lessons to get invited to the Captain's Table? :eek::rolleyes::D
