  1. In that I travel single and opt for Bella Interior I take umbrage at discription "dumbed down" as noted in the following definition :

    The term "dumbing down" originated in 1933 as movie-business slang, used by motion picture screenplay writers, meaning: "[to] revise so as to appeal to those of little education or intelligence".

  2. Oh my, my! Sarafina's is now a definite stop for me! Is there a taxi totally dedicated to an excursion there? I could spend a few hrs. In this shop !

    You can take a taxi from Phlipsburg to Margot for about $9 pp or a bus on Backstreet for about $2 pp. Last visit I rented a motorcycle and spent most of my time on the French side. (Harleys only no metrics)

  3. "Who knows, as difficult as it is to believe, there may be people out there that would rather cruise regular cabins instead of service souped up YC cabins. "

    I for one would rather cruise in a regular cabin. I would rather cruise 3 times a year than once every 2 year.

    This year I have 3 cruises planned ( a 22, a 21 and a 14 day ) for a total of 57 days. My cost for a "regular cabin" is $7137. The cost for the same 57 days in "The Yacht Club" would be $47,710. I travel solo and am accustomed to paying single supplement. It suffices to say that cruising in the YC would limit me to one cruise per year. Therefore I think I can forgo the Butler, the Concierge and Le Muse.

    Just the opinion.of an old retired soldier.

    I also live in a small townhome and drive a Cadillac !!!

  4. I cruise solo. After contacting a number of TAs they found nothing available for a single traveler. I then called MSC directly. The MSC agent found a single inside cabin with a 40 percent single supplement and a 5 percent military discount. He suggested I do a status match and call him back. Called back and he was able to get me an additional 10 percent discount because it is a 21 day Voyager Select Cruise. With the exceptional service I was able to accomplish my booking in one day.

  5. According to the MSC website: " Kids 12 and under sail free until April 2017. From April 2017 and beyond kids 11 and under sail free on selected sailings,"

    I guess you have to read the fine print.

  6. The suggestions for formal nights in the MDR are quite specific. Evening gown, cocktail dress or elegant pants suit for women. Tuxedo, dark suit or dinner jacket and slacks for men. After 34 years in military I am quite accustomed dress regulations and adhere to the above. As to baggage fees my normal cruise is 14+ for which I use one suitcase and one carry on and will include a tuxedo, a dinner jacket and my military dress uniform plus all the required casual clothes, swimwear and shoes. I always travel by air and have never had an overweight or extra fee situation. So in my opinion I see no reason to not follow the suggested dress. I don't mean to offend anyone this is just the opinion of an old soldier.

    Thank you,

  7. Will be sailing out of San Juan this coming Feb. It has been ten years since my last cruises from Puerto Rico and as I remember it these were some of the most fun cruises ever. The reason being there was an abundance of Puerto Ricans on board and I found them to be the most fun groups ever. On one cruise we partied til 4 AM because the Puerto Rican passengers brought their own instruments with them and they played all night on the Lido deck. Salsa, Tango, Bolero and Limbo all night.

    My question is - for those of you that have recently cruised out of San Juan have you experienced a large number of Puerto Ricans on recent cruises and are they still the party group they were ten tears ago.

    Thank you;

    Richard

  9. The ship is beautiful and the staff very accommodating. The cabin sizes are smaller than I've seen elsewhere. We were "upgraded" to a Junior Suite, which was pretty small for we three older women. The bathroom was great with a beautiful large glass enclosed shower. The pools are tiny, not enough space on the pool decks. As for the food, I was disappointed and realize I don't like free style. As for the demographics, very very mixed. There were many baby boomers, judging by the standing ovation for the Rock Of Ages show. We got it! I don't think I'd cruise on that ship again.

    Thank yoy for the your answer. I guess I will just keep on looking for no single supplement cruises. Just booked Carnival Triumph B2B 2/9/15 & 2/20/15 for $840.

    Again,

    Thank you;

  10. I just found this thread and see it was a busy one in 2005! Here it is August 2014 and hardly breathing. How can we revive it? I'm 66 but always told I look at least ten years younger, which worries me for two reasons. First, what do people expect me to look like? Second, I worry that some morning I will wake up, look in the mirror and discover that I suddenly look like people expect me to, whatever that is. Age does not define me. I retired in october 2010 because my elderly and disabled mother lives 200 miles away and I spend too much time on the road between our homes to make up the time working. I was also embroiled in litigation with my ex. My first cruise as a single senior was in January on the Carnival Splendor with my 18 year old daughter and her friend. Although it rained every day, we had fun. I will be cruising in September onboard the Norwegian Breakaway, with two friends. Again, my main question is how can we revive this thread? I confess that it has been fun reading through the past postings.

    I noticed you cruised the Breakaway. As a single senior how did you like it. What were the demographics and did you find it social.

  11. Thanks for the 411, Colonel! I just booked this very B2B for $739, no single supplement for interior. For the second leg, the military rate was better than the 35 hour sale rate, and I was able to get an "interior" room with portholes.

    I was so glad to get the rate I never checked the military rate! Still a great rate - what's done is done.

  12. As a single and retired I make it a point to check what sales are out there. I have found a number of last minute no supplement deals.

    Booked Carnival Triumph yesterday - B2B Feb 9 (11 days) & Feb 20 (10 days) for $860. That's 21 days @ $41 per day.

    To be honest I would pay double just for the luxury of cruising single.
