  1. I think the whole ride took about three hours, without being in any hurry at all. It's true, the only bike path is for a short stretch returning through Cockburn Town on the ride back. There are not shoulders, and they drive on the wrong ;) side of the road. However, traffic is VERY light, so we did not feel we were in any danger at all.

  2. On 1/21/14, there was a bike rental place at the cruise port (the golf cart rentals are OUTSIDE the cruise port gate). The bike were what you would expect--only one gear, rusty, and "one size fits all." Since I am 6'8", they didn't fit ME very well, but what the hell, we needed to work off some cruise pounds.

$25/bike for all day. Riding was very pleasant. The vendor gave us a good map of the island. We stopped at a couple beaches and made a couple stops in Cockburn Town. If we had turned back there, it would have been a 7-mile ride. But we wanted to see the lighthouse at the other end of the island, so we carried on. There is a bit of a hill that we had to walk up with our one-gear bikes, but it wasn't too bad and the lighthouse is an interesting area. We found a geocache out there!

The ride back was pleasant too, BUT we hit some real tough headwinds in and south of Cockburn town, just as we were at our most tired stage. We had to take breaks and walk the bikes twice to get up minimal rises because it was just too exhasting to fight. What kept me going was looking forward to that beer on the beach at the cruise terminal.

All in all though, it was a great way to experience Grand Turk. We rode 16 miles total.

  3. My wife stayed on-ship to avoid the disease-carrying mosquitoes--they really do love her!

Walked to town, finally figured out what was Back Street (I never did see a sign). A rattletrap white van came by almost immediately with a MAHO MULL sign, so I flagged it down and hopped in. Took maybe 40 minutes to get to Mullet Bay pullout. All the locals had already hopped in and hopped out. They took the local route, not the new causeway.

Mullet Bay was nice but crowded. Food and drink available, plus a portapotty. Only one topless, guarded by her bulldog husband. ;)

Walk back to Maho was short and pleasant. A golf fairway and a shopping area. Maho was a zoo. Couldn't get into Sunset Grill for a drink. No topless. A couple light planes were interesting, but a big jet was really cool! Those people are nuts!

There were many taxis competing to take you back to town or ship from Sunset Grill. I joined a full van with AC and had a pleasant ride back. He also took the local route, not the new causeway. Gave the driver 10 bucks at the cruise terminal.

All in all, a great day.
