  1. We where there Monday on our own tour with our guide meet him at 10.00am spent all day with with went to ship at 6.00 freshened up and changed went back out meet him again and went to dinner and then took us to Tropicana then a taxi back to ship around 12.30 am

Stevanb - any details about your guide and what you did with him from 10AM to 6 PM? Would be very interested to hear more about this. Thanks.

  2. travelbug (nice name!) On the way!

The dailies were very useful determining what we might want to do when. We are going to eat lunch off the ship in both Strasbour and Cologne, not wasting "free time" going back and forth to the ship.

Other than that, can't think of much else. Pace yourself food and drink-wise.

    We sail a week today!

You must be super excited! Just checked my email and haven't received the dailies yet. Will keep checking.

Have a great trip! Thanks for sending the dailies.

  3. Getting excited for our upcoming Rhine Getaway with Viking.

Anyone that's been on this cruise, Basel to Amsterdam, willing to share details of their Viking Dailies?

    Would really help our planning.

    Thanks

When are you going on the Basel to Amsterdam Rhine Getaway? We're leave on July 11th. Have you learned anything on CC that would be worthwhile sharing?

  4. Hi Peg! Thanks for all the advice. We start in Basel and end in Amsterdam.

Just curious as to when you are traveling. I see you are cruising with Avalon. We will be cruising with Viking, Basel to Amsterdam, July 11-18. Would be interesting to compare where you stop.

  5. Amsterdam restaurant suggestions:

Indrapura Rijsttafels (Rice Table) [about 20 shared small plates]

    Indrapura RijsttafelsRice tables » Indrapura

Rembrandtplein 42 - large square full of restaurants, pubs, coffeeshop (head shop)

CAU (Argentinian) CAU Amsterdam - Argentinian beef done our way

(on link go to "find us and book" for Amsterdam info)

Damstraat 5 - very close to Dam Square

Also forgot to mention - a canal trip is fabulous, unless you're doing one with your cruise company. I know it almost sounds silly suggesting a canal ride when you'll be taking a cruise, but it's different and a great way to see the houses and areas of Amsterdam - make sure you take one that goes out into the river - different feeling being so low in the water!!

The Bloemenmarkt (flower market), Waterlooplein flea market, Jordaan area and Magere Brug (Skinny Bridge) are all worth short visits. It's a great city to just walk around - every neighborhood is SO different and interesting!! Also an excellent tram system!!

I'm not a beer drinker, but even I found the Heineken Experience fantastic!

And a final thought - does your cruise go to Kinderdijk??? If it does you'll see wonderful windmills there - so maybe Zaans Schans wouldn't be necessary.

Have a wonderful time there!!! Are you ending in Basel?? Staying there??

Thanks for all your ideas. We will be 3 days in Amsterdam in July, after our river cruise. Any recommendations for a day trip outside of Amsterdam other than Zaans Schans? Is Harlem a good choice?

We will also one day in Basel pre-cruise. Any advice for Basel?

  6. In response to the OP.....

I will be on the Viking Gullveig April 25. I will either try to report while on board or when we return in early May.

Looking forward to hearing all about your trip on the Gullveig!
