  1. We will be on a cruise from Southampton to Ireland and Scotland in September on Princess. We plan to overnite in Southampton before the cruise. Any recommended Hotels?

After our cruise we would like a tour of Bath and Port Isaac(Doc martin locale) wich will take a couple of days. Are there any private tour companies offering this type of tour?

  2. We will be sailing the Rhine from Basel to Amsterdam in mid September on the Avalon Felicity. Any info on what weather we can expect and any concerns about low water levels will be appreciated. We do not wish to be on a bus trip instead of a river cruise.

  3. We are doing a river cruise on the Rhine from Basel to Amsterdam in September. We will be spending two nights in Amsterdam after our cruise and are looking for a nice hotel with a good location to tour the city. We are in our early seventies so no walk-ups.

    We appreciate any suggestions.

  4. We have done two cruise/tour journeys to Alaska, both on Royal Caribbean and loved them both. The first started in Fairbanks and the second in Anchorage. For us it was a benefit to have the whole trip in the hands of one company.

Two main recommendations no matter which method you choose. First, do the land tour portion first and then the cruise. Second, make sure that your tour in Denali is the "wilderness" tour. There are multiple tours offered there but the one you want is the one that goes deep into the park, not just the first 17 miles or so.

No matter what you choose, Alaska is a magnificent place.

  5. LiseD;

Just opened up a thread on the roll calls for our cruise. Just go to roll calls then all river cruises and find it. This will be a good way to exchange info and perhaps have others join in.

I have been checking tours in and around Zurich to see the ease of making daytrips from the Movenpick. We plan on two or three days pre cruise and maybe one or two in Amsterdam.

We will post info on the roll call.

  6. We have been on two Alaska cruises and both times did whale watching with Harv and Marv. It was exceptional both times as they use small boats( we used a six passenger one) that can move places quickly. On our last visit this past September we were in the midst of a pod of 10 or so humpbacks and it was amazing.

We also pre book excursions as we look at CC for recommendations and then "discuss" with others on our cruise board.

  7. We(two couples in early 70's) will be sailing with Avalon in September 2015 on the Rhine from Basel to Amsterdam and wish to do a couple of days in Zurich before the cruise. I know that Avalon offers precruise nights but they are at a hotel near the airport but we wish to be in the city.

Any recommendations on hotels and tour companies??

    Thanks for any info.

  8. We have booked at the Hampton inn on Staten Island. They provide a complimentary shuttle to and from the port and allow you to leave your car at the hotel.

It is the best deal we could find where we did not have to park at the pier. Cost wise it comes out less than parking at the pier.

  9. We have stayed in Barcelona before three different cruises and were only there one night. Two of our stays were at the Hotel Jazz and one was at Hotel Continental. Jazz is about a block from Plaza Catalunya and Las Ramblas while the Continental is right on Las Ramblas.

The comments on Continental about the décor as well as the buffet are all correct BUT if you are there for only one night before your cruise it is OK. The price difference between Continental and others is quite substantial but the location can't be beat for one night.

  10. We will be sailing out of Cape Liberty in June on the Explorer. Trying to decide if we should stay further out and drive to the pier and park there or stay at hotel near the port which allows parking and has shuttle service to and from the port.

We live in Pittsburgh so no air involved. Even thought of driving from Pitt early on sail date to park at pier and avoid a hotel. It is about 6-7 hour drive.

    All advice is greatly appreciated.
