We're scheduled to sail 9/4 and our pre-cruise schedule includes a 3-day stay with DD & SIL near Portland OR. Walgreens, in Oregon, will do both types of tests...AT NO CHARGE. We found that Portland airport has testing facilities but the cost ranges from $135-$335. The higher cost is for the 30 minute turnaround test. Needless to say, we are going to make appointments at Walgreens on the morning of 9/2. Turnaround times for Lab processing (In the PORTLAND area) are beginning to push results out from 1 day to 2-3.

Be careful out there!

Probably precautionary due to passengers returning, most of whom were not masked up while they were out and about. That's my guess.

We were notified yesterday that we will not be boarding Viking Mani in Basel, but instead it will be Viking Idi. It appears on the Rhine shiptraffic.net site that the Mani is still around Strassbourg (Strassburg?). So far, so good, at least we are still able to arrive in Basel. I'm going to attempt to attach a photo of the Rhine River Gorge area that shows the log jam of ships...the ship traffic website posts the names of every ship. The black areas are the stacked up ships with name posted over name. Praying for rain.

I think they come from Cologne to Koblenz, go to Braubach and then return to Koblenz after the excursion. Then leave for Cologne again. But you would need to follow the movements more closely yourself on marinetraffic, I have not looked into the details much. Easiest way is to look for the Viking ships docked in Cologne. Check where they are 12 hours later. Then check again 12 hours later. Etc. You should see the pattern emerging. Should a ship disappear from radar after Braubach somewhere it has entered the Rhine gorge and the signal is lost for quite some hours. When it reappears upstream from Rüdesheim it has made it. A few go from Cologne to Trier, though, like the Viking Mimir today.

 

I cannot see a passage through the gorge happening for a few days... See my previous post.

You are a bit in luck as the Johann Strauss is only 110m long which means she can sail a little better in low water than the 135m ships. How much this helps only captain and company now. If you are in doubt, do contact the river line again closer to the date is my advice.

We leave on the Viking Mani 11/23 from Basel. Any word on the Viking ships making it all the way? We did receive notification from Viking that we will have to do a "ship swap" -- taking it all in stride...it will still be an adventure.

We (2 couples) are flying out of Phoenix, on Thanksgiving Day ( I know, don't say) for Basel Switzerland. Any guesses on what HUB we could be flying from to Basel?

Notamermaid, thank you for all your wonderful information...what a wealth of knowledge. We (2 couples) are sailing Viking Basel-Amsterdam in late November. My questions have to do with water levels & weather -- high or low? Cold & snowy or Cold & raining?

DH and I have just (literally) booked Nov 2018 Basel to Amsterdam on Viking & we talked our friends from Arizona into joining us...they are cruising Newbies. Have been thoroughly enjoying your travelogue. Even though we are a year away from our trip, your messages are so delightful. By they way, we are wintering in Tampa Florida..as a California girl, it is dreadfully hot and muggy...what were we thinking?
