  1. I guess your right ... And I don't know a thing about cruise lines or there crew.

To my uneducated eye, I just thought that if ex-military pilots can transition from F-16s over to commercial 737s, why can't ex-Navy 1st officers go from a Destroyer to Cruise Ships?

All I was really asking .. is where are all the experienced American ship captains? Certainly not on the cruise ships I guess.

Didn't mean to start a flame war or anything like it .. Just a simple question, and now I know.

Should the Captain of a vessel in the U.S. Navy attain a rank above "Captain" and get's to stay in the Navy for more than his 20, he usually becomes a Staff Officer in some form of Administrative/Technical position. Eventually after taking retirement, he will go into government or private industry. What they bring from their previous military experience is leadership along with with knowledge and connections.

  2. Im glad to see that it doesn't effect the general plat/gold club. As to $50.00 richer I hate to say this but by far I am richer only having to do

1 cruise and pay the money. :D

Richer than whom? I hate saying it but your math is faulty. Given we both take the same cruise for the same price, do the same things on shore, etc. you start upside down by $50 before my perks, as meager as they are in some peoples minds, kick in. Rather than the monetary cost of the cruises I have taken, I look at their intrinsic value. The places I've been, the people I have met, the things I have seen and done have provided a much greater total return than if that money had been saved, even at the High Yield rates back in the late 70's. Money may not be able to buy happiness but money spent does buy so much more than happiness. :)

  3. Usually take a tux but sometimes just a suit. I and DW get pictures taken and usually pick one with the 'coupon' we get from PC. Sometimes we change depending on where we are. One thing I have notice, maybe just a coincidence, is that the tables seem to be a lot kinder when I wear the tux. Could be Mom looking down and picking numbers. She always thought I looked "so handsome" all dressed up.

All I know is my honey looks Dynomite!

  4. We have sailed the Victory twice, once going north and once going south. The Fantasy twice, the crew, the ship and most of all New Orleans were great. Will be doing the Pride a second time this year. Love the ship, the crew and it's a 20 minute drive to the port. Will most likely do the Destiny twice, once when she was 'single' and after she becomes Mrs Sunshine.

  5. Traveltripper, Way to go on the red chip. Go to the friends of Bill W meetings & get cabin #s of female attendees. My spouse will drink maybe one glass of wine before dinner and thats all she wants. I just got back from my forth sober cruise and it was one of the best ever. I get the soda sticker on my sail & sign card. My drink of choice now is ginger ale, or fruit juice. It is great to save a pile of $$$$, remember everything I did, feel great in the mornings. The only downside is I have found out I can't dance near as good as I though I could !!!!!!

...if you stick to the slow ones, nobody knows! :D

  6. Love to hear your tips, tricks! What to do and what not, i.e. what truly was fun vs. fun for the drunks! Thanks!

oops, forgot to ask, did anyone see Friends of Bill on the Victory??

There's lots of fun things to do and it turns out that they're even more fun sober. :D They used to have rum punches right outside of the exit from the baggage area of the San Juan terminal. So be careful there. They have meetings on the ship, often sparsely attended. When I was still drinking I would see Friends of Bill W. meeting at 9 a.m. and think these were my kind of people. Didn't make one then cause I didn't know Bill or that he was my friend. The parties on the ship have virgin punches, just be sure to ask for it. Best advice is the same advice you hear over and over again..."Just don't drink." Have a great cruise.

  7. When I got my travel certificate I was promised the cruise would be on Royal Carribbean. I don't want to come off as a snob but Carnival is NOT RC! I just discovered tonight they are doing this bait and switch. Any ideas on how to get them to give you the RC cruise they promised? I already paid my $100 and put in my 4 hours at the time share place to get the certificate!

You do have that promise in writing I hope. Good luck.

  8. But as I said above, you can get many points for $4-5 just depending on your luck. If you put in $4 on a dollar machine and take it all the way up to 1500 credits, then lose it all, you would get the free drinks and it would have only cost you $4. I personally only spent $340 in the casino and hit the 1000 point mark.

You have a point there and all you have invested is $4. On the other hand, you run it up to $1500 and you cash out. Say a drink costs $10 inc tip. That's 150 drinks, anywhere, anytime for anyone. And all it cost was, holy crap, $4.

  9. I believe they have a kids menu with all the kinds of food kids love. I agree the cut of steak in dining room is not the most tender steak in the world, but with all the other options why order steak?

My husband does make it a point every cruise to try and finish off the 24 oz porterhouse served in the supper club, he loves it!!!

    Have a great cruise, Carole

Nice that they have doggie bags.

  10. One disappointment that I experienced on my Carnival Freedom cruise in March was the quality of the beef served in the dining room. The only steak that was offered, and it was available each day if it was not a featured entree, was Flat Iron Steak. While it was "OK", it is not the quality of beef from the tenderloin.

...argued to be the most flavorful portion of the steer. I know for us it makes the best tasting burger. We like our beef anywhere from raw to rare so it is not an issue. Carnival will cook whatever way you want it. Beyond rare, the effort to chew may distract from how good it tastes. :D

The beef in the Supper Club is superb. The portion is outrageous!
