I am planning on replacing my Canon Rebel that is getting long in the tooth. I am wanting to upgrade from a beginner level to more of an enthusiast level. I liked the DLSR and would not mind staying with that type of camera and I am willing to switch brands. It seems like Canon is getting out of the DOSR business and I am wondering what my full size sensor options are. I want something with the heft to hold larger lenses and I am not sure that mirrorless has that heft.
Any ideas?

Is quantum smaller than oasis class?

I’ve been on Atlantis and RSVP about a dozen times with my husband and now I am wondering about trying Pied Piper particularly the post Thanksgiving cruise. I don’t know anyone who has done it so if you could give me any information I would appreciate it.

This seems to a premature posting. The link in the email I got from Canon Canada no longer works. It does not seem to be available in stores. They were open for orders at the Canon site yesterday.

It looks like the Canon 5D 5 is out, at least in Canada. I am not sure if it is on store shelves yet but I received an email from Canon Canada telling me it was available. I believe it is the next step after the Canon 5D Mark IV which I was going to purchase, so if you are thinking of getting a Mark IV the prices may get cut. Or you could mortgage the house and buy the 5D 5.

The water is pretty cold out of New York. You could sail from NJ to Bermuda but the first day and the last day will be cold.
I would say go for at least a week. The Caribbean cruises are fun and a lot of them leave from Fort Lauderdale which is very convenient since the airport is near the port. One problem with the Caribbean may be hurricanes from late July to November.
You get settled in your room late the first afternoon and leave very early the last day, so a 7 day cruise has six clear days onboard.
Another possibility is a Mexican Riviera Cruise. There are some out of San Diego which is a cool little city and very manageable and is one of my favorite places for a departure port.

My first camera was an Olympus *****-1. It was a gift from my father. After that I spent the money I made mowing lawns on Fuji ASA100 black and White film and Clearisil. I developed my own prints at the camera club.
What I really needed was a girlfriend but that is a whole different story

Enjoy the hobby. Taking photos has given me great pleasure over the years.
One last piece of advice, and perhaps the most important advice I can give you. Don't worry too much about the technical stuff. Although I don't do this, and don't recommend it, modern cameras are capable of great results when left on fully auto. Cameras are really smart these days.
Really, much more important than the technical stuff is the artistic stuff. Learn how to compose well and learn how to see the light and shoot in good light. These factors are far more important than f stops, shutter speeds, ISO's and the like.
I have said this before many times. The single most important thing that I ever did to improve my photography was joining our local photography club. Here, we enter images and have others critique them. Through having others look at and comment on my photos, my pictures have gotten much better over the years.
And........ practice, practice, practice.
Thank you from me as well.
I am getting an enormous amount of pleasure from this hobby and have tried to take the advice of focusing on composition. Getting into lighting of course starts us down the road of getting more technical so it seems to be a spectrum.
I am starting to look at better and broader lens options than the kit lens I have been using for a few years.
I think in terms of cruising though one has to be careful not to see the whole cruise through a viewfinder.

We just signed up for this. It is the first time my husband and I will be taking a "straight" cruise. We have done quite a few Atlantis and one RSVP before.
We are looking forward to meeting anyone from this forum.
It seems like a long way off now but I know it will come soon enough.
A bit about us. This cruise will be our 10th wedding anniversary. We have been together since 2001. My husband and I live in Toronto and are in our early, early (lol) fifties.

After 10 Atlantis and RSVP cruises we booked our first straight cruise - or at least as straight as it can be with me and my husband aboard.
We are quite curious regarding what the experience will be like and how it will compare.
We chose a straight cruise this time because it is eastern Mediterranean and very port driven. The charters book up too quickly and often don’t have the combination of dates and ports that we might want. Leaving the comfort of the gay charters gave us so much more flexibility.
We are still going to go on gay charters but this should be a fun way to mix things up

Can you get a table for two or four etc in anytime dining??
I haven’t sailed RC in a while and wasn’t sure how any time dining worked.
Thanks!

My partner and I are planning on going on the cruise but we have not booked yet. The deal they are offering on the booking seems quite good and the deposit is quite small relative to the cost of the trip.
I agree that port intensive cruises like this one are much different than ones like in the Caribbean where one's main focus is getting into some warm weather (especially if you are Canadian and coming to the Caribbean in the winter).
The cruise also seems more attractive because of the 9 day length which permits seeing more places but still keeps the price reasonable.
I expect we will book in the next couple of weeks.
I did have one question about any time dining. Are you able to request a table for two or four or are you seated at a larger table with strangers?

Is there any real difference between a concierge room and a regular balcony room? The only real difference I have seen from the site seems to be unlimited internet, at least for the cruise I am looking at.

Does anyone have recommendations on the best places (I.e. websites) for photography courses? I’m looking both for technical pointers about the particular model as some general lessons. I’ve looked at Kelby and am interested in opinions on that and similar “products”.
I learned the basics 40 years ago with f stops and depth of field etc. but after all these years and with the change in technology what I learned from my old Olympus does quite cut it.
One thing I’m finally getting used to is really letting the shutter rip when I have a card with tons memory. Sure beats the pants off having one expensive roll of film with only 24 exposures.
Thanks

This is in just over a week. So I thought I would bump it up.

I have a cruise from Auckland to Sydney coming up. I am thinking of getting a pass for the hydro pool and thermal suite for the whole trip because I think that for the bulk of the time the air will be cool on the decks (the opposite of a Caribbean cruise).
When do they sell the passes? Do they sell them on check in online or on embarkation?

As usual I will add nothing useful to the discussion but thank you for the magnificent shots. I’m having a dreary day and they have brought a little bit of beauty into it.

Sometimes when you are using a quality camera and are immersed in what you doing on an excursion and suddenly want to capture a moment you don’t have time to make adjustments. So my default is to leave the camera on auto and adjust the settings when and if you have the time.
On the iPhone issue I would skip the iPhone add on lens and just spend the $25 for the cord that lets you transfer photos from your SD card to your iPhone.
The iPhone camera is as good as iTunes, which compresses music. ITunes is fine for pop music in the background but if you want to listen to classical and really enjoy it you need a CD or vinyl and a modest amp and speakers.

I'm interested in signing up for this cruise and would be a solo. If anyone else is in the same position, reach out. I'd rather not go with a completely random pairing.
PHIL
PM me and I might be able to help you. There are definitely guys looking for roommates.

I’m on this cruise with my partner in a C3. I’m really looking forward to it. We’ve waited a while for an Atlantis cruise that hit all of the ports we wanted to see and very few that we didn’t.
I expect it will be a party cruise but we are going mostly to see the Greek islands from the water and to walk/hike on the various stops.

Don’t miss the steak house on board. If you like steak it is great. They have really fantastic cuts of meat and the service is superb.
After Oceania every other cruiseline is a letdown!

I would like it if people dressed well every night in the dining room. There are jeans that are dressy (you can spend $200 on what they used to call designer jeans) and they would be fine for me every night except a gala night. I hate ball caps in the dining room. This isn’t Carnival or Disney.
Can’t we all try and look decent for one meal a day?

A Montreal tour would be a good idea. I’ve been to the city many times and you could see a lot of the city in an afternoon. With a mountain in the middle and being situated on an island the topography of the city is really interesting. The airport isn’t that hard to access either.

Camera Suggestion Pls (DLSR)

I understand I need new lenses for the 6D. One of the reasons for upgrading is that I want better lenses and there are a better assortment of high quality lenses with the full frame sensor cameras (though clearly not the main reason to go for a full frame sensor).
