  1. I have booked this excursion with my adult children in their 50s. I am a fit and healthy 81-year-old. The Notes on the website for this excursion says:

    • Guests must negotiate an extensive uphill walk with 90 steps from the bus parking to the medieval village of Èze. In Monaco, guests must navigate escalators and walk up an incline to the Old Town.

I am used to walking three or 4 miles a day and have no health issues.

Can anyone tell me if this Walk is a graduated walk or straight uphill? I did a similar walk in Budapest to the top of Buda Hill and was OK because the steps were spread out. I am a little concerned and didn’t see that part of the description when I booked it.

  2. We are staying overnight in Rome on June 22 after our cruise and planned on doing the Colosseum night tour with Arena and underground. We had a reservation with GetYourGuide that was canceled a month after I made it. I checked the official website for the Colosseum and could not book any date after April 30. Do they only sell tickets for the current month? When will I be able to buy tickets on that website for June 22 directly from them?

  3. How much in advance do we need to purchase tickets for the fast ferry to Capri from the Naples port? We are will be there on June 21 and plan on taking the 8:05 AM  or 8:35 am ferry over to self explore the island.

  4. We are four adults looking for a private tour guide for our first day in Florence. Ship will be overnight, so we would like to do a tour privately, that would give us the luxury of returning to the ship at our own discretion. All of the excursions I have seen return you to the ship at 4 or 5 p.m. We would like to make our own itinerary since three of us have been to Florence before. We know that it takes an hour and a half each way to get to and from Florence. That is why we are hoping to do our own tour.

Your hotel is about a 20 minute walk to the Forum. The other sites (Colosseum, Palatine Hill, Baths of Caracalla) are nearby.

You probably do not want to do all four of the ancient sites. The Colosseum and Forum are usually the most popular. Skip Palatine unless you are really interested in ancient Rome. I like to recommend the Baths of Caracalla because they are such a well preserved example of what Roman baths were like, in all their grandeur.

I again would suggest that you (or your daughter) take a look at the Rick Steves' self-guided tours and see whether you think you could do them on your own. I prefer to do it on my own, but I realize everyone is different and maybe you get a lot more out of a guided tour. (I do a lot of research and reading in advance.)

  6. Thank you again cruisemom.  I looked at the Jewish ghetto and it was of interest to me.  I found a tour on TripAdvisor, but do you think we should do it on our own,  my daughter is very good at navigating cities with google maps.   How far is the Forum from our hotel?  How long would it take to do the Coliseum /Forum/Baths/Palatine.  I am a good walker and thankfully good health.  Since I’ve seen the Coliseum I wasn’t sure about doing it again, but I know my daughter would appreciate it.

  7. Thank you cruisemom.  I will check out the baths of Caracalla.  I read reviews that say they were not impressed with Palatine Hill.
I do agree that the Spanish steps can be missed.

Since we are Jewish, I don’t think my daughter will think the Vatican and Sistine Chapel are a must.

our hotel is the Trevi Collection, recommended by my travel agent.  It seems centrally located.

i would appreciate any suggestions you have.

  8. I love the charm of historic areas and scenic beauty of nature.  Thank you for any suggestions.  I am 81 traveling with my 55 year old daughter who has never been to Italy.  We leave the ship on Saturday and plan to get to our hotel, check in and walk around seeing the Trevi Fountain, Spanish steps, the Forum and whatever we can cover in the afternoon. So I need a plan for Sunday..

  11. I am staying 2 nights post cruise in Rome.  The 2nd day is a Sunday.  Is the Vatican and that area closed to visitors?  Any suggestions?  I have seen most of the must sees in Rome.

  12. He was referring to nap time. You said you would stay on the balcony or elsewhere while your husband was sleeping. I think he thought that if you had the beds pulled apart that you would not disturb him. Moving around in the same bed will probably affect his nap. Why do you go elsewhere when he is napping? Noise?

No, it wouldn't disturb him if I moved in the bed. Yes, any sound would wake him. Now I have a back problem, which causes me pain when sitting, so staying on the balcony is not going to work. Walking and laying down are not a problem though I may have to just stay and he will have a shorter nap, maybe more than one or two.

  13. Has anyone been to Cabbage Beach recently? We we there a few years ago. We had to walk up a hill to get to the beach. Now my husband walks with a cane and has limited mobility. Is there an easier way to get on to the beach?

  14. You say he loves cruising,is happy being out and interacting with other people.

There is your answer,if you quietly let other people you meet know your situation, they also should keep an eye out for him.(if they are worth anything).

Between yourself and your son,tag teaming should work.Between yourself and your son and others,it should defiantly work.Go,Go,Go on this cruise, and plan many more after it.:):)

Thank you so much for your thoughts. Your words gave me spark of hope that brightened my day. I love seeing him have a good time because most of his days are so gloomy, all he does is eat and sleep, and sometimes watch tv.

  15. What ship is your son considering? Most of the short ones are noisy booze cruises for SOFLA locals, especially on weekends. This does not go well with dementia. Find out. I see even Celebrity is doing shorties; maybe abit more sedate on X. For naps, just have beds pulled apart by cabin steward at cruise beginning.

We are supposed to go on Carnival next month because it was the only time that works for my son's family schedule. We have been okay on Carnival and have been able to avoid any seriously crazy and noisy situations.

I don't understand pulling the beds apart. He would be very upset if I weren't sleeping in the bed with him. What would that do?

  16. All of the excursions we found for Freeport seemed to be pretty expensive so we had planned to just find a taxi. That morning when our ship pulled into port our Carnival ship announced beach day excursions that you could sign up for on the lido deck.

This went to the same area as some of the more expensive beach day/alcohol included types of excursions. For our budget this worked out very well so I wanted to share in case others were in the same position.

I took a little walk around video.

How did you hear about this offer? We are seniors and my husband is handicapped, I would just love to do this.

  17. Truluv: Thank you for sharing your experience. My husband is in the moderate stage of dementia. His short memory is very limited, and he has limited walking ability. He hasn't driven in 7 years.

You mentioned having difficulty with the waiter. Thankfully, I usually tell the waiter on the first day about my husbands condition, and there is no problem. At this point in his condition, his tastes have have changed to the point that he mostly wants carbs; no meat, vegetables, just potatoes, bread, and some fruit. (Of course desserts). That is another challenge.

  18. We have been to Nassau many times. My husband relies on a wheelchair now and can only walk limited distances. I would love to go to the beach, but don't want to go for a day pass, just an hour or two. If we took a taxi or walked to Junkanoo Beach, how would It work out with the wheelchair. I thought we might go to Paradise Island by water taxi, but I read that it could be tricky for him.

We haven't been to Freeport in a number of years. Any suggestions as to what we might do there would be appreciated.

We are on the Carnival Conquest 7-7-16.

  19. We have been to Nassu numerous times, so I don't want to tour downtown or shop. I have been to Junkanoo Beach before, but I'm not sure how to manage with the wheelchair. If I can get to a beach for a couple of hours without an all day pass, I would be happy, he can walk a little, if there would be beach chairs and I can maneuver the wheelchair, which is 18 pounds.

  20. My husband had dementia when we went on a seven day cruise with family and friends and he did wander if we got separated. May I suggest you stay with your husband as much as possible and maybe have your son look after him too. My husband's brother always went with him to the Men's Room and that worked out well. Go and enjoy as much as you can and remember it's going to make him happy since he loves to cruise, so did my husband.

My problem is what to do when he naps. I used to leave him in the cabin and come back in an hour and if he was sleeping come back again. I can stay on the balcony a little while, but it gets too hot and uncomfortable. Otherwise I never leave him. I wait outside bathrooms and if I worry, I stop someone going in or out to check.
