  1. if you want to haul luggage around, you could...you might be better off hiring a taxi and doing a quick tour around town..you could have luggage with you. like twin peaks, if not foggy, run out to the bridge and crissy field..out to lands end and stop at visit center there...

or get a hire car to do this. then they could take you right to airport by 12:30.

I don't think there is anything at pier 39 worth the effort to see in an hour or two.

there is decent food in the food court at the international terminal outside security..like good sushi.

  2. I have lived here 30 yrs and am a nanny. Exploritorium...no 1 attraction for kids of that age. academy of sciences is ok..pricey..and good for a couple of hours. I would go to pompanito submarine and museum mechanique (with a roll of quarters) at fisherman's wharf. maybe see the ships at hyde street pier. downtown (soma) at 4th and mission) is Zeum--great digital stuff hands on place. if you have more time, take the L-taraval muni train all the way out to the beach and go to the zoo. the zoo is across the street from the end of the line..takes at least an hour on train.but you see the real SF. a fun place to eat is toy boat cafe on 5th and clement.

tour the ball park. go to cable car museum (by chinatown)--free. rent bikes and ride down crissy field and up to the golden gate bridge. tour Ft. Point and learn about civil war forts. skip children's playground in gg park. nothing that special.

depending on interests, you could wander around japantown and eat dinner there and check out the bookstore if they like manga.

start the day with breakfast at the ferry building. lots of choices there. get alcatraz tickets as soon as you can as they sell out most the time. be sure and have a coat with you the entire day in sf no matter what the weather. we rarely get over 60. this week we are dying and it is 75-80. weather is different depending on what side of town you are at.

  3. It is safe enough..though there may be still construction around there. you do not want to walk to cruise terminal. you could walk to fisherman's wharf...but it will take awhile..I would grab a bus. they run on van ness.

You could take bart, then the bus..but with luggage...just grab a taxi or super shuttle.

if you stay there, just plan to ride buses and take taxis...no place is really too far from anywhere else.

  4. I would think you would have to rent one in seattle..or somewhere north like northgate area, alderwood mall, etc. there is nothing on orcas..I would bet and even anacortes is a really small town..maybe look at mt vernon or burlington for a health supply store..but again. sounds like a big hassle.

then who would return it? orcas is way too small to have something. you just have a few general stores and such. I would get a reservation and drive onto orcas or fly in...

  5. I would take a pedicab. they hang out on the sidewalks by the ferry building and maybe up towards pier and exploritorium.museum..faster than taxi as they go in bike lanes or on sidewalks.

the food in the park is good...lobster rolls, garlic fries...plenty of time even to walk to park. or you could catch the muni F car...right near pier...and get off at ferry building..transfer to a N car or KT muni car..catch underground at ferry building..use the transfer you get on F car..or walk a few blocks and catch on embarcadero road (they come out from underground by the giant arrow). and take to ball park.

avoiding the road is your best bet

  6. I would only do this if 1. you make reservations with washington state ferries for trip there and back

    2. you check the tides..call the ferry people as the ferry can be held up by low tides sometimes.

    3. willing to take a bit of a risk.

you could do a walk on and take island bus to coupeville..very cute town nearby--eat on the wharf. the buses are free.

I wouldn't do it personally from port angeles. I would go to hurricane ridge or drive up to sol duc hot springs...hike up to the falls, then go soak in hot springs.

or check out forks..and the great little logging museum. or drive down hood canal and eat oysters.

  7. there are hotels and businesses in oyster point. it would be no big deal for the hotel to call you a taxi...one could come from the airport in less than 5 minutes. you can also order a super shuttle.

it may take the same time from oyster point to pier 27 as it would from marina district with traffic. depends on traffic and time of day. oyster point is right off hiway 101 just north of the airport.

  8. rent a car and go up to snoqualmie pass...take a short hike into the woods, or just look around. some nature trails are to be found near to the pass.

or even just drive up to stevens pass..a little more remote...about 1.5-2 hours one way from seattle with no construction. if there is construction forget it.

  9. there are plays, concerts, dance concerts, maybe even a giants ball game (check the schedule--even if not a baseball fan, the park is a fun experience)--and very american. the ball park is right down the road on public transport from the ship. take a night ferry...round trip from the ferry building. walk through chinatown. walk the labyrinth at night at grace cathedral on nob hill...again, go up by cable car. take taxi to top of twin peaks for a cool view if there is no fog.

walk across the golden gate bridge.. small music venues are all over.

check the local paper..sfgate.com for some information.

  10. scomas...down the water front just a bit...or the cliff house..take the geary bus from union square and see the real sf--and take taxi back.

us locals do not go to pier 39...I think I have been there 2 times in 30 yrs. and I used to catch the boat at pier 41 every day to work on alcatraz...
