  1. You need to celebrate everyday. You never know when it will be your last.

We took a very spontaneous cruise out of Boston in July of 2012. We surprised our kids, and had many relatives join us. There were 30 of us, myself, husband, son, daughter, dad, step-mom and many more family and friends.

Ten days after the glorious cruise my dad found out he had a tumor the size of a softball in his liver. It had spread there from his bile ducts. Four months later we celebrated Thanksgiving, fairly certain it would be my dad's last. I wish I had known it would be my husband's last. I found his body on my kitchen floor five days after Thanksgiving. My dad last eight months after that. My sister lost her mother in law two months after losing our dad. All three of them enjoyed the cruise. And all of us have everlasting memories.

I've been on two cruises since, as a widow, with my two teenagers. I didn't have the best time, but the kids had fun. So, my advice is to cruise when you have the chance, because life is really too short...it especially was for husband who had a fatal heart attack at 51, with no cardiac history whatsoever.

  2. Has anyone ever felt this way? My husband suffered a fatal heart attack 15 days ago. We already have airfare, and we were booked on the Legend. I'm just afraid I will be too lonesome, missing my husband. My kids will probably enjoy the kids club. Anyone experience a situation like this?

Sitting here, preparing for my next cruise, I realized I never followed up with this thread. Well, I did go on the cruise, with my two teenagers, and was glad I did. We flew into Jacksonville, and I rented my very first rental car. We stayed with my brother the day before the cruise. We went on the Legend out of Tampa. The cruise was nice, although very sad when the 3 of us (with ATD) were brought to a table of 4. Seeing the extra table setting was very sad. We returned to the same table each night, with 3 settings. The staff was wonderful and so understanding. I decided the first night that I could watch people have fun, or try to have fun myself. I really stepped out of my comfort zone...I volunteered for games, including the trivia game up on stage, which I won...and the "secret dance classes", and much more. But the biggest challenge was on the way home when the Port of Tampa was closed due to fog. We had to change our flights, as did everyone on the ship, take a shuttle to the Tampa airport, rent a car to drive to the Orlando airport, to take the only flight we could get on back to Boston on the last day of the President's week vacation. We made that flight by the skin of our teeth. But we did it. I was very proud of myself, and my two kids. They were a huge help. We have continued to cruise. We went on the Glory out of Boston in June, and are going on the Breeze in February. The President's week cruise tradition is something my husband started, and I will continue for the sake of the kids.

Thanks for all the well wishes and support.

  3. Thank you all for your well wishes and support. It really is a community here on CC. I cried and laughed in reading the comments.

My husbands death was from a massive heart attack, with no cardiac history. I found him lying on the floor in our family room when I came downstairs from the shower. It was the scariest thing I've ever encounter, and I'm a nurse.

We loved cruising together, and had planned on cruising much more after we retire, or at least turn 55-to get a discounted rate. The kids would be out of high school, or at least close.

He was 51, I am 52. Our kids are 16yo son, 14yo daughter.

We introduced them to cruising in 2006, and have gone on one every February vacation since. Oddly, we took an extra cruise this past July, when the Glory was home-ported in Boston.

After reading, and thinking, since we still have airfare to Florida, we should go on at least a short one, then maybe spend time some of my family that lives down there.

I've never joined a roll call, but maybe this is the time to start.

    Thanks again everyone.

Treat everyday as a special occasion.

    ~Lynne
