    sail,

Each time I post, I go into the tool bar above the posting window and change the print to "B" bold and change the font size to 18 or higher.

I'm in my 40's with good eyes and this default font and lack of contrast is painful for me. Glad to read they are looking into it.

  2. According to Capt. Albert the main thrust of the next dry dock will be to paint the hull and coat it with algae preventative.

Inspection of both Azipods and the Propellers has taken place in Amsterdam the last two sailings.

  3. Just a sample, too lazy to create a jpg of all of them :)

  4. Just looking at your first arrival photos, I would have to agree with your daughter that the suite is indeed small. :) We have never cruised on NCL, just Holland & Princess. Their suites appear much larger with at least a full sofa. The balcony looks depth challenged as it looks like a lounger will just fit with no space to get around it.

That said; I was wondering if you had seen any mobility scooters on your cruise. The hallway picture looked narrow and difficult. Do you feel that there was enough room in your suite for a scooter? For my DW it is a must have, and the reason we book suites.

Thank you for your most informative story, looking forward to more.

  5. Noroviruses can spread by air up to several meters from an infected person, according to a study published in the latest issue of the journal Clinical Infectious Diseases. The findings suggest that measures applied in hospitals during gastroenteritis outbreaks may be insufficient to effectively contain this kind of infection.

Caroline Duchaine, Université Laval's Faculty of Science and Engineering and Québec Heart and Lung Institute (IUCPQ) Research Centre, Quebec City, Quebec, and colleagues conducted the study at 8 hospitals and long-term care facilities affected by gastroenteritis outbreaks. The researchers gathered air samples at a distance of 1 meter from patients, at the doors to their rooms, and at nursing stations.

Noroviruses were found in the air at 6 of the 8 facilities studied. The viruses were detected in 54% of the rooms housing patients with gastroenteritis, 38% of the hallways leading to their rooms, and 50% of nursing stations.

Virus concentrations ranged from 13 to 2350 particles per cubic meter of air. A dose of 20 norovirus particles is usually enough to cause gastroenteritis.

According to Dr. Duchaine, this previously unknown mode of norovirus propagation could explain why gastroenteritis outbreaks are so hard to contain.

“The measures applied in hospital settings are only designed to limit direct contact with infected patients,” said Dr. Duchaine. “In light of our results, these rules need to be reviewed to take into account the possibility of airborne transmission of noroviruses. Use of mobile air filtration units or the wearing of respiratory protection around patients with gastroenteritis are measures worth testing.”

  6. As of 500p 7/27/15 there have been postings by 80 individual CC members.

Of those 80 CC members, 69 responded with YES, 3 responded with NO, and 8 were unresponsive to the OP choosing to use their post(s) for personal agendas.

Of those 69 who responded with YES - 35 stated they were nonsmokers and had never been bothered by smoke of their veranda.

Joanie I've got you tallied as a YES but if I were to add your hubby to the count I'd have to go back and see who else responded with the implication that there were 2 of them. Guess it goes without saying that the majority (or close to that) of CC members sail with partner/friend.

Since a few have implied that this thread is slanted to only show those who "smoke" I'm going to give a try at compiling data off sails' thread that asks "Have you or are you planning to switch to HAL because you can no longer smoke on your favorite cruise line's verandah?

Have you or are you planning to switch cruise lines because you do not like that HAL continues to permit smoking on verandahs?

Do you have friends or family who are doing one or the other?"

It's going to take me a bit of time though as I'm going to have to read through post much longer that the ones here but figure it will make for interesting comparison.

There comes a time in life, when you walk away from all the drama and people who create it.

  7. Bingo!!! Many folks on CC think that whatever opinion is published here is the final word in all of cruising. The average size of all the meet n greets I've attended is probably around 40. Some larger and some smaller of course, but considering the passenger capacity on some of those ships, CC represents a small percentage.

To answer the question posed by the OP...yes, we will continue to cruise on HAL if balcony smoking remains.

Good post. The same people with the same song, over and over again. CC probably doesn't realize how many people have left this forum because of this clique.

I will continue on HAL also.

  8. As non-smokers, we will continue to sail on HAL with its current smoking policy. The current smoking policy has not deterred us

I am a firm believer, based on my cruising on HAL ships, that smoking on HAL ships is just an issue for a small number of CC posters only and not an issue for HAL and the vast majority of its passengers. Smoking is a Cruise Critic issue, not a HAL issue. There is a considerable difference between the two.

Bingo!! Has never bothered us in the least.

  9. We have cruised four TAs. Two on Princess, two on HAL. Without a doubt there is much more activity on Princess than on HAL. The night life runs later! The scooter situation, usually an age indicator was about the same. We just found it more sedate on HAL vs more nightly entertainment on Princess.

  10. I believed it to be mg/dl since they are nearest US medical treatment and yes, this difference is usually encountered in Europe. Nonetheless I double checked it and yes it was mg/dl. Good catch, though.........

I have never been on any Princess ship that used that scale. Many cruises many glucose tests, all using mmol/L and I had to convert it.

It really doesn't matter where the nearest treatment center is, to my humble knowledge their Doctors are all British.

  11. I am a smoker, and would not sail if I couldn't smoke on my balcony. That being said, I can't imagine finding cigarette butts on my balcony or causing mine to blow on my neighbor's. Beside the wonderful "spinning" ashtrays that our room steward always provides, I don't even trust them in the slightest breeze. I always use a cup or glass with water in it, so EVERY ash is immediately doused. Then I put the butt in the ashtray. If all smokers would do this, it would reduce fire risk and blowing ashes and butts to all around one's balcony. PLEASE be courteous, smokers!!!!!

Half full of water Coke can makes better ashtray :)
