  1. We are on Viking with the option to go to Cesky Krumlov with the the ship. However, we are extending our cruise to Prague after Passau (on our own).  So we could do Cesky Krumlov on our way to Prague since we have a private driver.  This would allow us to do Satzburg the day the ship is going on the excursion to Cesky Krumlov.  It looks like 3 trains/hour go to Salzburg from Linz.

Does it make sense to do both cities on our own (we are in our 50’s so train travel on our own is no problem for us) or does it make more sense just to do Cesky Krumlov with the ship and do something else on our way to Prague? This would leave Salzburg for another trip.

Worried that one one day In Salzburg would not be enough or we would feel too rushed.

Worried that seeing Cesky Krumlov on our own would not be as good as with a Viking guide.

But..if we do them on our own we see both.  Thoughts and help appreciated!

We have been to all three. We did CK on our own and Salzburg and Passau as part of a Uniworld tour. CK is the best as far as we are concerned. Salzburg is OK as well but a notch below CK. We did not find Passau all that wonderful. Just OK. The church there is nice, as it is a lot of white plaster which is much different from the others we saw in Europe. Of couse this is just an opinion and YMMV.

If you are going to stay over in Prague you can drive to CK on your own, either on the way to Prague after the cruise or when you leave Prague to catch the cruise. That is what we did. That way maybe you can take both the CK and the Salzburg excursions. We used a private car service and it worked out fine. We stopped on our way to the ship in Passau and had about three and one half hours in CK which was plenty of time.

We are trying to decide what to do on our River Cruise.  Since we are extending (on our own) from Passau to Prague we can stop and see Cesky Krumlov then.  This would mean we would do Salzburg (on our own) the day everyone from the ship is Inc Cesky Krumlov.   We are in our 50’s and are not afraid of taking trains by ourselves.  Would you recommend this as opposed to doing Cesky Krumlov with the ship and missing Salzburg? Thank you! So happy to see that someone else did what I am thinking we should do!
