  1. I was on the inaugural cruise of Carnival Elation in 98 and brought it out from Miami to San Pedro.  It was nice but nothing spectacular.  Carnival ship decorator, Joe Farkas, was onboard and he was a great guy. They shot a lot of pics and were filming commercials onboard so areas were cordoned off. Kathy Lee Gifford also embarked in LA to film her singing commercial.

I thought it would be a bit more special being an inaugural with maybe a special gift to the first guests but nothing.  It was still a very good trip and it was special to me and I enjoyed it tremendously and know you will too.

I’m booked on the January 11 voyage and booked it in March of 2018 and never waited this long for a cruise either but it was really cheap for a cove balcony.

I hope you have a wonderful cruise and look forward to hearing about it.

  2. I’m happy the West Coast is getting a new ship. I’ve been on fantasy class, Spirit class most.  I was on the Elation inaugural cruise that brought the last new carnival ship to California in 1998.  Didn’t book the inaugural for Panorama but will be on in the first month.

Originally booked a cove balcony cabin but went with the regular balcony since my travel buddy gets seasick easily. I think the cove balcony cabins really have the feeling of water rushing by On that low deck.

  3. I also enjoyed your review and can't believe how quickly time passes. I was on the Inaugural trip of the Elation (first paid passengers) when we brought her from Miami to Los Angeles and San Francisco Mar 20 - Apr 6, 1998. I loved that 16-day voyage through the Panama Canal and we went right into SF after LA. We had a nice stateroom, U90, and because no one had ever used the jetted bath, the first time I used it all the jets were aimed up and shot out the bathroom and onto the wallpaper when it turned it on. After a few hours the wallpaper started to peel off the wall and I felt so bad. They quickly fixed it and I remember it fondly like an old friend. Joe Farcus was on that cruise and I got to meet him and Kathy Lee Gifford got on the ship in LA to film a commercial. She used to sing a song about each ship that Carnival gave out on VHS tapes if you requested it.

  4. Are you talking about going from a cat 8C to OS. 8C cabin 185 sq ft, balcony 35 sq ft OS cabin is 275 sq ft balcony is 65 sq ft. You also get another big window in the bigger room. If it is still on Empress mid-ship, I would take it. I did find junior suites forward on Lido deck next to the Captains Suite and I would avoid that due to the location of all the way forward. I would take it for the bigger balcony and room but if money is a concern, you have a great room with a balcony already.

  5. I was on Star Princess on Jan 3 for 10 -days and they did have the menu items but we got not one thing with the 50 anniversary and just the regular plastic bag in room. I have a canvas one from them for their 25th that I like.

All the 50th anniversary logo items were very expensive in the gift shop and I think we should have received maybe on drink or shot glass as some of the first guest of their anniversary year. The tiny drink glasses were about $18.

  6. Great review and I see things like buckets in hallway and maintenance with power tools during sea days (my cruise in January had them cutting up aluminum ducts the entire 15 days above the rear terrace pool) hasn't changed. This was my least favorite cruise On all of my 27 cruises and I will never sail on Grand again.

Email Atlantis and ask them to join the Alumni group as you are booked on the cruise and they will send you an invite. I found the Alumni site very helpful in advance of my first cruise on them last Nov.

Atlantis cruises are excellent. The White party was so fantastic and way beyond what I have ever experienced on an RSVP cruise. Deborah Cox was on board and gave two shows that night and then went up for the White Party. It was incredible and I have video of it on the alumni site from last years cruise.

I wasn't expecting much from this cruise as I had been on about 5 RSVP cruises but Atlantis, Carnival Cruise Lines, and fellow passengers greatly exceeded my expectations. I thought the guys were friendlier on Atlantis and I would gladly go again but not on Princess and I hate that class of ship (Grand Class) that they use.

You can really get by for all the parties by wearing different kind of underwear each night like many men did. Camo, Black, White you name it.
