Thanks for posting all days of the Cruise Compass. Comes in very handy to get a sense of what is offered.

I didn't see any mention of the "Escape Room" that I read about on other posts as being offered on Anthem. Did I overlook it? Do you know if it was offered as an activity? and if so, would you remember how often it was offered?

Thanks again for posting your info. DH and I sail 1 week from today, on the July 1st cruise. Can't wait!!

  2. ^ before going into any of that, see if your phone and carrier support WiFi calling, much simpler and is free.

Well, I chickened out and did not download any of the message-apps that claim they can connect to a landline through wifi!

I was eligible for an upgrade, so I bit the bullet (cause there was nothing wrong with my iPhone 5s) and upgraded to the iPhone SE, so I too now have wifi calling! I did test it using a public wifi connection and called our shop's landline and it worked great! I sent an imessage to my son over the wifi as well with no problems!

All the cruise critic members that have sung the praises of wifi calling seem to be right! I am going to assume it will work as smoothly once onboard. And an added bonus, I am getting Voom complimentary with my grand suite :D

! week and 1 day to go!

Thanks again everyone for your advice, help, feedback!

PS: Does anyone know if I would be able to imessage aboard ship with my husband who has the 5s (therefore no wifi calling) but of course can pick up wifi?

  3. I've used Skype many times to call phone numbers (i get free Skype minutes with my office 365 subscription). Facebook messenger also works quite well as a "call" to someone else who uses it.

Thank you Geldhart for replying. So if I understand you correctly, you have used Skype while cruising to call landlines back in the US? That is what I need to do, using the ships wifi.

I've been looking at the Skype rates and they are not that bad (compared to using cell towers roaming fees, etc). How do you find the quality of the voice calls from aboard ship to a landline? Can the person back in the States (NY) call from their landline to my mobile phone?

I greatly appreciate your feedback as I have 13 days until we embark and I have to get this phone stuff figured out and set up so we can talk to our business while we are away.

Any information / wisdom you can share is appreciated :D

  4. I was told that I need a special app in order to use the I phone to make Wi-Fi calls. Based on what you indicated, no special app is required.

I have been researching the best way to keep in touch with our business while we are on the Anthem the first week in July. The WiFi calls is a Godsend not only for accessibility but also for the cost! My carrier is Verizon, but unfortunately both my husband and I have the I-phone 5s which means our phone does not have WiFi call ability (through Verizon) built in.

Someone told me about the free apps: "WhatsApp" and "Viber" which are supposed to allow you to do WiFi calling from your phone through these apps.

Has anyone had any experience using either or both of these apps?

  5. Hello!

I was the original poster about Colin Jennings, who I met several years ago on one of my trips to Bermuda. I see him every year, at least once, if not twice. He was, and still is, a wonderful tour guide. As a native Bermudian, and a former Bermuda mailman, he has a wonderful knowledge of the island and many, many great stories to tell.

It is always nice to pre-arrange a day with a private guide, so that he will be waiting for you at the dock at the time YOU tell him. You can plan your day in advance, based on what is important to you and your friends/family.

He only is able to check his emails about once a week, but he will get to you and reply as soon as he can. Don't give up on him if you don't hear right back. I tell him that Amercians are an impatient group as a whole when it comes to planning ahead! He is worth the wait!!!

    Hope this helps!- Miriam

Thank you Miriam for your invaluable advice and referral to Colin Jennings. My sister and I are on the May 1st sailing of the Caribbean Princess from San Juan to NYC. I have been to Bermuda before but my sister has not and there are several things I want to make sure she sees in the day while we are there. A private taxi-tour is an ideal arrangment for us. Having your (& other CC members) reccomendation of Colin is great. I am also thankful that you advised to be patient for a reply since I was getting

ansy. I e-mailed Colin on 3/15th and did not get a reply until today (3/25th). I mentioned your name in my e-mail. Here's what Colin had to say:

"Please tell the people on cruise critics thank you for the good reviews. I have done a few tours with Miriam and her friends and I consider them friends of mine now."

Thanks again. I am soooo looking forward to Bermuda and my cruise!:D
