  1. We were on the Volendam's last cruise - 77 day cruise around South America and Antarctica.  Oops.  Make that 75 days as we came back two days early as our last ports of call had the virus and, thankfully, wouldn't let us dock.  No one on the ship had the coronavirus.

It was so good to hear and see the singers and dancers again.  We felt that they were the best we have ever seen on 50+ cruises.

Sorry that they haven't gotten home yet.  So many were excited to see their children or spouses again, plan their wedding, etc.

  2. They offered a tour of the laundry area.  Someone saw the sign on the door and asked about it.  Our tour leader left and came back with authorization to show us.

BTW:  The entire laundry area got a redo in October. It is really hi-tech now.

Not sure how we got the invitation as we were only on our third HAL cruise but are 3 star Mariners.  Glad we did, though.

  3. We were on the Volendam for her last voyage.  A day or so after we boarded I started losing energy and just wasn't myself.  Plus our room was very cold.  Asked for an additional blanket during week two after we contacted maintenance twice and they found nothing wrong.  Didn't help much and I was tired of wearing my night clothes, a heavy sweater, bathrobe and the extra blanket folded in half.

Finally went to Guest Services.  Two days later a lot of time was spent by maintenance poking around the ceiling and vent. Never another problem.  Never saw him change a filter.  We actually lowered the temp a couple degrees and were comfortable the rest of the cruise.

I did end up in Medical and had to go to a clinic for further tests.  Nothing found.  Got my energy back the first week in February.

Something was definitely wrong with the system.

Have to say everyone was very kind and helpful.

  4. Thanks.  I had searched for a picture of our stateroom, which is either 3367 or 3369, depending upon which information I look at from Hal.  I am so glad we will be able to see quite a bit of the ocean.  Now I will hope we don't have to kneel on the bed to look out.

As for the TV and fridge, I really didn't think there would be a fridge but was hoping for an updated TV.  I had read the same thing you sent but also read other articles from HAL that said All rooms had been upgraded with fridges and TV.  Didn't really believe them.

    Getting anxious!

  5. Can anyone tell me if 3367 has a fridge?  Also, would like to know what the obstruction is.  Is there a cabin 3365?  And, does it have the old style TV?

We will be on her in a week or so so will answer my own question then.  So much conflicting information on different deck plans.  We have cruised on eight cruise lines  and over 50 cruises and have never had so much conflicting information.  It's not only the website but emails, phone calls, etc.  And, we received our luggage direct tags and FedEx info last  Friday.  Our bags were shipped last Wednesday.  And, they have arrived in Ft. Lauderdale but whether we see them again is anyone's guess.

Sorry for the rant but I'm wondering what else will happen.  I am not trusting anything and am bringing my 4 inch stack of paperwork with me just in case they actually do have us traveling to Melbourne instead of South America.

  6. I believe that HAL has some staff who does not have a clue which cabin category some cabins are marked on their deck plans.  When we booked our cabin showed as HH on the deck plan and had a cabin or white space next to our cabin with no cabin number.  When we received our booking confirmation it showed H.  Then another time it showed on our booking HH again.  Now it's back to H.

And, one deck plan shows the empty area does have a cabin number.  Another plan does not.

And, on top of this, our booking number changed within two days of confirmation.

The finale to this comment is that a few weeks ago we received an email telling us that our shore excursion in Melbourne was wait listed.  We are not going to Australia.  I was told, when I called and explained the situation, that our excursion was not wait listed but was, in fact, booked.  It took three tries to get them to understand the situation.

Oh, and, they sent three pieces of information with two different cabin numbers.

I am hoping our 77 day voyage doesn't have any more mixups.

  7. It's actually the Captain's Club monthly news.  I am tablet/computer challenged so I would be happy to post a link but have no idea how.  I will see if I can get a friend to help tomorrow.

It tells where some ships will be traveling next year, new port calls, info on the 3 drink HH coupons although I'm not sure if it going on trial on Edge or fleetwide.

    • Thanks 1
  8. Best to try a different cruise line or ship. We are mid 70's and were on the Veendam a couple months ago.

Unless you like to listen to music all night or enjoy half an hour of Trivia at 9 p.m. every night there was hardly anything else to do except drink and go the casino.

The early show in the theater was always crowded but the later show was nearly empty depending on the entertainment which was kind of so-so. And, if you get there late you may be sitting in an area where you can only see the lower part of the stage.

There are no comedy clubs, B. B. King clubs, etc.

We usually went to the early show followed by Happy Hour in the Crow's Nest and then called it a night.

A couple years ago we went to Cuba on the Celestyal Crystal which went round trip from Montego Bay. We overnighted in Havana and stopped at three other cities in Cuba. The ship also didn't have much nightlife but the People to People talks each day were wonderful. Would do that again in a minute.

  9. We drive to Florida from Lafayette, Indiana taking I65 to Montgomery, Alabama, 231 through Dothan, Alabama to I10 to I75 to wherever we are going in Florida. We usually go to Bradenton and it takes two days.

We like to avoid Atlanta if at all possible. Sometimes we get to Birmingham during rush hour but it's a lot better than Atlanta.

Two of us take turns driving and we stop about every two or so hours.

    Safe travels.

  10. We have booked a Veranda Spa stateroom on the Veendam. The website indicates special spa treatments are included (at least that was the way I read it). Exactly what does this entail?

I asked two cruise agents to find out for me and neither came up with an answer.

  11. Several years ago I discovered Douwe Egbert decaf coffee on a river cruise down the Danube and have been obsessed with it ever since. Only once have I seen it for purchase in the U. S..

Where would be a good place to look for it in Europe? This will be my bestest souvenir ever if I could find a supply to bring home.

  12. We will be traveling in Europe for about three weeks but away from home longer than that prior to our June TA on QM2. How long prior to sailing are the edocs available for printing and how many pages are included?

This is our first Cunard sailing so are not familiar with the procedures.

    Thanks.

  13. I agree but what you are really doing is enjoying the "experience".

We are celebrating our 50th wedding anniversary on May 20 but will be traveling to Southampton for the second of our three cruises so will be having Afternoon Tea in London on the 19th. Place not determined yet.
