Its sad to hear about the Pacific Pearl leaving P&O :(
We have done 4 cruise on Pacific Pearl.
When she arrived in Auckland I was lucky enough to be able to do a tour of her before she was christened in Auckland :D. and it was cool that P&O did their first naming in Auckland!.
Hopefully one day P&O will do that again!.
Now to see if we can do another cruise on the Pacific Pearl before she leaves! (Would l o v e to do her last cruise!).
We felt the same way when she was Ocean Village and left for southern climes in 2010. I'm glad you have enjoyed sailing on her, now we're looking forward to sailing on her again! A reversal of your loss our gain! :)

I know it's hard but try not to shed any tiers over it. :)

First time I went to the USA 1967 rate was 2,80 to the pound , then Harold Wilson devalued the pound went to 2,40 , and dropping eversince, although I can remember went stateside once when the rate was 1.06 to the pound almost par.
oooo - stateside! Is that opposed to Scotside, jockside or clydeside? :)

Dinner jacket or "DJ" in slang is the British term for tuxedo or "tux".
The US tuxedo (from Tuxedo Park) evolved from the UK dinner jacket.
The following link describes how they came about. Quite interesting.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tuxedo
Just substitute the words British for English and UK for England. The author doesn't appear to appreciate the difference.

Formal nights- For men, it seems most wear dress slacks, dress shirt, tie and jacket of some type. Some report going without tie, and some without jacket.
What on earth are dress slacks? Slacks are slacks, there's nothing at all "dress" about them. Wear them with a tuxedo jacket perhaps?

Docked overnight in Funchal Madeira onboard the Britannia a few weeks ago(Sept 15), you can walk in but its quite a long way , but plenty of shuttle buses
Its a stroll! See above. A mile/20 minutes to the promenade/sea front at most. The town is just behind.

Although I did not care for the English food at the Wheelhouse Bar, a lot of people did and it was always full.
Do you really mean English or do you mean British? There is a difference...

We're on this cruise.
There is a Roll Call for this cruise a431a with lots of useful info, sharing of trips, meet and greet details, etc at:

See you over there!

I love Fort Perch Rock. I once won a gold award from a national photographic organisation for an image that I took of it.
There's a live webcam from Fort Perch Rock at:
http://www.wirralcam.org/newbrighton.shtml
with views of New Brighton. Lots of nice Liverpool webcams also on that site via the menu.
Keep up the good work Tom!

Hi Stuart. Nice to meet you and Sue this morning. The golf went well and the weather was kind to us. More importantly, England took the spoils in this mini Ryder Cup and a nice crisp 5 dollar bill now resides in my pocket!!:D
Hope to bump into you again sometime, and I also hope you enjoyed the rest of your day in 'The Pool.' T:)
Mutual!
Well done on your mini Ryder Cup win!

We liked going to Wal Mart. It's always neat going to a store like Wal Mart in another country. Of course I went to buy the inexpensive liquor. Plus I used to work at Wal Mart so I had another reason to look at it.
Exactly!
It's that strange sense of familiarity in a foreign place.
Like a security blanket. "EEk, I'm in a very strange foreign place but I relate to where I'm standing right now!"
And, if you're lucky...
"...wow, how cheap is that compared to what I pay at home?"! "I'll buy a couple!"
Polish people come to live in the UK and buy from our Tesco supermarket which is also big over there, so the company stock Polish brands for them in the UK.
Two good German discounters are doing very well in the UK, Lidl and Aldi.
When I go to see my daughter in southern Germany, same feeling, different environment. Lots of familiar comparisons and currency conversion calculations. Strange.
Perhaps one of our readers is a Psychology or Economics graduate who could relate to this and research it?
'Aint cruisin' great? :)

I too will be around the Pier Head waiting for the ship at 7am, as we want to get off to golf as soon as the ship allows the pax to diisembark. Maybe I'll see you. :)
Red 09 BMW - lets hope the weather holds!!

Well I know nothing about Scotland, but here in my country of England it was the wettest July since 1888.Yes, eighteen eighty eight!!
However, June was lovely, with high temperatures and lots of sun. The problem is that our weather is so very changeable. The last few days have been dry and warm. However, our idea of warm is anything mid 60's and above.
You will NOT need any heavy coats or pullovers here. Thin layers that you can peel on and off are best, with a thin waterproof coat. That will be adequate. I am playing golf next week with somebody off the Aug 12th sailing and I'm hoping for good weather. Just don't expect too much and be prepared for anything. We're used to it.
Enjoy your cruise and especially your time in England and very especially your day in 'The Pool.' T:)
My thanks too for all the info you've put out recently. You're a great ambassador for the 'Pool. Liverpool is a great city coming into it's own again, and a great cruise destination.
I'm a Mancunian and never thought I'd hear myself saying stuff like this (must go and lie down in a darkened room for a bit..)!!
We'll be travelling up from Staffordshire for 0700 next Sunday 16th Aug to see Crown Princess sail in and will spend the day in the city.
Hope to be sailing in to L'pool c/o Princess before too long.

My first cruise was on SS Uganda. We sailed from Liverpool and called at Ceuta, Malta, Corfu, Istanbul and Dubrovnik.
It was 1973 I think - George Macrae Rock You Baby was in the charts.
It was memorable because I was seasick within hours of sailing (no change there - I've sailed numerous times since and still get seasick).
Also, I experienced my very first kiss on deck, under the stars, somewhere near the Dardanelles I think.
Happy days
Nobody's ever kissed me near the Dardanelles, or even on the Dardanelles! I feel like I have lost out now! How I envy your mis-spent youth!! ;);)
ANy knowledge of Captain Dariusz Janusz Balana?
in P&O Cruises ( UK )
Posted
I got to know him on Ocean Village 1 in 2009 and 2010 where he was Staff Captain. He went to P&O Australia with the ship when she transferred to P&O Australia fleet as Pacific Pearl. He is an affable and approachable chap and it was a pleasure to know him. Princess gain, P&O loss.
