  1. It's simple physics. If you carve out some space for a select group of people, something has to be taken away from the others. Both Solstice and Edge classes are very similar in size. Let's say there are 100,000 square feet of recreational space on both ships (this is a guess for the purpose of example). On Solstice, that 100,000 square feet is available to all. On Edge, however, some of that space, perhaps 10,000 square feet, is reserved for suite guests. That means there would only be 90,000 square feet available to all. Isn't that taking some space away from the non-suite passengers?

I don't know about you, but I learned in science and math classes that when you take something away from the whole for any reason, there is less of it remaining as a result. A good example is the Sky Observation Lounge on the first four Solstice class ships compared to what is on the fifth ship. On Reflection, about 30% of that lounge space was carved out for additional suites that are not on the first four ships. THAT means the non-suite passengers have less lounge space because it have been turned into suite space. More for suite guests, less for non-suite guests. On Edge, they took that concept even further and carved out large areas of two decks, not just a corner of a lounge.

This logic makes no sense. It's a new class of ship so comparing it to the S class ships doesn't really do much good. There are many other things they could have put in that place that would have resulted in passengers having less public space, including more suites - the top three levels of suites take up almost 15000 sq ft on the Edge, are you saying those should be removed as well so there is more public space?

  2. Me too husband: Omg did you see Sue's outfit tonight? It is sooo cute! Husband: Sue who? Me: you know! Sue and Doug! Husband: huh?

A long time later... Hey there's an update on the cruise critic thread! I got all excited only to realize it wasn't an actual Doug outr Sue update. Can't wait to read more.

Thank you so much for posting this week Doug, we are loving all the updates and can't wait for our turn next month! I am with many others that are ready to book Maya Chan after today. It looks so fun!

  3. We were just on the Reflection and the future cruise documentation made it sound like it would be out at the end of November. They gave us the option to put a deposit down for the 18-19 cruises and book when they come out in November to get the on board perks.

  4. We booked a Jan 2018 cruise 10 night on the Reflection for January 2018 and we booked it here on board Silhouette two days ago. Our perks were both the drink package and a $300 OBC. The cost of booking this was $200 since it was Aqua and a 10 day cruise and we elected to have the additional $200 "On Board booking credit" applied to the Jan. 2018 cruise so we will have a total $500 to spend aboard on that cruise. (Basically you pay this $200 immediately and you can apply the $200 to the current cruise or the future date cruise: we chose the latter.)

If we booked this today while onboard the Silhouette that we are currently on our perks would be the drinks package and then the $200 "On board booking credit" so we would have a total of $200 rather than the $500 we got by booking prior to November 1 (today).

This is the difference that took place 11/1/16 but it only affects people on board the ship. I have no idea what/if the changes might be if not booking on board.

Because of the two types of future OBC's this can be confusing if you have not done it previously while on board.

If you are able, is there any way you can Post a picture of the current obc offer that is broken out by length/cabin while booking on board? I'm trying to do some math to decide which cruise I want to book when I board next week and must be looking at an old grid because I show 10 nights in aqua would get 300. I was looking at the same cruise in concierge class so now I'm thinking I need to update some numbers or wait and do my deciding on board after I see what is offered.

  5. If you haven't read the fantastic Silhouette review by Bimmer09 yet, be sure and check it out. It's such a thorough review and it does include some great Alcove info in it ( :):

This is a great review, I've already spent a few hours reading it and it's getting me even more excited for my next trip.

For anyone looking for only the Alcove information, it starts with post 736 - my browser shows it is on page 37 of the review.

  6. I would love to hear your thoughts (and see pictures if you take any) on the new menu items in Tuscan. I haven't been able to find much information by searching and am guessing the change was fairly recent.

One other quick question as I'm reading your old reviews, how are you liking the cookbook? Have you made a lot of the recipes?

  7. Talked to Maarten the CD last night.

The production shows should be the same as this cruise. The first one was last night called Broken Strings. I enjoyed it. They have 6 vocalists and 8 dancers. I liked the songs as they were versions of pretty recent dance/clubby music (eg Timber by Pitbull ft Kesha) and other recognizable songs.

The singers and dancers apparently boarded the ship the same day we embarked in Rome so they delayed the first production show until day 5, likely so they could rehearse.

The acts instead were a Motown act called Queens of Rythm and a singer Andrea Dickensen (sp?). They were excellent. Unfortunately, they are departing the ship mid cruise. We missed the violinist during the evening we overnighted in Athens.

Life jackets are in the cabin under the bed. Did not have to bring them to muster.

(Sorry for any spelling or grammar issues. Typing this on my phone in front of the windmills in mykonos and it's really windy!)

Did Maarten say how long he'd be on the Reflection? We will be sailing in November and am curious of he'll still be the cd. We sailed with him earlier in the year right before his promotion.

  8. I can't stop laughing... awesome

Even if you have never or never intend to cruise Carnival you should still follow John Heald on FB... he posts some "awesome" questions that he receives from actual cruisers. Some of them I can't help but wonder if they are real. But still funny none-the-less

I love his posts. He always finds something amusing to share. I spend way to much time every day reading the comments, it's fun to see how drastically people's opinions can differ.

  9. Wow. I thought you were being clever and made up the question and answer to be humorous. I just read the column and laughed out loud. I can't believe that bothers someone. We've stopped dressing formal but enjoy having the option if we want and it's always fun to see everyone who does dress up.

  10. I know the Pearl will be in Seattle on October 1, 2017 and in New Orleans on November 5, 2017, but where will in be in between?

It's being chartered Nov 1-5 for the Impractical Jokers cruise. I think it was just announced yesterday and they are taking pre-booking requests now. I think booking opens in a couple of weeks.

  11. My flight was also cancelled and was unable to get to Miami today for this afternoons embark onto NCL Sky. Have spoken to NCL several times over the last two days and being treated as if this Hurricane is no big deal and making the ship is not a problem for others. I find that hard to believe. Florida is in a state of emergency, NCL is unable to tell me what the new itinerary is for this weekend sailing (obviously not going to Bahamas), thought yesterday that I might be able to get to the first port of call for Saturday but zero information from NCL. On the phone this morning with NCL and was told that the ship was in port and going through disembarkation. As of 11:30am the ship is still not docked. Obviously I did not pay for insurance and am a bit perturbed that I cannot receive a credit or refund.

If you paid for your trip with a credit card, you may want to check to see if you card happens to have trip insurance included. Some people have this and don't realize it. Obviously, you'd have to read the fine print, and you may not be eligible, but I just wanted to mention it in case you weren't aware.

  12. How do you know which alcove is yours, do they assign them and let you know or is the location determined once you get there?

Other than the fruit plate, can you have other food delivered there? Possibly from the room service menu?

How is the drink service there, do you have to call someone when you are ready for a refill or do they generally loop through on occasion?

I'm trying to think through what the day would be like. Thanks!

  13. Are there specific drinks you are wondering about? I've sailed Celebrity a few times and I can't remember a time where a drink I wanted wasn't included. Here are a couple of threads to read through that talk about the classic drink package. There are lots more if you do a search on the Celebrity board.
