This isn't the Caribbean.  🙂   And this is a late sailing, with a lot of people traveling multiple hours,  touring all day,  or in the dining room.    Princess is the only line at Whittier.    There is never going to be much of any sail away.

You may get more, sail away,  sailing out of Seattle and Vancouver.

Thanks for your response.  We were just so excited to go on this cruise that we planned for two years so we high tailed it up to the top deck at sailaway and wah wah it was dead!! LOL

  2. We were on the Coral last Junes sailing out of Whittier and were extremely disappointed there was not a sail away party.  There was only about 30 people on deck and no horn was sounded.  Is this not a thing when you sail out of Alaska or is it just Princess that does not have a sail away party?

This was our first time on Princess and sailing on a non-caribbean cruise which always has parties.

Looking at your itinerary, seems to me that you spent most of your time hanging around (Anchorage) and going to places that are not worth visiting (Talkeetna - have never been able to figure out what people see in that place).  The only day that you spent in an interesting place was day 4.  Even there you had to take the short cruise because you drove from Anchorage to Seward on the day of the tour.  Very badly planned in my opinion.

    DON

We had to play it safe as I had back surgery and was wearing a back brace so I think I planned it as best I could.

  4. We did a DYI before our Princess cruise last summer.  We flew into Anchorage and arrived at 7 pm, ate dinner and went to the hotel and crashed.

Day 2 we called an Uber to take us to Avis downtown to pick up our rental car.  We spent a full day in Anchorage going thru the shops downtown and taking a trolley tour which we caught outside of the Visitors Center.

Day 3 we drove up to Talkeetna and the views were beautiful.  It was a long drive and I don't know what all the hype is about therefore, this would be the one thing we did I would not do again.  Others might enjoy this tiny town but us not so much.

Day 4 we got up and left our hotel at 5 am to drive to Seward for our tour with Major Marines which we had to be there around 10 am.  I wanted to have time to stop and pull over for photo ops and it was perfect timing, this is the most gorgeous landscape I have ever seen in my life!  After the tour was over we drove to Girdwood and stayed at the Alyeska Ski Resort and it was beautiful.

Day 5 we drove into Anchorage and just hung out and had lunch at Moose Tooth Pizza (yum) and turned in our rental car.  On our last morning before the cruise we called Uber to take us to the train station and we took the train into Whittier.  It was an awesome ride and we were one of the first ones on the ship.  I hope my little story has help a bit and enjoy your cruise, we can't wait to go back!!

  5. We have always stayed in Webster or League City the night before as the quality hotels are much cheaper than in Galveston. We also park at Lighthouse parking because it is monitored as opposed to leaving our car in a hotel lot. Heard too many stories of cars vandalized at hotel lots.

Do not chance driving in the same day. My coworker left DFW at 6 am on a Sunday for Galveston and was stuck on a shut down 45 in Houston and missed her cruise.

  6. 6/16 – Skagway (overcast) - Dyea Dave Tour to Yukon and return train from Fraser. Dave has been ill and hasn’t been doing tours for a while. Rose was new and super nice however, inexperienced. (This did not hinder our tour, just making an observation) We stopped at both signs for pictures, along with Bridal Falls, Bennet Lake, Sled dog puppies, Emerald Lake, Carcross Desert and Carcross town. We ate at the Bistro. Very good soup and tostado lunch. While lunching the whole town lost power. Unless you had CAD cash, you couldn’t buy anything. Sad, as I’m sure the merchants depend on the tourists.

LOL, we were there that day too and had to use the "outhouse facilities"! I guess when they lose power their toilets do not work.

  7. How do I check how many ships will be in port with us and what dock we will be in?

We are sailing on the Coral on June 13th on our first Alaska cruise!

  8. We are doing the same itinerary you are. We are planning on leaving our hotel in Anchorage at 5:30 am so we can enjoy the drive to Seward and make any stops we want for site seeing and photos. Major Marines requires you check in an hour earlier than your excursion.

  9. We were flying home from vacation in Las Vegas and our flight had to turn around because of problems. Had to get of the plane, rebook another flight home and of course there was not a direct one and we had a layover in California to get to DFW.

As we boarded the plane in CA we hear "I thought you where going to Las Vegas?". It was my husband's boss that had been in CA for a conference. At least we were legitimately on vacation or that would have been awkward!

  10. I found info on the walk to the pier as well. Out the back door and a quick walk. I was hoping for impressions about the rooms from CC respondents. I just went ahead and booked.

We are also booked at this hotel for June 2018. I have been reviewing numerous hotels in Vancouver for almost 6 months and the only negative I have seen on the Auberge is their breakfast area is tiny and crowded.
