  1. I'm with some other friends and we are going to decide what to do on the ship so I'm wondering if Uvas fills up and then doesn't allow more people in. My other question is do they have a full menu and how are the prices for food and drink if you don't do the all inclusive? Not sure if our group wants to be limited to the chicken Fajitas.

According to my confirmation from last year:

    • Chicken or beef fajitas or fish filet plate per adult. One club sandwich or hamburger per child
    • Open bar (domestic coke, sprite, juice, water bottle, beer, rum, tequila margaritas, daiquiris etc)

  2. Would my 5 year old enjoy Playa Uvas? I know my DH and DS13 will love the snorkeling. Is the water warm enough to wade around in? How deep is the pool? Thank you for any help you can give this first timer.

My personal opinion? I wouldn't bring a 5 year old there. The shoreline is very rocky. There is nothing to play with, nothing for a kid to do. It's very quiet and low-key. The pool is not central to the activity, the water in the pool was soooo cold (the beach water was nice and warm). The pool seems like an afterthought.

I loooove Uvas and recommend it very highly but not for someone that age.

  3. We will be traveling to Cozumel in November and we are trying to decide between the beaches of Playa Mia and Playa Uvas. Any recommendations are greatly appreciated.

Sorry, I've never been to Playa Mia, but here are my thoughts on Playa Uvas. Dh and I went there last April. We got there early and were able to pick whatever chairs we wanted. It's pretty small:

It's so beautiful. The shore is really rocky. It's not easy to get in and out of the water. But the rocky shore leads to some pretty good shore snorkeling.

We signed up for the package which included a kayak tour and a snorkel tour. The tours were both enjoyable, and I think it was the best shore snorkeling you can get in Coz.

For lunch I remember we had nachos and fajitas, and they were good. Nothing spectacular, but certainly good. As for drinks, they were refilling our drinks all day. At one point, I realized I was completely buzzed and asked my waiter to switch me to water. So, be careful with the drinks!!!

We were very very pleased with Uvas and would recommend it to anyone. We'll be back in Coz in a few weeks, and we're going to try somewhere else this time, but only because we don't think we should do the exact same thing we did last year. It was really hard for us to not just book Uvas again because the experience was really wonderful.

  4. I'm online right now updating my cruise review, and just saddened again that we didn't get to stop in Progreso. We were unable to get through the channel due to high winds, so we ended up going to Key West instead. I was really looking forward to relaxing at a beachside bar in Progreso and buying a hammock. Oh well, next time... :(

  5. DH and I went to Uvas in early April. We had a very good time and would definitely go back. We weren't greeted by name or anything like I always hear about, but Uvas had our reservation all set and we just paid, got our wristband, and went in. We were a little bit annoyed, because a group had just left to go kayaking, so we had to wait for another guide who wouldn't be there for another hour. The good news was, there were only 4 other people on our kayak tour, and two of those four didn't join us for snorkeling. So it was very close to a private tour, which was awesome. I wasn't very impressed by the snorkeling -- there just wasn't a lot to see except schools of fish. No rays, no turtles, no really unusual looking fish. My husband really liked it though. We used disposable waterproof cameras to take pics, but the quality is terrible.

As far as Uvas itself, it was great. The beach chairs were comfy, and there were plenty of umbrellas. The food was DELICIOUS. We had the fajita lunch that came with our package, and it was just unbelievably good. We devoured every morsel in record time. On the negative side, I agree with a previous poster who said the flies were very annoying. They were flying all over our food and doing kamikaze nose dives at my face.

After the kayak tour and the snorkel tour, we dried off and had our lunch, then relaxed on the beach until the very last minute when we had to get back to the cruise ship. I felt like I could have laid there for the rest of my life. Our waiter brought us margaritas and waters, and I hope I never forget the brilliant blue color of that water for the rest of my life. It was truly paradise.

Here are a few photos of Playa Uvas:

  6. You know, part of why I anticipate that I will enjoy Progreso is planning ahead on these boards. If my ports of call changed and I were dropped off in a small town that I'd never heard of, had no clue what to do there, etc., I can see that the experience would be pretty grim. ESPECIALLY if I were really excited about my original port. I'll have to keep this in mind on my cruise, if the ports get changed, to try my best to see the positive in wherever we keep going. See, I'd be disappointed to go somewhere really flashy and nice, like Grand Cayman, but were that to happen, I'll just try to remember that the only one who can make it a positive experience is ME.

  7. has anyone taken the mayan ruins excursion out of Progresso Mexico? first timer leaving out of Galveston on June 13th thanks

A lot of people on the Progreso board under Ports of Call recommend Autoprogreso. http://www.autoprogreso.com/trips.html.htm

My understanding is that you just find them when you get off the ship, and you book it then. I don't think they book ahead of time, but you can contact them to find out.

You should check out the Progreso board under Ports of Call for better information.

  8. I just booked Playa Uvas, the all inclusive kayak/snorkel day, for April. There will be 4 cruise ships in Coz that day, so I'm a bit concerned because I have read that Uvas can get pretty crowded. But we really want some good snorkeling, and the reviews here are so positive, that we decided on Uvas anyway. I am so excited!!!
