Here is the latest schedule from Ultramar which I think is now the only company serving the route.

To me the issue is that the time in Playa will be limited in order to catch a ferry back.  Maybe the service levels will be increased by the time you want to go.  I did see on the splash page that the ferry is only operating on odd dates for November.  Quite strange as this is the main link to the mainland.

Maybe that's it.  Although the violence wasn't directed at tourists and happened at night.  It's not clear what the OP's tour was that got cancelled.  Was it on the mainland?

Yes, I did state that the tour was on the mainland, going to a cenote. All the cenotes are on the mainland. Oh well. Lots of other things to choose from.

Yikes! Thank you for posting this. My research about safety in the area gave me 3 blog-type articles saying it was very safe, but they were older. This one did not show up. I have now decided to cancel our plans and choose a different activity on Cozumel.

I have never done it, I have always stayed in Cozumel.  I wonder why the cruise line canceled the tour.  Is it due to covid reasons, or because of the increasing violence in that area?  If you could find a private tour to meet you at the ship and take you over that might be the easiest.  I am sorry I don't have any information to help you, I am just really curious why it was canceled.

In answer to this question, a rep for the cruise line answered my email inquiry saying that "because of protocols" they were not doing any excursions to the mainland, but other excursions very similar to ours, and on the mainland, still show up as available to purchase, just not the one we had booked which was then canceled. I am not sure if it is covid related, ferry issues, or the concern for safety. Doesn't matter at this point, we're sticking close to the ship.

Again, thanks to everyone for all the information, it has really helped.

  3. Our cruise line canceled our shore excursion in Cozumel, which is actually on the mainland. We booked through the cruise line so we wouldn't have to deal with the ferry and taxi on our own but we really want to do this tour. Anyone have experience going over and back on the ferry and using a taxi in Playa del Carmen? Sounds easy enough but I am a nervous nilly. Thanks for any and all advice.

  4. I booked right on their website. They have several package options. We did the Big 3, so we did all 4 activities. You can also book your transfers on their website but you have to go and come back at specific times and I did not want to do that. We could go there at either 9:30 or 10:30, and return at 1:30 or 2:30. There were 6 ships in port the day we were there so I knew it would get crowded. We docked at 8am and I knew they opened at 9 so we got off ASAP and went straight to the taxi stand in front of the port area. The taxi fare is a set price, $7 per person each way, and that was the same cost as the website transfers. Rainforest Adventures is about a 10-15 minute ride so we arrived before they opened. There were only a few people there when we arrived and they hadn't opened yet. We only waited a few minutes and because I had the tickets already they took us first in line so we were first up on the chairlift and on the tube ride, and that was right around 9. We then did the ziplines and were the first there also. Some people only do the Flying Dutchman so we were group 3 down the mountain, and that was after enjoying the view and taking tons of pictures. The view alone is worth the ride up the mountain. We were done by 10:30! By that time there were people there from 3 cruise ships and some only went up and down for the view so they were also done but had to wait over 2 hours for their return shuttle time! We thought it was fantastic and our plan worked perfectly, to get in and done before the heat and crowds. We still had almost a full day left because we didn't leave until 5pm. They have a facebook page and respond to messages very quickly and their times are shown there. There are some discount offers on their website. Also, on their website click on the cruise heading. If you don't do the Flying Dutchman they give Royal C discounts on the other rides. But do the Flying Dutchman, it's so worth it. Hope this helps. Happy to answer any questions. Have fun
