  1. Hi, I'm a single senior who loves to cruise and I didn't know about this group. I use a rollator to get around due to a bleed in my spinal cord in 2009.

The first TA after my husband's death was both difficult and wonderful. I discovered I could cruise on my own, make friends (both couples and singles) and have a blast. I encourage everyone to get up the courage and discover that life doesn't stop with the death of a spouse.

Leaving August 19 on the RCCL Brilliance of the Sea for a Baltic Cruise and then taking the same ship back to Boston. Will be my first back to back. Anyone else going?

Then on April 18, 2015 I'm sailing from Houston to Seattle through the Panama Canal.

    Join me!

  2. Quoting JRose, "Traveling alone makes others more open to you, so it's actually easier to be social than it would be if you had a friend with you".

When you force yourself to take the plunge and get on the ship (congratulating yourself on your bravery), you also open yourself up to meeting new people and being more social than if you had a friend with you. When I travel now I'm much more aware of the people around me than I used to be. And, I like that.

We're all waiting to hear when and where you're going!!!

  3. Hi Janine,

My suggestion is that you call Carnival or your travel agent and arrange transfers before you start the cruise. That way, you just "show up" and get taken to the ship. Same with coming home. Let them know what time your flight leaves (say at 10 a.m. instead of 10:30, and they'll tell you when you need to get off.

Make it easy and I can't wait to hear how much you enjoy the cruise.

    YOU GO Girl!!!!

  4. Great post:D....I have also met many couples/families over the years

and am friends with them to this day:)...actually I never go on my

cruises "searching for other solo cruisers"....it is just not important

    to me.

I agree with you re not seeking "solo" cruisers. I started solo cruising after my husband passed away in August of 2012. I decided to do a TA with a balcony. I imagined myself sitting on my balcony, reading and looking at the water to recover after my loss. (I use a rollator because of a spinal cord bleed).

I had such a good time and met such wonderful people (singles and couples) that I didn't finish all the books I had downloaded on my kindle, joined a pop choir, took spanish lessons and participated in a book group.

I had late dinner seating and requested a large table so I

    could meet people.

I really appreciated travelling alone and doing what I wanted to do when I wanted to do it without coordinating with others.

Cruise Critic roll call was a wonderful tool to set up excursions and meeting places.

For the first time solo cruiser my advice is to keep smiling. People will smile back. (one of the little experiments I did that first cruise).

My next cruise will TA from Harwich to Boston on August 30th. Can't wait!

  5. Would anyone have a reference for me to contact as I would love to cruise and can't persuade my children to go with me and I am recently widowed. Are there any cruises that have a guide or someone in charge that would look out for someone alone also would arrange a suitable cabin mate to share a room. I have looked online with no luck and trust that someone on this site could steer me to the right direction to a travel site in a sincere and trustworthy manner. Thank you.

To celebrate my 75th birthday, I took my first "solo" TA last April after my husband died in August. I use a walker due to a bleed into my spinal cord 4 years ago. This trip was a "see if you can do it" challenge to myself. My plan was to get my own cabin with a balcony, load up my kindle and sit on the balcony and read.

Turned out that there were so many things to enjoy on sea days that I didn't spend much time reading. Everyone on the ship was kind and helpful. The cabin steward watched over me like a hawk -- making sure that I didn't need anything. The table had 3 other singles and a couple with an adult daughter. They were great and we got along just fine.

In other words, traveling solo was wonderful. I made friends at every program I participated in -- and we still keep in touch.

I am going on another TA in December and can't wait.

I hope you get up your nerve and just do it. Just remember to smile all the time and participate in activities. I can almost guarantee you will have fun.

  6. Hi, I have been a rollator user for the last 4 years. Took a TA in April for the first time as a solo traveler and had a marvelous time! People were great, helpful and fun. Looking forward to my next TA on Celebrity, December 1 from Rome to Ft. Lauderdale.

Looking forward to hearing from others.
