  1. The government researcher who did the study on salt admitted on the TV show 20/20 that he cooked the books and made salt come out bad in his study. He probably admitted it because in 1996 a huge study on salt was published in the New England journal of Medicine. The last line of that study said "Unless you are a black male with a very rare form of high blood pressure, salt has no affect on high blood pressure. If you research the subject on the INTERNET you may find the heading on the latest Parliament from the Government Health Department in England making fun of the Americans crazy actions on salt. I personally counted 30 different studies saying salt was fine for you. Most doctors are just too busy to read up on all the newest subjects.:):)

  2. As a type II for the last 17 years I have done a lot of reading and studying on the subject. The book Protein Power by two heart doctors really opened my eyes on which foods were good or bad. If you eat fat your blood sugar goes up 0%, if you eat protein it goes up 50% and if you eat starchy carbs it goes up 350%. Noticed starchy carbs like potatoes not vegetable greens etc. You should read up on Glycemic ratings and the newer Glycemic index. If you allow your blood sugar to get high not enough oxygen is in the blood and small capilaries die off. Eventualy you lose feeling in your extremities. The single worst normal food that you can eat is mashed potatoes which will begin to raise you blood sugar level in minutes where meat may take hours to affect your blood sugar.:):)

  3. Stiffiny you don't need to eat breakfast if you ate protein for supper the night before. Protein doesn't digest quickly like carbs do and you shouldn't be hungry the next morning. I have a cup of coffee wiht light cream. Yes there is 300 calories in the cream, but that's a lot less than most breakfasts you might eat. It takes 3 or so days to get into Keytosis where your body is creating Keytones that will break down fat and start you losing weight. I just posted a long thread about how I stay the same or lose weight when I cruise by staying out of the buffet and eating in the dining room. Holland and Cunnards dining room food is served at an amount the it doesn't cause you to overeat. On my last cruise we had a couple that were both in the upper 200's range and they seemed to be satisfied with the dinner portions although they ate everything on their plates where I only ate the meats etc.:)

  4. We are leaving this week on the Eurodam (Holland America) because the food was disgusting on the NCL Jewel last fall. The QMII food was 1st class in quality and service. All 5 of Hollands ships have had excellent food and very good service. Our only NCL was a back to back with food so bad that after the 4th night we couldn't eat in the main dinning room any more. Beef cooked well done as if we were some farmer without electricity who hasn't the faintest idea on how to cook beef. A hamburger in their 24 hour restaurant cooked so well done it was actualy black on the bottom and so hard I could have pounded a tack in with it. I realize that food is subjective, we all thick our local pizza place makes the best pizza, because that is what we are used to. Upon growing up I opened up my experiences in eating food and forced myself to eat foods that I had previously disliked. I hated my first salad with blue cheese dressing, the 2nd week it wasn't so bad, by the 3rd week I realized I really like blue cheese dressing. Same thing happened with a lot more foods except I still can't bring myself to eat aspargras. In a Paris restaurant I reminded the waitress that I wanted my steak medium rare, that's pink in the middle. She huffed up and said "Sir we are not Germans, if you ordered it well done we would have thrown you out of the restaurant.":)

  5. As a type II diabetic I have researched Atkins etc. and Glycemic Index and Glycemic Rating. I did my first Atkins in the 60's at the same time my future wife was doing the Air Force diet. Both diets seem the same. Lately my carbs got out of control and my blood sugar was running too high so I started on long lasting insulin along with my pills, I still wasn't a good boy and I had to go on Regular insulin along with the long lasting insuling. When that happened I started gaining a pound a week.
Most people don't know that when you eat fat your blood sugar does not raise up at all, when you eat protein it rises by 50% and when you eat complex carbs it rises by 350%. When your blood sugar rises your Pancreas creates insulin to lower the blood sugar level. Insulins other job is to create cholesterol. So you see the problem here, eating complex carbs makes your body create a lot of extra cholesterol and when your body has used enough cholesterol to build new tissue/bones etc it has to do something with all that extra cholesterol and what it does IS STORE IT AS FAT. You don't get fat by eating FAT you get fat by eating complex carbs.
I lose a pound on each cruise by eating bacon and scrambled eggs for breakfast, some fish or meat in the dining room at lunch and by eating part of an apertizer at diner and just the fish or meat at the main course.
My wife says no one would gain any weight if they just eat the portions served at lunch and dinner.:)
  6. We sailed on a Noro virus cruise on Holland to Mexico on 11/07 where 1/2 or most of the crew was down sick. when we changed to a chocolate martini from our margareta, it came with salt on the rim. Yucky.
