Sailed on her in January 1997 in her first season in Caribbean.  My second cruise and first on HAL.  Fell in love with HAL on that cruise.  We tried others but always came back.

I'd like to know about this too. We've always talked about walking down there and watching the Saturday sailings.

The Veendam was my first HAL cruise ship, and I will always have a fondness for her.:) But she was also much younger and in better shape in those days...... as was I.:D

Ours was seven day cruise on American Hawaii's ss Independance in January 1997. Definitely was the way to see the islands but our cruise on the ms Veendam 11 months later is what got us hooked. While we have strayed from the line a few times, HAL is what hooked us and keeps us coming back.:)

Now that I think about it I believe we would have been mighty disappointed with the Independance had we cruised on HAL first. Very interesting to cruise on a classic ocean liner but the American crew paled in comparison to HAL staff. And naturally the ameneties on a 50's liner were much less than what you find on a modern ship.

When we went for our stroll this morning, Elizabeth, the cutest assistant cruise director, was handing out the Dam Dollars for the one mile walk. She laughed when Bill reached for the whole stack instead of the two bills! Just kidding..........
