Thanks Pensioncruiser.

I am just wondering if there is any benefit in booking the ships excursions before you join the ship, apart from the obvious one that it may be sold out when you come to book it onboard. I think I may have read somewhere that it is cheaper to pre-book but I’m not sure if I have dreamt that. Thanks.

Found the info on the Navigate app and you are correct that you do download it once you are onboard.

Thanks Pensioncruiser. Really looking forward to our cruise and stay. We last cruised 2 years ago on The Spirit and to be fair the white and rose wine were both ok. Different ship I know but I live in hope 😀

Pensioncruiser can I ask you what app do you use for booking the restaurants? Can I download that before my cruise? Thanks. Sorry if I’ve missed that on another thread.

I’m also on the Dream in 3 weeks and the only drink I am worried about, is the white wine. Some reviews say that the wine in the normal AI isn’t that good so I am wondering about upgrading but wonder if you can just buy a glass of better wine for dinner instead of the full upgrade.

Thanks everyone. Lots of info to digest there. If the cruise ships didn’t charge so much for their tours everyone would go on them instead of doing a diy. I’m not a penny pincher but some tours cost more than a flight to Rome from the uk!!

Thanks everyone for your replies.I've decided to get the normal train, BIRG ticket and pre-book a HoHo bus. We have done Rome before with an Ocea Village cruise tour but family members who are with us on this cruise haven't. Am I right in thinking a shuttle bus will take you to the train station or would a taxi/walking be needed?

Thanks for all the advice on this topic. First Cruise Lady, did you pre-book your train to Rome and did you use the new express train I have seen somewhere on ‘Google’. I would be most appreciative of any info you can share. And also, does anyone have any ideas for Naples? Thinking of doing either the Amalfi Drive or Capri on our own.

Sorry for hi-jacking this thread but we are in Rome in September and looking at the prices of the cruise excursions we were thinking of booking with another company. Has anybody done this and can recommend one at all? TIA.

Thanks for this review which is very informative. We have just returned from a Thomson Spirit cruise and stay which we thoroughly enjoyed after a 12 year gap of not cruising. I have been looking at C&M as I do fancy the option of sailing from Liverpool. I am assuming that by OV you mean Ocean Village? That was the last cruise line we used and we thoroughly enjoyed that cruise so would be interest to try the Columbus.

Thanks guys. Thomson want approx 50 pp for various tours which includes a gondola ride. I myself have done this back in the 70's so unless the others want to do this I think we will go with your suggestions. Cheers.

My OH, sister-in-law and hubby are on The Spirit from 1-8June and on looking at the excursions offered it would cost a fortune to book them for each port of call. Have any of you lovely cruisers any recommendations for places we should visit and alternatives to booking through Thomson. We have all cruised before but not for a few years and only sis-in-law and Hubby with Thomson. Our ports of call are- Trieste, Venice, Rijeka, Hvar and Bar. TIA for any info you can supply.

We are going on the Spirit in May and have never cruised with Thomson so any more info would be good. We did cruise with Airtours when they started the package tour cruise revolution and had a great time. Have been on a few other cruises since then but always remember our Airtours cruise fondly.
