  1. We were just on the Bliss through the Panama Canal on the January 27 sailing.  We asked our stateroom steward for a third chair so that our friend who was sailing solo in an inside cabin could join us.  He provided a wicker type chair without arms (like those used with dining tables outside the buffet on the pool deck).  This worked fine on our regular balcony.  It just took a little maneuvering.  We still had the tiny table out there, too.

The advice to use the Observation Lounge for the canal transit is solid.  They removed the comfy lounging chairs up by the forward window wall and brought in lots of folding chairs so many people could enjoy the view.

  2. Thanks for trying to answer my question BirdTravels, but this modified drink package doesn't suit our needs. When purchasing a drink package with NCL every adult in the room has to also purchase. This is wasteful for my 2 roomies that don't drink beer and wouldn't want to pay $59+++ /day for a few glasses of house-wine at dinner. We're more interested in a finer selection available by the bottle, which a wine package enables at a reduced price.

As for the "hearsay" comment, isn't that the main purpose of these boards? Often I find the first hand account of a recent cruiser to be more reliable and updated than some cruise line websites. Thanks again.

I think perhaps the wine package you are looking for is the Viva Vino package available for purchase once on board on the day of departure. You can select 4, 6, or 8 bottles with a starting price of $88. There is usually a table set up in the atrium with forms to complete to select the wines of your choice. You will receive vouchers to retrieve your wine in any bar or restaurant on the ship and may enjoy it there or take it to your cabin.

  3. Taking a closer look at the RCI remote photo, there may already be an input/source button on it. The one below the rewind button? Also the photo of the TV may already be in the HDMI source channel.

Sorry the buttons on the TV is something I have missed.

Thanks so much for your reply. Please don't apologize for missing anything. Who would ever think of photographing the TV buttons?! On closer look, it does seem like the button below the rewind on the remote might work.

Thoie, that's a good point about the wifi issue. We don't sail until September of 2016, so if you return with some options that worked for you I'd love to hear about them. We have a 24 day cruise with lots of sea days, so we'll have plenty of time to watch movies/listen to music.

The cabin TV is a Samsung with two HDMI sockets and one USB.

The remote comes with very limited functions. I don't know whether plugging any external sources into the HDMI or USB will work but you will at least need a Samsung remote to change channel to the external source.

What a fantastic review! We'll be on a Transpacific cruise on the Explorer next year and I'm really enjoying all your photos.

Did you notice if there was an input/source button on the TV itself? We'd like to use ChromeCast, but would rather not have to pack a remote.

  5. We were on the Norwegian Sea in 2001. It was our first cruise with Norwegian. I thought your photo of the fountain in the atrium looked familiar. We cruised with three other couples, and two of the three were first time cruisers. We had a great New England and Canada cruise. One of my favorite memories is the duo of musicians who strolled through the dining room serenading the diners. We really enjoyed the sailaway from NYC with the band on deck playing patriot music as we passed the Statue of Liberty. We never thought to turn and look at the Twin Towers...two months later they they would fall. Such a tragedy. We kept saying later that we couldn't imagine how it would have been if the terrorists had struck the week we were at sea, and we had returned to the ruins.

Anyway, thanks for your thread and also for the former review of the Star. We'll be on her for the TA in October. Can't wait!
