  1. do they do it on all carnival ships. Also what about the first night can you order it that night also.

As far as I am aware they do it on all Carnival ships.

I'm not totally sure about first night, but I imagine it's available. If not, there's always the Indian Vegetarian option that's on the actual menu that night which is completely delicious in its own right.

  2. How about Glory, available? Do we preorder like kosher meals?

Just give 24 hours notice - someone posted the schedule of when each thing is available earlier in the thread. As long as you provide 24 hours notice you are fine. I'm not sure what to do for Day 1 - perhaps talk to the Maitre D when you board.

  3. Question for you: since you ordered the indian food ( i assume you did it in advance) - did you get indian meal on the 1st day???

I didn't get it the first night, but it's possible you could order it in advance, perhaps by visiting the Maitre' D upon boarding the ship.

I didn't pre-order before my cruise - I just asked for it during the week, giving at least 24 hours notice.

  4. Question for folks who have had Indian Food in MDR - do they serve Naan or Roti with their entrees or only rice??

    Someone please answer :-)))

Somewhat disappointingly you seem to get tortillas to use as bread. Even on Splendor where they make up naan for the tandoor. The rest of it is all great though, however I felt the butter chicken was better aboard Spirit than Splendor - it probably differs slightly depending on which chefs you get.

  5. Thanks for reminding me to report back on this. Should have done this 6 weeks ago when fresher in my mind.

I did get it one night on the cruise. Choice was veg or chicken and I picked the chicken.

Ordered regular apps and than the Indian stuff came out.

There was about 5 dishes of which some I had no clue what they were.

Was dishes of chicken in some sort of sauce, vegetable stew of some sort, curry, rice and do not remember the other one.

The problem was everything was way to spicy for me so I did not have too much of it. Found out later that I could have asked for mild.

Luckily for me our waiter ordered me an e xtra lamb entre and after a few bites of each dish gave up on it.

Several other people at our table tasted what I had and all thought it was too spicy.

I will try this again but I will definitely order as mild.

I didn't find what I had overly spicy, but then I'm a spicy food fanatic so I guess it all depends on what you're used to. It's nice that you can order it mild if you like. That's a nice tip for people reading this thread to keep in mind.

  6. Going on Splendor again soon and looking forward to more Indian food. Does anyone know if Day 1 on this chart refers to embarkation day or the technical "day 1" of the cruise which is usually the following day? I'm pretty keen on the Chicken Tikka Masala on day 1.

for anybody curious, here's a sample menu for a 7 day cruise...

all subject to change and such. for longer sailings, the chef will make selections for the additional days.

  7. how do you all decide what night to request the indian meal in advance? is there a way of seeing the nightly menus ahead of time?

and if you order hteindian food for hte night is it a complete meal or do you order soups and apps off the regular menu?

    Sorry for the late reply.

Someone's linked the menus here on the first page of this thread.

If you ask for the Indian you can ask for a vegetarian meal or a non vegetarian and you get a whole spread - see the photos also on the first page of the thread.

You can also order stuff off the regular menu.

What I'm not curious about is what will happen if I just ask for ONE thing because I LOVE chicken tikka masala and that's really the only thing that turns me on for the first night. I wonder if I can ask for a big serving of it and forget about the rest of the stuff lol.

  8. never cruised Carnival before, looking at Dream or Freedom in April 2011. Any suggestions for those who have been on either? Both are Eastern Carribbean, Dream is 7 nights 3 ports/3 sea days and Freedom is 8 nights 4 ports/3 sea days. I can get an ocean view on either for pretty much the same price. We are a family with 2 boys age 14 and 10, so need lots of activity on ship. The family rooms on Dream look nice with bigger bathroom but don't want to base my decision on that. Any advice? Thanks!

They are both pretty new ships so I wouldn't hesitate about either. If you're at all interested in Spa facilities go with Dream for absolute certain. I haven't sailed on her myself, but her Spa setup is apparently similar to that on Splendor which is incredible in this regard.

Dream is a significantly larger ship which would probably sway my decision in her favour if I liked both itineraries the same. I don't really hold with this "Smaller ships are better" point of view as I really like a big ship to explore. Maybe this is because I tend to avoid the Lido and Pool areas at all times, but I've never noticed huge crowds on the larger ships (Splendor as compared to Spirit for example).

  9. Just looking at the photos make me want to eat it again right now. I really wish they would put this sort of stuff on the Indian taste of nations. Do they think everyone is afraid of the gravies? Everything's so dry in the TON. A huge part of the joy of Indian food is mopping up all the wonderful sauces :)

  10. Iv never been offered a list .. even our waiter was clueless, he told me it would just be one entree .. and I said well we got a whole dinner last time and he didnt believe me, so I ordered some stuff from the regular menu and ruined my appetite last time.. turns out I was right, our waiter was clueless.

maybe on other ships, they offer a list.. on Triumph both times, you only got the choice, do you want meat or not.

All you have to do is ask the host or hostess. They were the person we had to talk to in order to find out what options were available each evening. Someone posted the exact list we were shown on page one of this thread.

  11. You are given the choice of vegetarian or meat (both times the meat was chicken) .. that's all the explanation. They decide what to make. Im guessing the folks who added names of foods knew it .. as both times I did it, I had no idea what I was eating.

Yes, except that what they are making is set for the specific night, so you'll be able to ask as to what is available for vegetarians and non-vegetarians on any given night.

  12. Does the menu for the Indian meals have explanations as to what they are? I know what some of the items are, but I wouldn't have a clue what "Navratan Korma" is without an explanation.

No, it's just a list of what is available each night.

We knew what all the things available our night were, but they (not knowing we knew) wrote it all down for us, so I assume if you ask what the things are they will be able to let you know.

What you could also do is check the menu someone posted above and look up all the dishes on Wikipedia.

  13. Is this menu widely advertised? My DH will LOVE this and I will make sure to ask in advance but I had no clue that it was even an option.

It seems like a pretty broad menu for just Indian food...I wonder why are there so many different options...is this something they cook every night because there are enough people that request it?

Do they have an Chinese special menu??

Thanks for letting us know about this!

It's not widely advertised. It's mainly for the crew, many of whom are Indian.

  14. Other than the bread the first time, my food did not taste spicy to me at all. Its like Indian home cooking, not like a restaurant would make.

Actually for me it was exactly like a restaurant would make which was why I liked it so much. Most Indian fare isn't blazingly hot unless you order a curry specifically known for this like a vindaloo.

  15. Just a note here for anyone who has been scared off my the mediocrity of the "Indian taste of nations" and the tandoor on Splendor. The Indian meals you can pre-request in the MDR are the real deal - not tweaked for people who don't generally eat Indian food.

The wife and I just returned from the NYE Mexican Riviera cruise down on Spirit. With her being a vegetarian and me a little fussy about what meat I eat (I don't eat seafood or lamb or anything cooked below medium-well) the menu got a little old for us after four cruises in less than two years and we found ourselves ordering the same things every cruise. This time after some encouragement from a head waiter we decided to try out this option we had only previously heard about. Apparently you only need to give them 24 hours notice rather than the longer heads-up others have suggested.

For the last night the MDR menu didn't thrill us (it would have been a flat iron steak for me) so we ended up with Chicken Makhani (substitutes for Navratan Korma for my wife's vegetarian needs) and Mattar Paneer for me with sides of dahl, basmati rice, and pappadums as well as some little salads and other fixins.

I found it all absolutely delicious, as good as I've had in quality Indian restaurants on land and while my wife found her korma a little cauliflowertastic for her taste, she still had more than enough delicious fare to mean we both skipped dessert and waddled out to our next engagement.

This was NOT the dry, gravy-bereft fare they serve up on the buffets but is really delicious Indian food. Don't be afraid to give it a try. The hostess was able to show us a little binder showing what was on offer for each night of the cruise and it was all so easy.
