  1. Good for your husband, I'm glad to hear he's sober. My sister has been sober for 30 years and she still goes to 2 AA meetings a week, regular as clockwork. She says it's the AA meetings that are the reason she made it 30 years.

She'll attend at least 1 Friends of Bill meeting on our upcoming cruise. I hope your husband does too.

  2. If you are close enough to a Bear to need or try to use "bear spray" then you better start praying!!!

So true! :) I live in bear country and frequently go hiking with my dog. If we see a bear we leave. Fast. Haven't ever had any trouble that way and I don't intend to.

  3. When I cruised to Alaska in 2010 we did the Inside Passage and not Glacier Bay, so keep in mind that glacier watching can be COLD. I was very comfortable with long-sleeved t-shirts, jeans, fleece jacket, and parka with a removable lining. I brought snow boots specifically for a chilly gold mine tour. Otherwise my sneakers were fine. However, I do wish I had WATERPROOFED both boots and sneakers. Do that and you will be fine.

Since my hands get cold I brought gloves but my teenage son didn't and never needed them.

We experienced very changeable weather in May. Low at Juneau -- maybe 50s during the day and 70s in Ketchikan. It was coldest in the gold mine. (Fun though!)

  4. I would never intentionally plan a schedule that would get me back to the ship at the 30 minute before departure deadline.

Me either. Call me chicken but an hour is the least amount of time I will allow myself to get back on the ship. I have nightmares about standing sadly at the dock as my ship sails away! :)

  5. Out of my first 4 cruises, 3 were on Carnival. The other one was on RC. I was perfectly happy with each cruiseline, and mostly chose Carnival because of the price. I don't go to shows so I don't care about entertainment or the lack thereof.

The reason I'm going back to Alaska on NCL instead of Carnival is that 1) Carnival's string of engine mishaps made me really nervous and 2) their 2014 schedule came out a month or more later after everyone else's! And I'm always willing to try a new cruiseline.

  6. Hi everyone! I originally heard about Curt and his colors on Cruise Critic. I had been a Winter for many years -- or rather thought I was. Then I got interested in these threads and thought I was an Earth.

Well... now you know why I should have someone who actually knows what they're doing help me.

When I ordered the Earth cards, thankfully Curt gently suggested that I might be interested in an Internet consult before I went to the expense of ordering cards. I'm so glad I did, since -- you guessed it -- I'm neither Winter nor Earth, but Fire. I'm so excited because I get to wear bright and rich colors, which is what I liked in Winter. I just got back from my early cruise, this time Carnival Paradise out of Long Beach. My son and I had some pictures taken together and he remarked how I don't "looked washed out like you usually do." No I don't, because I'm finally wearing the right colors!

Curt was wonderful and amazing in the time he spent on emails with me, especially when we were testing with digital photos and I was really clueless about what constitutes Earth and Fire colors. Endless patience, good will and humor.

The right colors in clothes, makeup and hair have helped me to feel attractive again.

And yes, I'll post pictures I promise!

  7. Welcome chrislynnet!...or is it Chris? or Lynn? or Lynne? or Lynnette? LOL

I read your post on the awards thread...pictures reveal the truth...and when you see the way that Curt looks at people in colors...it's like a whole new world opens up to see the effect of color on your appearance! So are you in the midst of a wardrobe overhaul now? Getting ready for your May cruise?

Hi Anita! "Chris" will do fine -- I should have signed my posts, sorry about that! I'm working with Curt now doing the Internet Consultation. Who knows -- maybe instead of an Earth or Winter I'll be a Fire! ;)

    Chris

  8. Hi! I'm a newly discovered Earth... sorry, couldn't resist. I thought I was a Winter (Ice) for years until I started noticing that I was looking chalky and older in those colors. I started researching and finally realize that I'm an Earth. I'm glad you all are here, believe me!

  9. Hi.

So, maybe a 55+ forum is casting too large a net, just as the senior mags are doing. If the forum were broken into 2 parts, one for those 55 and older and one for those 75+ for example (now that I think of it, maybe the forum should be split 3 ways!) more people might be willing to get on board, so to speak. As it is, boomers don't want to be classed with older folks, and older folks may not have that much in common with those young enough to be their children.

Sorry, I could have edited this better, but--there it is!

    Ray and Rachel

That's not a bad idea although I'm not sure I fit anywhere really. I'm 57 but have a 14-year-old. (Yep, I started late.) So I relate to the parents of teens in terms of kid activities, but those parents are considerably younger than I am. Still, I agree that 55+ is a seriously huge spread.

  10. I used to use a packing list until I found polyvore dot com. I pick out clothes I already own, or very similar, (you can import your own photos) and mix and match outfits there. I

planktin, I am LOVING Polyvore! Thanks so much, I had no idea such a thing existed. It's been really helpful already for my cruise, and also for ideas about other types of dressing.
