Civitavecchia Cab Service - 100 euro for a shared cab
-
We rented a car from Avis - 50 euro plus gas. It is EXTREMELY easy to get to Olympia from the port. Avis was wonderful. They gave us maps and detailed instructions. I was concerned prior to the excursion, but there was absolutely no need for concern. We also had time to go to the beach and shop at the port.

Shared shuttle...we dropped people off at airport and airport hotel before being taken to our hotel in Rome. They were prompt and professional.

Like Pompeii, Ostia Antica is a huge site -- and like Pompeii there is not a lot of explanatory signage. It's easy to wander the site and get the basic idea of it, but there's also a good likelihood of missing interesting things unless you go with a plan.
Fortunately, there is a very good website with information about the site. Here you'll find very good directions on how to get to the site as well as a condensed guide that you can print (or download) and take with you.
Directions on reaching the site (with photos): http://www.ostia-antica.org/visiting.htm
Printable/downloadable pdf guide: http://www.ostia-antica.org/touristguide.pdf
I do not recall if there is an audioguide available or not.
Thank you cruisemom42. I had found that guide too and it looks great. It is the reason I decided to DIY Ostia Antica. Also, Rick Steves has a downloadable audio guide that we will use.

We are planning to visit Ostia Antica while we are in Rome. Do we need to book a private tour guide? Or is Ostia Antica a place where we can DIY it? Thanks!

OP,
Yes you will have to wake up at 3am to get the underground tickets. The entire process is rather frustrating and a bit difficult. The website is slow probably because everyone is trying to get tickets at the same time (tour operators too). I found it helpful to try the entire process first, going through the motions of selecting tickets and seeing how the website works. Even with that, I had 5 browsers up at once in order to just get connected to the website as they timed out before connecting constantly. Have 2-3 times you are willing to take in mind before you start the process. Be flexible if you can. Also, if you don't end up getting direct tickets, you can always pay more to a tour operator and go on their tour. It's the same tour (I believe).

I received a response from my email with my print-at-home tickets attached. I think I just bring the confirmation for the underground tour to the Colosseum on the day of my tour for those tickets.
-
I, too, just emailed etickets@coopculture.it with my receipt attached to see where my tickets are. I will let everyone know the results of the email.
-
Hey VBMom:
Did you get your ticket confirmation emailed to you? I have received only a payment confirmation, nothing from the actual website yet. I'm getting worried. I keep checking my email and my spam. I emailed them a couple days ago and have heard nothing further other than they processed my payment. Is that all we get?
Thanks
I have not received my ticket yet and actually forgot that I needed to get one. Please let me know what they say to you when they write back.

this is the info I used to book the underground tours. Gma - it should explain the tour a bit.

Well that was a harrowing experience! I too was up at midnight my time to get tickets for an August Underground Colosseum tour. I had 5 browsers going and they all timed out frequently. I too think I was lucky enough to snag the tickets I wanted. We'll see if I get the appropriate confirmation email. At least I printed the confirmation after purchase. I, too, could not find the appropriate nationality. However, when I put in my phone number, nationality auto-populated with Stati Uni. All dates were sold out within 20 minutes.

What if you brought an open bottle of wine into the dining room? Would they still charge the corkage fee?

When in Rome... I always go into the McDonald's that's under the Spanish Steps. It's actually very pretty. I like to compare the prices to U.S. McDonald's.

Is it on the same ship? I'd try and find someone who has done it on the same cruise as I've seen things vary from one cruise to another. I did just spend a couple of months with the OP in our roll call and a week at sea with him so I don't doubt his appraisal. If someone wants to be hyper critical of his title choice that is another story.
I'm on the JoTS this August. Does someone have some experience with the Wines Around the World on the JoTS? Thanks for the review.
-
So I just looked at my Cruise Planner to see if the Wines of the World that I purchased was in the MDR. It is. Do you suggest canceling the purchase? Because the description from the OP is NOT what I would enjoy.
-
Deluxe Beverage plus 1 Device Voom just dropped price on my cruise from $54/day to $48/day. I was able to cancel prior order and re-order at the new price. I saved close to $50.

I've been on nutrisystem (on and off) for 3 years. On it now before my August cruise.
-
Both of these activities just showed up as available on my cruise. However, both are exactly at the same time. Which activity should I choose and why? Thanks!
-
This thread has been extremely helpful. Stuff I didn't know and now do! Thanks to everyone who commented and informed on the thread.

Thanks to Dennas, I went to check out buying tour tickets in anticipation of my visit to Rome this coming August. I see that there are 2 sets of tickets available to purchase. One says "Underground and 3rd Ring Tour - English - Reservation Fee" for 11 pounds. The other says "FREE Underground and 3rd Ring Tour - English - Reservation Fee for 2 pounds. What is the difference between these two reservations? Do we need to purchase both?

Aside from Voom, does anyone have any suggestions for staying connected while cruising? I just want to connect (chat, message, email) with my private tour operators and tours before we get to port. I also want to connect with other people I'm traveling to stay in touch while on board and on shore. If Voom is the best option, please say so as well. Thanks.

I'm just thrilled that I don't have to cook or do the dishes.

I've stayed at the Hotel Denit Barcelona and really loved it. It was right off Las Ramblas and the Placa Catalyuna. It was quite reasonable and I would definitely recommend it.
Civitavecchia cab service
in Italy Ports
Posted
I used Civitavecchia Cab Service from Ciampino to the ship and then, on return, from the ship to our hotel. They were on time (early even) and very reliable. They were also the least expensive alternative. While I didn't really like sharing a transfer, the inconvenience was definitely worth the reduced price. I would recommend them and I'm sorry other posters have had unpleasant experiences with them.
