Charles, I truncated your comment, hopefully I left the context.

My option was for those that don't want to invest in an expensive phone. I carry the cheap phone with me on sea days and when the weather is bad. I love my iPhone camera, but also carry a Sony 6400 with two lenses, a Nikon 7500 and leave behind a nonsensical collection of cameras at home going back to a Nikon F2 Photomic. OK, I'm old.

I just invested in a full frame Canon mirrorless and these are from the 6400 on the Quantum in June.

    See you at sea!

Oh yum! My go-to is a little old-a Nikon D90 that "Santa " brought me the Christmas before our Alaska cruisetour. When a camera feels right in your hands it just works more natually than the latest & greatest that you have to adapt to. My regional camera shop has the latest & greatest software to work with your stuff & I write surrounded by awesome shots up to 20X30" Small & portable is good, but give me quality!

Actually, my first flip phone was one of these - traded up from my Motorola “brick”

Oh no! A Micro TEC! There's a flashback! I worked for a cell company in a rural area w/a lot of hills in the early 90's & we did a LOT of installed 3 watt phones & bag phones! (Young ones-ask your grandparents!) That company was taken over by one quite larger w/a 3 letter name, so things have certainly changed, but if I had to I'm sure I could still climb up onto a truck roof & repair a broken roof mount antenna!

  3. Covid (& large recent expenses-I'm looking at you HOUSE!) have kept us closer to home lately, but after having my passport for almost 35 years & will not let it expire. DL regs have changed, but the passport goes on & on. My most recent experience was when I took a pile of sticks to our local yard waste dropoff. They chip them into mulch & return it to the residents. My car @ the time was a 20 year old sedan-not exactly the contractors dump trucks. We had just received our renewed passports & I was going to drop them off at the bank box on the way home. The keeper of the dump got in my face as was his habit, so when he asked for ID I produced my newly renewed passport. He went nuts! He yelled at me that it was NOT AN ID! I think he'd just never seen one before! So, although the staff at border crossings should be more professional, you never know what you'll run into. As for me, I'll carry any ID that I have-just in case! (Oh, and the rest of the story is that he's not the gatekeeper @ the dump anymore & the contractors were very nice to me!)

  4. Multiple guests hauling them in 100 at a time-really? To each his own, but luggage is an enemy of the airlines & I'd rather save space for my clothes or souveniers. I'm certainly not paying for extra pieces of luggage-there are too many fun things to spend that money on! Just frugal I guess....

  5. My mother was on PD for several years & took her own equipment but arranged delivery of supplies to the vacation rental through her dialysis provider. (Liquids are HEAVY!) You might want to talk to your clinic, they probably have dealt w/this. I worked for a DME company at one point & we frequently coordinated oxygen delivery to travel destinations. Travel is possible with chronic conditions, although I'd be a little nervous relying on airline schedules with recent weather & damage delays. If you can drive to the port-GO for it!

  6. This is the first I was aware of this-it's kinda silly, but shouldn't vacation have a little silly? (can you say towel animals?) As long as people aren't breaking into your room & filling it w/ducks, who is it hurting? It sounds like the people hiding them are having fun with it (fun is GOOD) but if you don't want to, you don't have to-it's YOUR vacation-enjoy it your way!

  7. So nice to hear that I'm the only one who doesn't feel the need for a smartphone. Woman's clothes tend not to have pockets large enough to carry them & I really don't want to go back to a backpack! Still, more places offer no option to "Scan this ugly code" including my Alma Mater. Oh well, no other option means you don't want my business or contribution-Simple!

  8. He will no doubt enjoy tons of attention from his full time "family"  (crew) & lots of new friends all the time. If his "personality" is agreeable with this he'll have a happy life. Lots of dogs are neglected or abandoned-he certainly won't spend his life chained on a deck & he will be a great joy to those he will love. Dogs are great!

  9. My Alaskan cruise was not solo, and not with Princess, but we also had a balcony & think the idea of a solo breakfast with a toast to the snowy peaks is fantastic! I hope it works out for you, and don't miss the experience of gliding by those snowy mountains in a hot tub on deck with a refreshing beverage! Excellent!

  10. I don't have one either, because I don't want one & would rather spend my money on fun stuff instead of a clunky electronic leash, but more & more you have to scan, or app, or something to get something as simple as a sale on canned goods.  Some of the organizations I'm involved with are so proud that the only way to access their display info is by scanning one of their ugly codes. I remind them that not everyone has or wants a smartphone, but I believe that the day is coming when I won't be able to read a menu without one. Well, guess I'll know who wants my business! Hopefully by then, woman's clothes will come with pockets big enough to carry one of these bricks-your average jeans will hold one tissue & a key fob. Who want's to tote one of these around & worry about it being stolen on their ship?

We like them too.  Now thinking of getting them for home...

I've never had them on a ship, but there was one in our laundry room when we bought the house. Why did no one ever think of this before! Walk in with hands full of laundry basket & they come on! Oh, but no one sleeping in that room to be disturbed... Just an idea for home

I collect local reusable grocery store shopping bags too (I thought I was the only one). Do you remember where you got your shopping bag? We'll be stopping in Ketchikan, Icy Straight, Juneau, and Skagway as well as a land tour afterward that includes Talkeetna, Denali, and Anchorage. We will not have a car during our trip.

I know this is WAY after the fact, but my Alaska bag came from Fred Meyers in Fairbanks and I think they are all over the state. We did a cruisetour so we didn't have a car either (major culture shock for me!) but there was a free shuttle that circled from our hotel through the shopping district that we used to get the bag and the drinks & snacks for the land tour

  13. Wow, I never thought about folks that didn't receive their luggage...and my parents were once some of them! Because of me!  I drove them to the airport with Dad's car and my single key for the car. This was probably the 80's, my car was a hatchback with only one key-Dad's car had a different key for the trunk & his keys were left safely at their house and this was before trunk releases in the car, so they took off without their luggage and borded the ship with no luggage and dressed to the nines (they used to wear the formal stuff to travel-go figure?) They could buy T-shirts on the ship, but spent the first day of their short cruise truly overdressed for the Carribean!  Oh, and somehow we got the luggage flown to the ship at the first port, but you can imagine how (not!) excited I was when the time came to pick them up at the airport after the cruise! But they didn't kill me!

  14. Did almost the same trip several years ago & loved your review-it brought back so many memories! You would love the pictures on our walls-we flew into Fairbanks on the summer solstice & have an amazing shot from the Grande Denali...taken at 11 :30 PM! I agree about stocking up on snacks, especially on the land portion. I still use my reuseable shopping bag I bought @ Fred Meyers-my go-to souvenier-Cheap (usually $1 or $2) folds flat in your suitcase, and there's ALWAYS something you need to carry! I have them from stores from Fairbanks to the Florida keys and they have prompted some really nice conversations at the checkout at my local grocery store. Just saying!

    Thanks for the memories!

  15. Our cruie followed a weeklong tour, so we'd had a lot of "togetherness" with previously unknown folks and requested a table for 2. We were shown to a table occupied by 6 other people, and I felt terrible apologizing to them (it's not you folks, but...) and again requesting a table for 2. I think this made the waiter mad, as we were then shown to an empty table for 6 located between a serving station and the wall of the kitchen where, judging from the sounds, a wresteling match was taking place. At least the dirty tablecloth gave us to opportunity to guess what the last diners enjoyed! Oh, there were plenty of tables for 2 unoccupied. That was our last visit to the MDR!

People should be able to choose how they want to dine, whether that means at a large mixed table of just with their own party.

  16. Tracy's for sure! We had lunch there & decided to go back for dinner, even though the food on board was free! While waiting for our food we were talking to a couple from another ship in port who said "You're going to love this-it's so good that we had lunch here & had to come back for dinner!" Nice to know it's not just US!

  17. We didn't expect to have access to laundry on our RCI cruisetour, but one of the hotels had facilities that we used. Had I known that, we could have gotten along with less luggage! Hotel websites aren't accurate about this, but you could always call & ask. I wish I had done that when we checked into a National Park property and found out that the advertised laundry facilities were seasonal... but there was another conviently located 45 miles away!

  18. You will receive 2 different color luggage tags-one for the bags you will need to have delivered to your room daily, and one for any baggage that you won't need on the land portion-they will be delivered to your cabin when you board the ship. The idea is that if you have formal clothes for onboard that you don't need on land, you don't have to trip over that suitcase in your hotel room! We carried one case each and checked a 3rd bag through to the ship-it was nice to see clean clothes halfway through the trip!

I did a land tour before my Alaska cruise a couple years ago. Check out the Alaska board-there's a lot more discussion of this over there, or please ask me any questions you might have. You are on your own for meals, but your guide can make suggestions of local restaurants at different price points. Your transportation, lodging, and admissions are included. Oh-and they transport your luggage & deliver it to your room daily-sweet!

  20. I often use a trip as an excuse to clean out the underwear drawer & ditch them after one use-cleans out my drawer & leaves space in the luggage for the new stuff I get!

On land based trips we usually buy a cheap cooler when we start out & before we leave usually "set it free" at the hotel ice machine. Last trip we had unopened water bottles, paper plates, etc-a regular picnic kit. I left a note on it "I'm just back from an adventure & would love to join you on another-take me with you"

  21. The usual shirts & some hematite jewelry-inexpensive, but different. My pictures are my favorite keepsakes! For a downright CHEAP souvenir that you can use daily, I try to pick up a reusable shopping bag at a local grocery store. They take up almost no room in luggage, come in handy while traveling, and can be used to carry groceries once you get home. I have them from stores from Alaska to Florida & they have been conversation starters with several cashiers here in the lower 48! I guess I just like being reminded of the places I've traveled while doing something as mundane as grocery shopping!

  22. Without knowing how many pics, sizes & such, it sounds like a LOT of money! Any drugstore chain or decent photo store can put together a book with photos of you AND what was important to you for a very reasonable price. I recently ordered a small book online for a birthday & it cost little more than a birthday card!

  23. Not on a cruise but in a vacation apartment rental-on our second day my husband reached in a drawer for a fork & pulled out several hundred dollars in Canadian cash! (this was in the US) The previous tenant must have thought it was a good hiding spot & it was-THEY couldn't find it! Luckily our landlord had contact info for them. I only wish I could lose a good sum of money & not miss it!

  24. The only thing I had to buy was a clock-there was none in our cabin on the ship & I didn't want to miss our excursions! The only other thing (that hasn't been mentioned-lots of good advice so far!) is any books, local reference material-there was nothing about Alaska in the ship's library. I was later told that the library is stocked with what passengers donate. I wish I'd have known that before, I could have brought the books left at home & left them for the next group!
