  1. One more -- the easy button, absolutely hysterical!

Well, actually, seven of them acted in perfect unison. The eighth soldier could not get his bayonet out of the sheath. As discretely as possible, he yanked and tugged at the thing as the face of the Sergeant became redder and redder. Under that dreadful glare, he abandoned all efforts at subtlety, and grabbed at the sheath with both hands and tried by pure force of effort to pry the weapon from its holder.

I saw the Sergeant’s jaw drop and the look of startled panic on the Private’s face as the forgotten rifle slowly fell to the Rotunda’s hard marble floor.

I guess, up to that point, I never guessed that the rifles were actually loaded…having thought that they were basically, oh, I don’t know…empty? I think that during the few seconds it took for the carbine to fall to the floor, the young Private knew that life, as he had known it, was forever gone. I suspect that he knew, even in that brief moment, that his next assignment would probably be guarding the unmanned weather station on the windswept Isla del Diablo.

If I had had an Easy Button, I would have gladly given it to him.

  2. ... but at “maybe around six, six-thirty, or sevenish.” I had expected to hear “we will be leaving at 1600 hours”, or maybe “we will leaving at 8 bells”, or even “we will be sailing on the next tide”. But Sevenish? Is it possible that our new Captain is, like, from the Valley? ...

Your review rocked! Fantastic style! My husband came in a few minutes ago and asked if I had lost my mind. I guess I wasn't using my "inside laugh." Thanks for taking the time to do this.

  3. I'm sailing this Sunday as well! BTW, I see that weather in the Caribbeans stays around 80s right now - does it mean that water will be a bit cold to swim?

And what's with this board and capers fetish?

Capers is the Carnival daily newsletter (which tells you everything that's going on). CarnivalpAPERS.

  4. I had to really search and finally did this screen print from Webshots. What I wanted was a picture from the back of the Conquest to see our cabin from the outside. Anyone have a pic from the back corner without the other stuff from webshots?

    Here's port aft:

Right click on the pic, and then select "set as background" or "desktop background" (depending on your browser).

  5. Hey Catahoula. Is that your name because you have one??

We have one too. You don't run into too many Catahoula owners where we live though. Here is a pic we took yesterday at the beach.

That's a Catahoula Cur? I was born and raised in New Orleans, and spent most of my teenage life in McComb, MS, and we had several Catahoula Curs. They were all splotchy gray with bright blue eyes. That guy looks like a black and tan.

  6. I agree with you about the land tour. It gives you the best of both worlds

Yes, that's true if you want to pay double or even triple than what you can do on your own, and of course, not having about 100 or so other people every step of the way.

We took a one-way from Vancouver to Whittier, rented a car in Anchorage for 5 days and had a magnificent time. Spent a day in Denali on the regular bus tour, omigosh so awesome. I've got pics of sooooooo many animals once you get past the first 20 miles or so. Had a grizzly scratching his back on the gravel right IN FRONT of our bus.

  7. We were on the Conquest in August, 2003, and the heat wasn't so bad when the ship was moving, I remember the wind feeling good on my face when standing on the balcony, though the idea of leaving the balcony door open so we could hear the waves was ludicrous. We rented a jeep in Cozumel to drive around the island, thought I was going to burn up. Omigosh! it was hot. No a/c, had to put up the top so the sun wouldn't beat down on us anymore. I don't remember Cayman or Jamaica being as bad.

  8. Like most others have stated, we choose based on itinerary for Alaska. Last year, we chose a RT from Vancouver on NCL Sun which seemed to have the most inside passage cruising. We fell in love with Alaska and this year, we're doing a northbound on the Sun Princess with 4 days tagged on at the end for some independent touring (Denali and Talkeetna). Our requirements for this cruise were: a lot of inside passage cruising, Glacier Bay and College Fjords, along with the ports we loved last year (Ketchikan, Skagway and Juneau). Princess fit the bill perfectly.
