  1. I bought a Nikon D40 at Royal Carribean in St Thomas a few years ago when it first came out. I priced it back home and on the internet before we left. A lot of stores at home didn't have it in stock (Nikon had the advertising campaign where they gave everyone in one town a D40 to use). With the extra lens, a Royal Caribbean camera bag, plus a few other freebies tossed in, I saved over $250 from the prices I found before the cruise for the same accessories. It definitely pays to comparison shop.

  2. You can walk up to La Bombanera for their breakfast and Puerto Rican coffee (and try one of their pastries). There is also the cathedral which is beautiful. Don Collins Cigars (if you smoke) is about a block up the hill from the cathedral.

We love to walk through OSJ. If you stay down along the harbor, you can walk along the Paseo de la Princesa. Up in town is Barrachina, home of the pina colada.

The Bacardi factory is entertaining, also.

  3. For us, San Juan is not our port,

The only time we were there, we went walking around, just as far as Senior Frogs and back, and on our way back, we were accosted by a person claiming to have been attacked, (he was bleeding slightly) did not want help, but wanted money. Would not leave us alone. We ended up in the Cold Stone Creamery for Ice cream and then back on the ship.

Now it was night, we ported at 6pm.

I would not recommend it (being accosted) we will not get off the ship again in the dark, probably any port. Day will probably be better.

I understand this completely. Our first time in San Juan was after dark and I thought it felt so sinister with the streets being so narrow. However, we have sailed from San Juan several times and have spent tons of time there during the day. What a difference! I absolutely love OSJ. We have spent time in OSJ, Isla Verde, and the Condado beach.

  4. Just off the Legend last week, and we had CBS, NBC, ABC, and FOX. I think 2 of the stations were from Buffalo and 2 from Miami. However at times, we were getting Canadian feeds for those networks. We also had 2 news channels that I think were CNN and CNN International. The Discovery Channel didn't show regular programming but specific show without commercials.

On our last sea day (college football Saturday) Carnival had satellite network issues and all 4 networks were off until late afternoon/early evening.

  5. I was in a really good mood when we got our postcard. Yes it says 'we have been trying to contact you'. Really?? So for the fun of it, I called the number and was told that there is a new vacation planning agency opening in our area and that they are running this promotion to get new clients. All I had to do was travel an hour and 15 minutes to sit through a 90 minute sales presentation in some hotel's conference center.

Then I began the questions.... "What is the name of the agency so I can research it?" "How have you been trying to contact me since this is the first mailing and we have not had any phone messages?" "Why can't we have the sales presentation at the agency's office?" "Why isn't the agency's name anywhere on the postcard?" "So I can come to this presentation without a checkbook or credit cards and I'll still get the free trip?" When she couldn't answer any of them, I just said no thanks.

  6. We have encountered rudeness onboard but then again, DH and I work in industries where we literally encounter those types of people EVERY SINGLE DAY!!!

It sucks when we come across it while on vacation but them's the breaks and I guess we've built up a tolerance to it or maybe we are both such a couple of smartasses that we've built up an arsenal of witty comebacks for those situations...

But I have to say that the rudest encounter we have had onboard was while sitting in the solarium and a Blue Hair started dragging a lounger across the deck... the lounger got caught on my DH's foot (he's tall so his feet tend to hang over the edge a bit)... she literally kept pulling on her lounger (and subsequently, DH's foot) until he yelled quite loudly, "OUCH, DAMMIT B**** my foot's not coming with you"...

She actually had the nerve to be offended, offered NO apology... rolled her eyes, huffed and puffed and acted all irritated by the incident...

The least she could have done was offered to buy him a drink after trying to take off his foot with her stupid lounger...

Never occurred to your DH that all he had to do was move his foot? I know being on vacation makes people not want to do anything strenuous, but....

  7. P.S.U. My "Role Model" is a Senior Citizen...His name is Joe Paterno, and, as a Penn State Alum, I will always attempt to follow his example: Success with Integrity! One cannot go wrong with THAT mantra!!!!

From one PSU alum to another, Paterno is the greatest role model for anyone!

  8. You might have seen me doing that. One dish for me and one for my sister waiting at our table so no one would remove our drinks and sit down at it as has happen in the past. And, probably the third dish was for an elderly couple sitting next to us who wanted to taste something else from the buffet line but just didn't feel like standing in that long line with their walkers. So I offered to help them out by getting it for them.

    And I wasn't waddling :p .

Oh I can definitely bet a lifetime's income it wasn't you. :) I watched this woman sit down and eat EVERYTHING on those 6 plates. I don't know how she got up from the table.

  9. A 'lady' (or should I just say woman) in front of me in the breakfast buffet actually threw 2 slices of toast at the crewmember working behind the station because it wasn't toasted dark enough to her liking. When he toasted 2 slices for her, they were too dark and she crumbled one slice in her hand and threw the crumbs at him. It was too much for me to handle. I suggested that she should avoid the buffet in the future since she was annoying fellow passengers with her boorish behavior. (No wonder the rest of the world just loves us Americans :D)

I've also seen people waddling from the buffet with 3 plates lined up each arm and negotiating the traffic expertly on the way to their feeding trough. Balancing acts like that need to be on America's Got Talent.

Then there are the people that just don't have common sense. Last year in Antigua, we took an excursion that drove through a relatively poor area of the city. The homes were in poor condition with no windows. Being a very hot day (surprising, huh?), a woman in our tour bus actually asked where the people kept their air conditioning units since they weren't visible from the street.

Those are the only 3 incidents that stand out in my memory from our cruises.

All in all, people are very nice and extremely friendly. One year our tablemates were a Mexican couple from Chihuahua just slightly older than us. He spoke broken English and she didn't speak it at all (or so he said). They were very engaging. He was a lingerie salesman down there and she ran a lingerie store - at least that's what I got out of the translation. The waiter approached them the 3rd night and asked if they would prefer to be seated with a group that spoke Spanish as there were 2 openings at that table. The couple insisted that they were staying with us; my wife and I tried to explain that we would not be offended, but they wouldn't hear of it. We were pleased that they enjoyed our company. On the last night I had the waiter bring a cake to celebrate her birthday; the smile was priceless.
