  1. Sete is on the Etang de Thau and as Rodan said it is a port and also a large base for the petrochemical industry. Not a lot to do.

Nearby places include Montpellier, which is one of the oldest university towns in France. There is a wonderful mix of old and modern architecture - I like to go there for lunch on the river.

If you like oysters you will be in heaven at nearby Bouzigues - some of the most famous in France. Good fish restaurants along the quai, sleepy village. Meze is another sleepy village further along the shore of the etang. Nimes is packed with history and good food. Aigues Mortes is fab, the old walled town has squares and narrow streets and cute stores. Good local wines include Picpoul de Pinet and Frontignan. You're not far from the Carmargue with its amazing wetlands, bulls and horses and flamingoes.

Hope this helps! This area is a couple of hours from my home and we visit often.

  2. None needed. I guess you could always get them if you wanted to, and if your doctor is willing to give them to you, but they are not required as you will not be going into the "wilds" of the jungles for days & days. We are a couple in our late 60's and have never gotten any vaccinations or inoculations for any of our cruises, and have never had one sick day at sea or when returning home.

    Smooth Sailing! :)

we had to have yellow fever, hepatitis, polio for a cruise up the Amazon. We were also loaded down with antimosquito drugs (which I eventually threw away as they made me sick!) plus sprays etc. Perhaps we were lucky but never even SAW a mozzy, let alone got bitten by one. Get more bites here in my own backyard! still I guess it's better to be safe than sorry

  3. I live on the Spanish border not far from Perpignan, so officially we are further south than the Riviera. The 13th May is Ascension Day and, yes, it is a holiday, which will spill over into Friday, Saturday and Sunday. It shouldn't hinder your plans, though. Marseilles is a lot more cosmopolitan than Aix. Enjoy your vacation. And good luck with the Ratafia.

  4. This stuff is made in nearby Besalu so I'm pretty sure you can buy it in Barcelona in any good booze shop (bodega) You could even try the food hall in Corte Ingles at the top of Ramblas , or the shops at the back of La Boqueria, or any supermarket. Never met anyone else who likes it! I went to Besalu to the Ratafia Festival - tastings of the stuff all over the village - after a few glasses, they all blur together! I bought a bottle and dropped it on my doorstep, just wasn't to be!
